Another Mantis??

Hallsville, MO(Zone 5b)

What specific type of Mantis is this? Also, what type of egg case do they make. This pic is of one that I found in the roof peak of my 12'X24' greenhouse. I found SEVERAL flat/oval eggs casing. Do they belong to this type of Mantis. I also found one that is shaped like a mini wasp nest on some tall grass.

Thanks for the help,
Brian

These might be grizzled mantids (Gonatista grisea) - see http://tinyurl.com/c4jnq4 for an example. This species is extremely variable in its color pattern. See http://tinyurl.com/c87ocp for some images of mantid oothcae; I suspect that the ‘mini wasp nest’ could be the ootheca of a Chinese mantid.

I the example of the the mantis. Mine did not have that camo, but can they change to match surrounding. I know these were a very dark brown. I did not know if the color was darker because of them mating

They cannot change their shape. They sometimes change their color when they molt. That is not a Grizzled Mantis. That is a Carolina Mantis. Grizzled Mantids are amazing!
