To Chase Away The Winter Blues...4

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Ouch wha. Hope it doesn't happen. Sorry to hear about your DD Pixie. I sure hope they do paycuts here rather than layoffs. Although I really hope this would all just go away.

I thought all places hit your card when you ordered, at least that has been my experience so far. It would be nice if they waited.

Good luck with the green house, Mona.

Sherrie, you crack me up. Need the chuckles.

Remember poppies? I wonder how they're doin under all the snow.

Oh pretty. I have never grown poppies. What kind are those? I have a plant of 'Laurens Grape', an opium poppy, on the order I'm sending to select seed. Won't it be nice to see colors like that again.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I'm somniferum fan and keep adding new ones all the time. I mix them together and let them do their thing. My buddy Joe the Poppy King says I'm getting new ones all the time that he hasn't seen. This one was interesting this year

Those are beautiful D-nut! I too love Poppies, plan on growing some from seeds this spring.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

They don't like to be transplanted so be sure to direct sow pixie.

I like those bright reds too. I will definitely have to get at least one this year. It is probably a good thing that the weather is staying cold. I sure could use a little thaw, but maybe in Feb. we will get a tease for a few days. That will just make it worse and ramp up the spring fever but I miss my garden a bit more every day it seems now. Getting closer though, so soon the colors will return and the roses and the bugs and all those darn weeds. Gee wiz I can't wait. Here is a pic of 'James Galway' rose. He will finally get over the umbrella trellis this year I hope.

I just love the brite colors or poppies

Scicc - please elaborate on your "portable greenhouse": is this ready-made, a kit, or something you cooked up? I am all ears...
Poppies: I have successfully transplanted them when quite young. This was necessary because when I broadcast the seed, the birds would flock in to eat it. I finally broke down & fashioned a little "cage" of metal mesh to keep the birds out of the seed, but this won't work for broadcasting.
I like the way the buds look like little purses, and the pods have great ornamental value, too. They are little landing pads for some of the bird visitors we get.

That's good to know Katye.

Hi Dahlianut - DH grew up on 15th Street in South East Calgary.. . . near the brewery.

When he was a kid, he would fall asleep while listening to the lions roar at the Calgary Zoo. ^_^

Thanks scicci.

The first time I've ever seen a moose was at the Calgary zoo! I've seen them a few times in New England since.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Great photos, everyone! Makes me want spring in a bad way, not that I didn't already. Those peonies look luscious, and I love the picture of the flowering plum in the previous thread.

I took that quiz. Here's the answer I got: "It sounds like you have the perfect environment for creating the lush, tropical look with bold plants. So look for colorful varieties such as Croton, ti plant (Cordyline), and Rex begonias to add interest to your surroundings." LOL!
I actually do have a couple of Rex begonias. There were a couple of questions where I would have picked both of 2 answers if I could have, but there wasn't an option. I like a wide variety of houseplants, and my lighting environment is both bright in some spots and darker in others.

I would love to have a Sansevieria or Mother-In-Law's Tongue. I think it's really cool. I would put that in that living room.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

No you do not want a Sansevieria. They are a pain!!!!! If they are happy they grow and grow and grow until they break the pot. And there flower stink. With reminds me I need to take the axe and chop DM's plant down to size again.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I forget to add that if you want some d-mail me and I will send you some. I have the variegated form. 'They are tought. Even the freeze down here did not hurt it

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Too late, Wren, I already bought one. That had some really nice looking ones at Walmart, and I couldn't resist. He heee!!!!! And I put it in my living room, too!!!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Just do not water or feed to much and maybe it will not try to take over. LOL

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Okay, I won't. LOL! I know they can take a lot of abuse.
