Your pink flowers are dianthus .

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

here is another small bed by the driveway - white birch i dug up wild and transplanted 10 years ago - with hosta that were here when we bought the home that i split up - backed up by spirea that is invasive - i also have phlox along the wall that suffers due to lack of sun.
will move out phlox and strongly thinking about a couple shade jm's going in here
oh and there are bleeding heats by the base of the birch in spring.
i picked up a dozen baby golden something spirea in trade for jm seeds here at dg - when those grow up a bit these spirea with find their way to the fire pit.

here is a shade bed - lots of different hosta - in back is a Frazier fir and a weeping hemlock that needs to be moved as it is the same size as planted years ago - the bed itself is under a maple - silver birch as well - white and pink bleeding hearts - phlox on the wall - and the blue flowering plant i can't remember the name of - i've added a couple dozen shade plants to this using the famous victor shoe horn - looking forward to next year.

this bed was the scene of a lot of fallen tree damage from the ice storm in dec. it is covered in pine needles a few inches thick.

it is also a favor place for chippies and voles to live and EAT! so i have to spray it with some vole-away stuff every few weeks - it seems to work good.

Dusty miller, Marigolds, astibles and some asiatic lillies. I did plant some EE's but they were not the Colocasia.

I envy all the space and rocks and trees and shrubs everyone has in their beautiful gardens.

Thanks ngam for the information about the umbrella trellis. I'm very tempted to buy a few of them but they don't seem to have the same model you bought. The one they have looks like it has a full circular top that would take up more of my very limited space.

The fall is one of my favorite times in the garden. The unexpected touch of light purple of fall crocus near the red leaves of Penstemon 'Husker Red' in the photo just tickled me visually. This is the street side garden using the sidewalk strip since I have such a small space I expand the garden where I can.

another new bed built last year - this one will see some changes - i plan to install a lattice fence in front of the foundation and around the ac units and build a brick patio in front of the bed.- will have to move some bushes around and plant some in front of the patio (another new bed) with these changes.

Wow Wow - ooh

wha, how do you decide what to plant? I mean you obviously have a lot of beds that require planning.
We all love everything we see, of course, but how does everyone decide what goes together?
Do you buy what you like and then make an arrangement of the plants purchased? Or do you plan out what types and go looking from there?
Just trying to pick everyone's brain. Thanks.

North Augusta, ON

I buy what I like then get home and wonder where on earth I'm gonna put it! Usually involves a lot of wandering around aimlessly with the new plant in hand and scratching my head...

Central, ME(Zone 5a)

That's exactly what I do. I think I need to encourage more constructive behavior. LOL

North Augusta, ON

nah...for me, planning takes all the fun out of it!!

There is 3 types of what you see. I see Bills beds as Classic.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Here's front island beds in the beginning. Oringinally intended for roses, but I stuffed a bunch of other stuff in there too.

Bill that is just lovely. Every thing is so neat and trim. Just really nice. Love your paths and I saw your cute round birdhouses, very talented indeed. That's what I need, bigger muscles, more time and energy and learn to work with wood and stone. Ya right. Thanks for letting us peek at your garden beds, your hard work is certainly very noticeable.
I usually start with a plan. You know the usual .Tall plants in back, med and then short in front, various bloom times, all sunny stuff together with like water needs, complimentary colors and I always make sure to leave the correct space for when they all grow up. Then some where along the line I see a plant I must have and squeeze it in, it's just one. Then another and another and so much for the great plan. Then it gets too full and jumbled looking so I make a new bed and rearrange everything. Looks good until I see a plant I must have then....

Edit to say sorry didn't mean to step on your post Venu. I like those raised beds and the pretty rock edging.

venu- That's a beautiful bed. It really filled out nicely. How long did it take from the first photo to the second?

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

No problem Ngam, your second paragraph sounds soooo familiar.
The beginnings of a shade garden.

Nice venu. Look at all that lovely green. Oh how I miss green. Your beds have filled in very nicely and I would not mind a sit down on your bench with a tall drink on an early summer day. The whole thing looks very peaceful. Fence is nice as well as a backdrop, pretty.
