What is this?

Wilson, NY

I was loading wood into the stove then I saw something on a piece of wood. Could someone identify it?

this isn't the place to ask for identifications. We have an Insect and Spider identification forum here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/bugid/all/
and if you post your query there you may well get a helpful response.

Having said that, I think I know what your strange object is.

I think it is the egg-case (or ootheca) of a Praying Mantis. There is an ootheca very like yours in this article on Praying Mantis: http://www.ca.uky.edu/entomology/entfacts/ef418.asp

As I browse through the "Bug Files" I see that many entries are related to bugs. kennedyh seems to keep refering those entries to other links.
Perhaps it would be less confusing if the name of the forum is changed to something other than "Bug Files". I say that only because if I was new to or unfamiliar with the website then I would surmise that the "Bug Files" forum would be for "Bugs". Just my thoughts.

I would agree. I came here to post a question and this was the first thread I came across so was directed to the link but the name does mislead. I share your thoughts.

That looks like a Stagmomantis sp. ootheca. The European Mantis oothecae I have seen are the same shape as that ootheca.
