Longiflorum/Oriental vs. Longiflorum/Asiatic

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

which one do you prefer and why? I saw some in the B&D website that are calling my name. Somewhere there I also read a snippet about viroused Golden Stargazers, eeks! I really want that one but I may hold off on that one. If you have no problems w/ yours, I'd like to know.

I got some reg. Stargazer at WM. Is there a high risk that these might be virused? If you tell me yes, I will return them.

Since I am a fragrance freak, I'd have to go with the LO. I also like the flower forms better, more elegant. I also think that they do very well here with our winters. The fragrances vary so much too, Fruity pebbles to rose scents..I love them all.

Both varieties in my experience, multiply well, much more than I would expect of an oriental.

As for the 'Golden Stargazer', I have heard that from B&D, it just hasn't at all been my experience here so far. I have had 'Golden Stargazer' in the garden for 4 or 5, maybe even 6 years with no signs of any problem. It gets a nice thick stalk too. Must say I wouldn't dream of yanking it out. Don't be scared. If you like it, don't hold back for that reason.

As for Walmart, I have no experience. Hopefully someone else can help you there.

thank you, Mags. I'll keep your comments in mind. I really want that yellow stargarzer. Do you remember where you got yours?

What can you tell me about our Deliana? how's it doing in your garden?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

I have had 'Deliana' for two years. Like all of the other LOs I have, it comes back strong. It has a light scent and very nice color that holds up well here.

I actually bought my 'Golden Stargazer' from a greenhouse about 2 miles from here. Their source is Dutch, but anything I have ever gotten there has always done well. They also seem to get a lot of the newer varieties, like last year they carried the Tiny Series of lilies. It seems like they carry GS every year. If you want one and can't secure it, dmail me and we can work something out if they have it in spring (for you fall planting).

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

do you mean that if I buy now (any lily) for Apr delivery that is not a good time for me to plant? or were you just talking about GS?

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

No, no, I'm sorry, I meant if I got one for you at that garden center because you couldn't find one elsewhere, I would grow it for the summer then mail you the bulb in the fall after it was ready to be replanted in the ground.

Fall or spring is fine to plant lilies that you love . Sorry for the confusion ;)

danke, mags. you have dmail.

Hey Nery, how ya doin'?

While it kinda depends on what you're wanting from the lilies you choose, I'm like Mags, and prefer the fragrance and form of the LOs. The main limitation with them is color, but they're great if you can use pinks, crimsons, and white.

For me, LAs aren't much different from Asiatics, but often have larger blooms. They're hardy and multiply quickly, and I like the color range, but I'd sure like to see the fragrance gene come through in them. And I'd love to see the Easter Lily form in hot colors.

Makes me wonder if crosses between LOs and LAs will someday be on the market. Wouldn't that be cool!

Forgive me for invading your thread, but was going to post to ask about moving Asiatics this time of year. They are breaking ground, and I would like to devide, and re locate.Thank you.

mike, invade away. I can only tell you I prefer orientals over asiatics but Asiatics are supposed to do better in my area. As to dividing, I haven't had any long enough to require dividing but i'm sure somebody will come by soon w/ comments.

You can move them if you'd like, but be very careful as the sprouts are easily broken.

North Pole, AK(Zone 1)

I've found when I relocate Asiatics when they are just or not quite breaking ground, even though I take a huge mound of soil around them so I don't think they know they are being moved, they still pout and don't bloom that year. Then they come back bigger and badder than ever the next year....Others have posted that they bloom that same year, despite being moved....I've only ever actually divided them in the fall but have relocated them in the spring for various reasons.

You'll never know till you try...I'd go for it.

Thankfully, because they have all that stored energy in the bulb, you won't kill any, even if you divide them at this stage. But do heed Chocomoose's advice. I would probably expect some blooms, but they won't be as large as normal, and may be deformed. The stem and leaves will also be abnormal, smaller and tighter on the straight or not so straight stem. Next season, things will return to normal.

I can't stand to think of "setting " them back, so I will wait until fall.
I looked at B&D, and had to make a small order of Oriental.I think I will like the height better.I am also a sucker for the yellow.
