Blue Sky Vine, Thunbergia Grandiflora

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Has any one tried to root this one and if so how did you do it and what success did you have?

I have rooted it in both soil and water. I use bottom heat, which works for me.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

I've rooted in just soil and kept misting it a coupel times of day. Yep agree with Lay it does liek the heat.

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

I have some white Thunbergia cuttings and Passiflora vitafolia cuttings rooting in water right now - on heat - doing well.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Kay you got them in glass on a heat mat at same time? Learnign another new way here. : )

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

No, they are in a tin vase, setting on a heat source.

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

I have a bubbler set up with an aquarium heater that keeps it about 78 degrees wonder if that would work?
I will try that and the soil with heat. See whitch one works the best since I have a lot of cuttings to take.
Thanks all for the info....

That should work!

I have this in my green house ,I ask the nursery man how to propagate it he said only by seeds. The plant kept growing it was running vines and every time I passed it the vine would hit me in the face ,so I wacked it off and stuck the vine in a pot of dirt ..in about two weeks it had rooted and my vine was growing like crazy...I have made many cuttings from this plant ..same way.

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks Gingerose, I took a bunch of cuttings yesterday and put them in the bubbler with my brug cuttings. I have a lot more to cut so I will try some in soil as well. I'll keep yall posted as to how they are doing...I have had this plant 2 or 3 years now and it has bloomed like crazy but I have yet to see a seed and belive me I have looked....

I have rooted the orange Thunbergia in sand.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

Dee, what do you have in the water? It looks like you just have a piece of the stems in there. BTW, are those brugs you have bubbling too?

Jeanette

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi Jnette, I put H2o2 in there to hopefully keep down bacteria, I think I add about a fouth of a cup. I add about that amount once a week. And yes those are brugs rooting in there as well also a Schefflera since a top got frost bite and I cut it back. I dont' know what it will do but I have rooted them in water before.
Almost all the brugs have rooted and I should be able to pot them up pretty soon. I have potted Rhopsody from a rooted peice I cut back again and set it back in the bubbler to see if it would produce more roots. Maybe I will trade the extras.......don't know yet I dont' want to count my chickens so to speak...

Hi Dee,
You actually had the blue sky Thunbergia root just from a stem? I did last summer but put one of the off shoots in soil. The ones that actually had little plants coming out of the stems. Unfortunately I am not sure if I got the blue or yellow. I had both in the same pot. I am hoping it is the blue.

If it turns out to be the yellow one maybe I could trade you for one in the spring. LOL, seems a long way off. We still have a couple feet of snow and ice on the ground.

Jeanette

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Jeanette, I have never heard of a yellow sky vine - do you have a picture? If there is indeed a yellow Thumbergia aka sky vine, I'd like to trade one of my blue or white cuttings for a cutting of your yellow one. Thanks!

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

No, sorry I mislead you. It is a yellow Thunbergia. It bloomed a lot more, and earlier than the blue Sky tho. However, tell me the difference between the Blue Sky and the regular Thuns.

Jeanette

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Sounds great Jnette, I like Kay have never seen a yellow Sky Vine but I would love to have one. I love most any vine and a trade would surley be considered. Are you talking about the "Black Eyed Susan" Thumbergia. That one comes in yellow, cream and white. I love all the Thumbergai..The Photo is of the Black Eyed Susan Thumbergia
I have to have at least 2 nodes on the sky vine to root in water. I get some that are shorter or younger and they root pretty good. Older wood seems to root in water but will root in soil easily. I have to cut this plant back almost to the ball to move it where it will spend the rest of its time so I am almost starting it over......I will have lots of cuttings...

I wil let you know how it does..............I will post a photo of the Thumbergia Battiscombi next....

Those are all very pretty. Well, since I posted a little while ago I discovered that all of my house plants in there have spider mites. I spotted it on the Thunburgia or Sky vine first. Part of it had died. I did have quite a few ornamental sweet potatoes in there that all died and did not know until a while ago that they are spider mite magnets. So the poster said.

I suppose that is where they came from. I just got a d-mail from Al Tapia telling me to use 50/50 rubbing alcohol and water. So, I am off to do some spraying. Wish me luck.

Jeanette

Jones Creek, TX(Zone 9a)

Jnette, you may be better off useing as soap such as safer the alcohol may be a bit harsh.........
Let us know how your plants do and what you did to them.........

Dee

Dee, I have never had any luck with any Safer products. I don't know why because I know some people really swear by them. Anyway, if I have spider mites, even if I kill the plants, I have got to get rid of them. It seems like every year I have a terrible fight with them. Other than last year. For some reason.

Normally the brugs are the ones that they attract. Unfortunately I have cedar trees all around me and I think those darned things live in them. Maybe I will send for some mantis cases this spring. I gave my brugs to my daughter to take to Seattle last fall so she could winter them over for me. All but 2. I had a gorgeous Maya but I might as well have had her take it. My house is just too dry for brugs in the winter so I had to put it in the basement.

I had my SO go down and cut me off a piece of it yesterday to stick it in a bubbler. Here the darned thing had new growth on it. It is dark down there. No light. It must really want to grow. Wish it could see all that snow out there it would go back to sleep.

I have all but given up on the brugs because we have such a short growing season here. They don't get ready to bloom until just before it freezes here. So, I only have 4 or 5. My new ones are Pink Smitty and Salmon Perfection I think it was. Got them on Marketplace from Gone2seed.

Hi Jennette, yes I know so people swear by Safer but I have heard it dosen't work for some all the time. So if you have something better by all means use it. I was just suggesting another product, I know I also use Malathion alot, and it is a good one to and not to to bad on the enviorment or me.......

Yes you are in a short short growing season I thank goodness for all our heat and almost a 12 month growing season. We have very few frost and seldom and bad or cold weather. Our worst weather is Hurrican season and seems for us in the lower southern gulf area that comes in September. So I guess we should feel blessed.
If I can send you something later let me know and I will try and get it together when I have something rooted....
This white varitey I looked up and I think it is called "Thumbergia Alba"......If anyone out there knows different please let us know what the correct name is......
Best to you this evening...

They are so nice. You have them outside don't you? What do you have them climbing on?

Very pretty. Thanks Dee.

I had the blue sky vine with the bright yellow throat. I so hope it comes back this year. I don't know why I left it planted in the ground. I also have an evergreen wisteria that is supposed to produce by seeds only that I'm gong to try to root for some friends who liked it. I have to go find out how to root lemon trees. My friend just gave me a bunch of branches that broke from hers when a shelf in the greenhouse fell on it.

Santa Cruz, CA(Zone 9b)

I tried starting the thun b. from seed and i think it developed into a tuber. is this possible? no flowers the first year and one of them died. now i have one i think left that died back but i could have accidentally swapped it with a dahlia tuber. i will try cuttings next time since this seems to be working for everybody here.

I have attached links to my bubbler system and one of my Thunbergia alba (aka white skyvine) cuttings - the cuttings were taken about a month ago. You can see the beginning of roots in the third picture.

Sydney, Australia(Zone 10b)

Very old thread, but I'm really frustrated that my ones never rooted in soil. I guess it was too damp and moist, with the plastic bag over them. Now I'm trying water propagation (thanks to this thread), and we'll see how they go.
