Wicking And Shelves

Frederick, MD(Zone 7a)

ibrabec, I'm glad you have decided to dip your toe back in the water. Before long, you'll be up to your ears like the rest of us.

That's exactly what I was afraid of! LOL.I hope I'm a little smarter this time and don't have to have every plant I see,but I kinda....sorta....well maybe...haven't really learned my lesson.

I think I can get about waist high without even buying more shelves.^_^. Better practice my swimming.

You have all been very helpful, but here I come with another question..LOL..All of the places I have looked so far do not have shelves longer than 36 inches. If I can't find any bigger,do you think if I strapped 2 racks together and centered my 48 inch shoplites, leaving a foot on each side, that the ends would have sufficient light for Gessies with lower light requirements? I hope I'm being clear.

Target had the 48'" shelves==about $69

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

I got mine at Costco for $65-ish.

Thank you,Thank You! I need to go to a few more stores.

I found some online at Costco, but didn't see them on Target's site.I think I will go to one of their stores and check them out.Costco just moved here and I'm not a member yet.

Lynn,
My stands hold four perma nest trays and then some... each shelf has two shop light... I love my shelves... I have a smaller one in the Livening room for when new ones come so I don't get bugs...Trust me I learned that the hard way...

Susan,
My biggest problem is due to balance issues, the shelves can't be 6 feet high.I have at least a 12 foot width that could be eventually be used and depth is not a problem. My smaller unit uses 24 and 18 inch lights and the 18 inch tubes are really pricey. (Heaven help me,I'm just going back to growing and already talking about 12 foot shelves..LOL)

Balance issues as far as cosmetics go? I threw decorating out the door the day I started growing inside on gro light stands. ^_^

Lakeview, OR(Zone 7b)

I bought another grow light yesterday for my empty shelf. Now I have to fill that shelf with plants; then another light, another shelf. Wonder how many shelves I could get on hubbys side of the room :-) I bought some cups with domes; I am ready for some growing. But it's only February and there's still snow on the ground. What's a person to do???? I want this episcia sooo bad. Get ready, Rob's!

LOL,Gail..What is more decorative than beautiful flowering plants? ^_^ No,I mean I am unable to stand on a two-stepper or even one of those little portable steps without falling.
Lynn

I could probably get my DH to help me.I have found shelves 54 inches high, but the widest they came in was 36 inches.

I think I bought these stools at Walmart........very sturdy and have to keep one in every room that has plant stands...........I am only 5' 2" and that may be stretching it as I grow older.
This one is made by Rubbermaid with a rubber top and even I don't fall. Look how wide the legs are and it is very lightweight.

My balance isn't good but i can do anything on this thing.

Thanks Gail. ^_^. It looks great!
My problem, without going into a long boring story,is that I fall to one side very suddenly, sometimes. The last thing I would want to do is fall into my precious plants and crunch them.I would rather crunch myself a little....LOL.
We all have our little problems as we 'gracefully' grow older.
If anyone does know of shelves not more than 60 or so inches tall, but at least 48 inches long, please let me know.

The ones that I got at Costco can be split in half - 3 shelves on one half, 2 shelves w/legs on another.

Jasper, AR(Zone 7a)

If you check out the shelves-- i think you'll find that the second shelf isn't over 60" high-- you can get Dh to hang the light from the top shelf--it is hard to utilize that top most shelf for plants anyway since you would have to hang the lights from the ceiling. I don't use it 'cos I am short and round with a low center of gravity (think humpty dumpty;) andI also like to see my plants---- so i store light things up there-- like plastic trays etc.

Thanks Nichole and Gran.
Lol...LOL....Tommie ^_^. You are too funny! Think of me as a 5 foot 5 Humpty!
