can someone please tell me how to get the seeds from impatiens? and the new gunea impatiens? thanks alot
help w/collecting seeds
Icebud, the regular impatiens form little pods that burst open. Collect them when they look like they are ready to split but have something under in case they do.
I have one new guinea impatien this year and it has been outstanding. It has not wilted once. I have not seen anything that resembles seeds on it though. Brenda
Don't wait for the pods to look ready. They'll split all on their own when they're still very green. When you see a seedpod that has swollen, try stroking it gently with a bowl or something under it. If it isn't ready, it'll probably split during the night when you're not looking, LOL. You could try netting them or leaving a little cream cheese bowl or something similar under any promising-looking pods. I find them pretty hard to catch, personally, but I haven't made any concerted effort.
the first seed pod I grabbed to harvest off my impatiens, felt like a bug squirming in my hand & of course I threw it! (and dropped the bag, also). It should "open" when you grab it off the plant.
Icebud,
Icollect my impatients seeds every year. When the seed pods are swollen I carefully pick them by the stem and put them in an envelope. They will pop open on their own, lots of times when I'm putting them in the envelpe LOL. Let them dry in there them pick out the hulls. I have had a much better germination rate with my seeds over store bought. Good luck. When you are ready to plant them just surface sow and mist regularily.

Howdy! I am interested in "harvesting" the seeds from the double impatiens (Impatiens Walleriana to be exact!). What do the seed pods look like? I sure can't find them.....I do know what the regular impatien pods look like. Are they like them????? Am I just "missing" them? Many thanks in advance!
