I honestly think they're around $4 now
can bring rice hulls to the Feb Frederick SWAP
Just called work--The price is $4. 28.
I might have an empty bag- out of curiosity I'll fill it with rice hulls and see how it compares.
(Yes honey, I really was TOO BUSY with VERY IMPORTANT THINGS to clean house again today)
Aha....good thinking there, Sally - and I can ALWAYS justify NOT cleaning...just ask Becky!!
Gita - thank you...you'd think I'd remember since it under 2 weeks ago that I bought a bag...but well the brain goes MIA. BTW have you heard anything through the grapevine at work about Myer Lemons coming in???
Chantelle,
You were close on the price! Just 28 cents off....:o)
NOTHING is coming in yet, (Thank God!)--just Valentines Day plants--SO pretty!
If I can catch one of the Bell Nursery people (they all were purple shirts) I will ask. Not sure we ever really had the Myer Lemons in???? I remember we used to get in the Calamondin Orange plants....
You know--I have been out of the garden Dept. now for 5 years. Still take a walk through it after I eat my lunch.....Love it so...but feel rather disconnected from it.
Ahh Gita - if you're uncomfortable asking - it's no biggie. I just keep hearing from DGers north and south that their HD/Lowes get in the Meyer Lemons. Sadly I'm always missing when the Bell Nursery folks are there since I go by at night.
My boyfriend Rick (Organic farmer - http://www.summercreekfarm.com/index.html) makes his own potting soil and uses rice hulls and coir so if anyone wants some let me know and I can bring some. The coir bricks are $10 and when hydrated make about 15 gallons - it is not shredded. The rice hulls seem to be about the same price as Sally so if she runs out I can bring those. He sells them by the gallon bag, which is a little over a pound and they are $1.25. He also make up potting soil. Potting soil - coir, vermiculite, rice hulls and McGeary's Organic Fertilizer (5-3-4) $12 for 2 cubic feet (15 gallons) or $5 for 5 gallon. All these items will be sold through the Common Market later in the season (for more $$ of course).
I am not here to sell stuff - just thought I would throw it out there since I finally figured out my schedule and can come this year! He is a local organic vegetable/grain farmer who is Certified Organic and has been farming in Thurmont since 1992. I am trying to get him to come but I think the thought of a room full of DG women is a little intimidating- LOL.
Looking forward to meeting everyone!
-Kim
Kim,
I wish I could remember what I'd read last year - but I gathered not all coir is created equal - some with a fairly high salt content. I'm sure he's already checked this but would you double check for me please? Let me know and then I'll send you off a dmail...
BTW - us - "intimidating" - perish the thought!!! Bet the other guys would enjoy the company!!
Thanks much!!
Kim, I'm interested in the coir bricks, too.
You are right Chantell about the salt. Nope, no salt problem and it is OMRI certified (Organic Materials Review Institute). Jill asked me the same thing, no worries. He uses it in all the potting mix to start seeds at the farm - he has babies already for the season.
I will bring a bunch on Sat. and ya'll can fight amongst yourselves. Can you see a pillow fight with rice hulls inside? Now that would be a mess to clean up!
Absolutely NO wasting of rice hulls...BYOFP instead (bring your own feather pillow) LOL - Kim - I'll dmail you a bit later this AM
Yes, I'm hijacking (sorry Sally) - duplicate post:
ALL PLEASE SEE FOLLOWING THREAD ASAP - and let me know if we have enough interested to purchase the case of 12 http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/951984/
