Favorite foliage fragrances... what an addiction!!!

TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS???....gulp!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Ouch! LOL

F4F ~ I am jealous of you running around doing the sniff test and actually finding these exotics. For us it is only in our imaginations and on others say so that we run amuck purchasing wildly.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Samantha - do you remember any of the vendors at the big ole sale down there carrying these types of plants?

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

No i didn't see any Chantell but then again I wasn't on a search for them. Next one is in spring so i'll look out for it this time.

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

Gheesh! I am thinking that maybe I am now GLAD to be poor and unemployed! Why does all the good smelly stuff have to be so darn expensive?

And someone, please enlighten me on "Brunfelsia americana" please, does everyone have this except me too? I had one friend say that her Yesterday, today and tomorrow (or whatever) was not at all fragrant, so I wrote them all off.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Think of the $$ you could make selling rooting cuttings of these, Vi!!!

Samantha - please make sure to tell your hubby this is ALL Kristi's fault...ROTFLMBO

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

shhhhh Chantell......my husband is none the wiser to all my plant addictions...he thinks ALL the plants I have are the same, I keep telling him I get them in trades....little does he know I trade them for money!

Gilroy (Sunset Z14), CA(Zone 9a)

viola, IMHO, "fragrant" is in the nose of the beholder. The brunfelsia a. (YT&T) I had was VERY fragrant....er...SMELLY! I was thrilled when it appeared the landscapers had killed it off or dug it up last summer. I'm hoping it doesn't reappear this year.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Kristi who? LOL

I have two different YTTs. One fragrant the other non. You said one was SMELLY? Did you not like it?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I just asked a seed-selling DGer who's recently branched out into plant offerings to look for these spice trees for us, and she said she'd see what she could find out.

Otherwise, if I strike out with my local nursery guy, I'll hope I'm in time to order seeds from Tradewinds. :-)

Gilroy (Sunset Z14), CA(Zone 9a)

I most definitely did not like it!! The flowers are so pretty---but I was glad when I smelled it the first time that I'd planted it AWAY from the house. But I don't like paperwhites either, so it's probably just me....

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I just found a nutmeg plant on ebay... was ready to pounce when they said the summer long blooms were reminiscent of (((sshudderr))) mothballs. I don't think so! Not the right one I guess.

Bucyrus, OH(Zone 6a)

I call my Cestrum Nocturnum "Stinky Pete." When it blooms my basement smells like something crawled downstairs and putrefied. :) At first I thought it was the cats. Then I found the blossoms. I am getting used to it though. :)

Oh, you guys are cracking me up. Yeah, I am teased to a degree you guys have no idea. I can't afford the plants either, and I work around them every day......or I get stultified by my boss for taking an interest. I thought I'd get whiplashed the day I bought the Tabernaemontana for my birthday.......the failing memory didn't help much, either. Yep, we all know what Jene's can get for a small plant that can be fed-exed (at least from what I've seen her quality is excellent.) So the plan where I work is, imagine how much you can get for one that's 15 feet tall? I haven't dared ask to buy one of those precious cloves......but I am thinking about it. I'll have to hatch some sort of plot.........

Viola - there are several fragrant Brunfelsia, and the best are neither pauciflora or grandiflora (the 2 YTT.) Podster- that is weird about the bloom flower. Was there a species name with the plant on Ebay? I'll have to look into that now. You never know. How many of us love olive oil? Apparently the pollen with the blooms is prolific and a terrible allergen. Yikes!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, Nutmeg bush plant Iboza.. http://cgi.ebay.com/Herb-NUTMEG-BUSH-PLANT-Iboza-SP_W0QQitemZ200235526786QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116 definitely not the same plant.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Nope. Nutmeg is Myristica fragrans. Whew!

I noticed the Cinnamomum z. have immature inflorescences.....you guys please remind me next week to see if they've opened. :-)

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Interesting selection of seeds here: http://www.tradewindsfruit.com/order.htm - correction - they DO have clove seeds...but ONE per pack...hmmm, that's a lot of pressure. Anyone good with seeds that wants to be the surrogate for me?

And if that's not enough to make you cry how about that they were at the local Lowes and Ace Hardware in HI???? http://www.hear.org/starr/plants/images/species/?q=syzygium+aromaticum

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

Chantell they have lots of cool seeds, I've ordered from them a couple of times.....I love how it's free shipping after $7.50....I hate paying shipping. I have the Clove seed planted right now sitting under my Aerogarden "modified" seed starter LOL. We'll see, it was fresh when it came so I planted it straight away. Can't hurt to try.

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

AHHHHHHHH that's not fair.....Hawaii has all the fun.....Roadtrip!!!!

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Roadtrip, share seeds.....how about splitting an air container? We could form a co-op!

Chantell, I'd be a seed surrogate for you.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

F4F - I may take you up on that (and get one for you too - for the trouble) if I don't get responses from a couple other contacts.
Now THAT would be a road trip eh?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Chantell, I've got a heat mat and some other tree seeds to try to get started this winter. But I've promised myself no more orders until i get set up downstairs -- especially not anything that has to be sown fresh, LOL. Hopefully in a day or two, I'll be ready to order some clove seeds -- Ceylon cinnamon, too, do you think?

