What's your favorite squash to grow/eat

I'll get it posted as soon as I get my hub's back on his feet

Starlight,

the Zephyr summer squash taste is the same as straight neck and crookneck, only better.

My husband's "squash" soup recipe:

Kabocha squash/ peeled and cubed. (Any sweet orange winter squash will work for this as long as it is not TOO sweet) Kabocha is actually called a pumpkin in Japan, I believe.
Cooked chicken breast (baked or sauted) and cubed (You can use the canned chicken breast as well)
Fresh Garlic cloves (he uses about 2 of them in a med pot, adjust to taste) thinly sliced
Olive oil to saute garlic (a dribble or two)
Water
Salt

Heat oil in pot and toss in sliced garlic, saute until clearish
Toss in cubed squash, add water until squash is covered. Simmer covered until tender.
Salt to taste.
Toss in cooked chicken breast, simmer for a few minutes until nice and hot. If using canned chicken breast you might not want to use so much salt, the canned tends to be salty due to the broth.

Serve it up!

We don't measure anything around here, thus no two meals of the same food ever taste the same. :)

Wow! that sounds awesome. And nutritious. I have some butternut and buttercup, will that work? If so, I may make this soon

It is really good! I love it. If the squash has a sweet taste it should be fine.

I've not tried it with anything else than Kabocha, but I don't see why not.

Even if it's not as sweet, it should be fine, too, I would think.

Favorite squash to grow is actually a zuchetta, Tromba D'albegna. Has seeds only in the bulbous end, thick neck. You could eat it small like a zuchinni, or let it mature like a winter squash and flavor is excellent. They'll keep outside for what seems like a year.

Apropos of not much--when does one plant winter squash?

Depends on your zone - I plant outside in May.

Had Floridor--a round yellow summer squash-- for two years now and everyone likes it. Nice on the grill sliced.

Now that's neat, a round yellow squash like the 8 ball zuchinni? I may have to check into that one

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

Luziannagourmet, where do you get your Tromba D'albegna seeds at. I had to look that one up,

Kathy_Ann....yes...Floridor is, except for the color, a lot like 8-ball. Grew "geode" last summer too...a light green round summer squash. The problem with it is the plants are huge.

Photo below is of Geode, 8-ball and Floridor in an Earthbox. Geode has the variegated leaves. It dominated the box. Not any more productive nor better tasting so I don't think I'll grow it this year.

Very nice.

I just posted a have and want list on the seed trading forum if anybody wants to trade veggie seeds. I've spent way too much on seed this year, I need to try to trade for a few and save some money.

Several places have them, almost always as "trombonico" - but I grew trombonico from another company & they were exactly the same, just a little smaller & lighter interior. BUT, I've seen pics on some of the sites where trombonico looked the same size as the Tromba D'Albegna I have.
The better ones I got were from Reimer seeds, who are ridiculouly expensive. If you browse some of the companies that have rarer heirloom stuff you will definitely see it as well. I know I got a big pack this year (possibly from Baker Creek, would have to look - I know I got a bunch of squash from them), but this would be the 3rd different company I try this variety with. The smaller variety was still excellent, but I found the larger was sweeter & lasted longer (when grown to maturity, the longest storing vegetable I have out of hundreds of varieties of dozens of vegetables). They are also less attacked by bugs than regular zuchinni.
