my sweet hubby liked them so much he built 4 more for me...now i have 8
kuddos to DH for making me these container gardens!
He's a keeper.
Those are fantastic, a raised bed.
Amazing
Virginia.. Well.. a great start for spring planting.. your warmed soil will have them jumping out.. real fast..
Lovely oak.. and moss.. you have..I was at a big nursery for their big spring show/sale.. out on Long Island... and they had moss for sale.. it looks like you might at their rate/size..have $10,000.00 worth of moss there Virginia.. and you throw it on the ground under your veggies.. Yes..I bet it is beautiful..
Hmmmm, just think, moss as a marketable crop! All we have to do is rake our Live Oaks and maybe we could fill up that big hole where our retirement plans used to be? LOL
Great idea using it for mulch VB and I am still green (appropriate today of course) with envy. Those boxes are wonderful.
here's a pic of the oak...when i first bought this place it was a tomato field and this big guy sat right in the middle of it...our house is 60' long so it looks like the spread on this fellow is approx. 180'...i need to measure the circumference of the trunk but it would take at least 3 people holding hands to go around it
you want some gordon??? be glad to send you a box full!!!
ardesia...retirement account??? a distant memory...sigh....hopefully the nail biting days are over...resignation has set in...
Virginia.. Oh. Thanks....I'd love some hanging moss.. I can't guaranee it will thrive here...like it does for you on your oak tree.. I must have pulled a dozen oak trees up from my planters already this spring.. and it's scarcely here.. Oak trees are are carried up [ 5 stories ] to me by the bushey tailed rats...[ squirrels ] and planted into my pots.. where they give a germination rate of about 110% .. had I known the oak tree moss was arriving... I might have kept some.. but it will have it's best try at life.. drapped from the underside of a large Japanese maple.. and wintered inside somewhere..
I'll d-mail you some particulars... and ask how to send shipping to you.. Thanks again
Hi, VB,
Great setup. One question. Did you start all your plants from seeds or are those purchased seedlings? When did you sow?
thanks gymgirl...all starts bought at big box stores or feed and seed...i've got a few seeds started a month ago. ..i wish i had the light system so many have with the heat mats underneath...seems to really help with the germination...
Virginia..
Thanks... the Big box of spanish moss arrived.. soft and greenish... it made the trip in great shape..
We'll be getting together a few Brugs for your pleasure in the next few days... looking for some big enough to make the trip... but small enough to fit in the box and not weigh to much with their roots/dirt... don't want to bare root them .. after them being established.. and in the start of their growth stages..
what a joy. oh.. question.. it freezes there sometime..right.. what happens to the moss then.. don't want to put it ot hereright away though.. perhaps a time in the greenhouse.. on the more shaded wall.. hanging under a few new shelves I now have running around the edges.. 41% humidity now.. at 84*F.. should be ok for them...
gordon...so glad the moss got to you in fine shape...we occasionally have a freeze here but i've never seen it have any effect on the moss...all i really know about the moss is that it likes humidity...since i sent as much as i did, if i were you i'd try it in several different spots and see where it likes it the most...it does well in hot and humid conditions...i've got it spreading to my crape myrtles now...it doesn't seem to grow in pine trees...i guess it's being spread by birds or the wind but it does spread once established...good luck!!! and don't forget the pics!!! virginia
Good Morning everyone

Be sure to watch for flowers on the moss Gordon, they are small but very pretty.
Varginia...
Yes.. I've noticed the moss in my travels southward...but it occoured to me I wasn't paying much attention to how it was growing.. as I'm putting it in different places... does it usually like underneath the trees.. or is it growing out on top .. in the more full sun... thanks..again.. it's into the greenhouse with them... over 50% humidity there right now
GE... what a nice mix... and a grand idea...
Ardesia.. well thanks for the flower watch... Idon't recall ever noticing blooms on moss... but my knowledge is from a few yards away...
ge...great video...had seen it before on you tube...
gordon...on the big oak it seems to grow on the bottom to mid bottom branches mostly in the shade but on the crape myrtles it is in sun...
ardesia...yes, i've seen mine in bloom as well...amazing isn't it!
virginia
it loves my emerging duranta.. kind of like an instant savana / bayou setting.. I love it
neat looking with the background colors
It's amazing, wherever you hang the moss it looks right at home. The Lowcountry touch in Flatbush; you gotta love it. :-)
GE..well thanks.. it allways does work out somehow or other.. the pink is 1 1/2 " thich.. and the 1/2 "stuff for covering the metal from cold and condesation came in blue..
Ardesia.. yes it starts occuiping where ever it is.. well.. Flatbush is about a 20 minute drive awayfrom the city.. this is the Carroll Gardens section of Brooklyn.. named for Carroll a Rev war hero.. [ some big battles for independance in NY happened here.]. and noted for the brownstone houses.. with gardens in the front and back ..
Funny though.. when I released it in the greenhouse.. the humidity went way down.. and the moss was sucking it up... now the humidity is up to 58%.. it will climb as I spray and water..
looking good gordon!!! glad you are happy with it and glad you've got a little southern touch there in yankeeland...hope it does well for you...are you now the only brooklyn resident with spanish moss hanging from your trees??? when you have a garden party hang that stuff everywhere and with the right mood lighting you're sure to have a winner!

Thanks Virginia. well your plants are in the hands of the piority mail folks.. as of today at 5 pm.. my guess is delivery to you there on Wednesday.. mostly it was the matter of what would be small enough to fit into the box.. and be strong enough for the ride..
You've a small plant a seedling of mine.. an Ollie X ? cross .. from '07 Ollie is a fairly large .. always flowering white. Brug.... I can't say what the cross was .. there's a few good suspects blooming near by back then.. .. then there's another well rooted Brug cutting.. it looks to be one of my saved and rooted out cuttingsfrom last year.. taken asa back up... of a better one.. just incase of some problem with the big one overwintered.... all the big things did just fine.. so I sent the back up to you. poor baby lost it's tag somewhere in the process of life.... the last brug is a small cutting... well a broken off bit of I believe Mountain Treasure.. which was in an isle. trying to get prefered treatment.. but as many of the special treatment plants go.. succeptable to other dangers.. in the brightest/warmest/ hotest places.. so it was hit and broken in it's lsle position...a top tip of it was broken.. above the " Y " and water rooted with some other plant. which rotted and got this one a bit mushy.. so I cleaned [ H2O2 ] and re cut it .. and it had the first of some tiny root hairs to start.. I've wrapped it in wet paper towels then plastic over... it had 4-5 strong small leaves on it.. it's taped in between the other two in the long triangular box.. plant it right up upon arrival.. there you have the story..you said you liked awaiting mystery.. there yours are.. with a few clues..
enclosed picture: here's the seedling / cuttings for the new year.. to go in the already maxed out space with everyone from last year..all of whom made it just fine and are just abit bigger then when they came in in the fall.. also .. just started a few dozen new seeds yesterday....just what's the matter with me... my name is Gordon.. and I have a problem..

Virginia...
well any pictures of the garden there.. I imagine the planters are filled.. .. loaded with flowers and veggies hanging down to the ground... that's another reason for raised beds.. as there's non trellised air space down to the ground...where they can grow...
so the spanish moss is doing great... we've had rain about every day . sometime two or three mes.. with sun inbetween... perfect moss weather .. and it is still green... and I imagine growing also.. here'sapicture of it in a Durantia.. tree.
Thanks agian... it does make a great mulch also... reall stays green on the ground also..