They also have Miracle Fruit seeds, which might be fun to grow even if they're not fragrant.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

How lame am I pawning off babysitting on everyone? I just don't trust myself quite yet with anything that costs more then $2.00 per packet full.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Miracle Fruit is such an awesome plant. It is a truly amazing experiences. Good seed should give a high germination rate doing nothing special. I don't know how long it takes before they are big enough to produce fruit, however.

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

F4F - I have a couple of Miracle Fruit bushes here in a pot, the seeds are so easy to germinate, I usually just put them in a little baggie and within a week they sprout. Now after that they take a long time....I have a couple that I germinated and potted up during the summer and they still only have 4 leaves....I have heard it takes between 3-4 years from seed to fruit for those.
It is a fun berry isn't it....it's a frequent thing to have at our neighborhood parties here, I always bring the berries and sour fruit for everyone to try....My favorite so far is strawberries and pineapple with the berry.....the strawberries taste like they smell.

Hmmm back to the Clove....I don't have my hopes up too high with this seed thing....I'm hopeless at germinating things....well actually things germinate but then I forget about them and they die....I'll need an intervention from all of you if this little 1 seed does eventually pop it's little head out....otherwise I'm likely to have gotten bored of waiting and moved onto the next fragrant plant. I'm so impatient!

Forgot to mention that if any of you want any Miracle Berry seeds, Dmail me when it starts warming up, I have a few now but I"m not sure how viable they are as I've heard they loose viability quickly, but I know in summer if I pick them fresh, eat the berry and spit the seed out and plant it it is close to 100% germination.

OK so who has this plant and can comment on it's scent?
Cornutia Grandifolia "tropical lilac"
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/127509/

I miss not having lilac here in Florida.
There isn't much info in PF's but I was searching around on the internet and came across this description:

"The fragrant scent of the Tropical Lilac or Cornutia Grandifolia is unlike anything you have ever smelled before. It’s strong floral fragrance has graced the bodies of socialites for decades as its scent is used to produce some of the finest perfumes and toilet waters."

However on Tops website it says "...astonishing fragrant velvet leaves...Leaves have pleasant tobacco-like scent." hmmm I don't know if I want tobacco-like scent?

So does anyone have this or has had the chance to smell it?

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

I would ask Amygirl. Maybe they have it a Fairchild. Thanks for finding another interesting plant!

Lewisville, TX(Zone 7b)

we do love our scents around here too!! I grow cinnamon basil just for the foilage & scent alone..never using it in cooking & I let it grow whereever it resseds itself!! I am not so lucky with lavendar though..it may be me, or the area I live in.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Hello, Cindylove. Cinnamon basil is awesome. In fact, there are so many basils......my father once was up to 12 different basils. Speaking of herbs, was pennyroyal ever mentioned in this thread? I adore pennyroyal......have overlooked it with all this focus on tropicals.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Aha ~ I started a patch of pennyroyal last year. It is a low grower and I don't walk on it as it is just getting started so haven't sniffed it much. Fingers crossed that it will get established.

This will be my first year with cinnamon basil and looking forward to it!

South Venice, FL(Zone 9b)

cindylove, try adding some freshly chopped cinnamon basil leaves to chicken salad, along with some toasted pecans and red grapes (sliced in half), this makes the best chicken salad you've ever tasted! I try to make it a few hours ahead of time and let it chill so the flavors can marry. Yummy!

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

Looksy here....remember I bought that $3.00 Clove seed....I think it's starting to sprout, some green is pushing through....I'm so excited. It's under my "aerogarden" makeshift seed starting crazy idea. I'll post more pictures if it does pop out.

How exciting! Love your label. :-)

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

Woooo-whoooo...how long since you planted that baby!!

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

thanks f4f...LOL...ran out of plant label sticks....only had knives from New Years Party handy.

Chantell I think it was around 5-7 days I planted them. I was expecting it to take a couple of months but maybe because it was fresh it is going to sprout faster. We'll see. I'm certainly lacking in the seed bearing department...they usually only get to 2 leaves and then I forget about them...hopefully with them here in my kitchen under this Aerogarden light I'll be reminded of them enough to keep them alive.

Lewisville, TX(Zone 7b)

svplantingfool.....sounds good..thanks for making my mouth water! hahaha

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

astcgirl- that is the trick to most tropical seeds. Plant them immediately and the fresher the better. I'm not surprised they germinated that quickly. Were they thin and papery or just relatively small?

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

f4f from what I recall (should've taken a picture) it wasn't too small, it seemed pretty big for a seed and it had a fleshy coating, I popped it into the mix 2 days after receiving it. I also have a cinnamon seed germinating but that one takes a while to sprout so the paper says. The Strawberry Papaya ones I put in sprouted in less that 4 days. This is my first time germinating seeds like this so it's quite exciting.

Middle of, VA(Zone 7a)

alrighty...couldn't stand it any more...ordered some seeds....I feel SOOO much better now...
