Will Be Setting Up My EBs Soon As Weather Allows? PART 2
Thanks gymgirl. I was just about to ask how you do that.
It was getting to long.
Annie
Does anyone have an almanac handy? Like to have an idea what the spring and summer hold...
Here you go Araness ☺ The old farmer's almanac online
http://www.almanac.com/
Looks like clean up time and maybe some fried green maters. (smile)
Jerry
ps...be sure to wear your mask. (wink)
This is the other end with my Sprite cherry tomatos. Looks like I'll be cleaning them out also. The tomatos by the fence which are in the other picture were protecte from the cold NE windsv (Chapmans) and seem to be fine so at least I'll have tomatos till March when I usually convert to other melons and veggies. Even the Boca Bobs watering system couldn't prevent the damage.
Boy TPlant, you really did get a killing frost. Thank goodness I didn't. I have so much growing right now. I have 50 seedling tomato plants (Big Beef and Heatwave 11) ready for planting if you want some. I could bring them to work and you meet me and get them ( plus a cup of coffee). The offer will be good for about a week because the plants are ready.
Bob
Thanks Bob but I'm not to fond of Heat Wave and will still have enough to carry me over. My tomatos were a huge success and were given out to construction crews, doctors(and I had enough of them) teachers at the school, crossing guards, neighbors etc. I have been more than pleased with TGS's Chapmans. They are huge and tasty. You must try them next season.
I will. I'm going to go the heirloom route for now on. I just received today 25 seed packs from Tomato Growers. All heirloom tomatoes.
bob
Bob if you found anything you wanted but didn't order just post, as most of us always have a few seeds extra..*LOL* so far my order is up to 86.00. That's what happens when you don't order for a year...
Tplant how are you feeling? I'm sorry Jack Frost took a nip out of your plants, it's been a very strange winter hasn't it?
Hi araness -- Feeling very well but tire easily. Something I'll have to learn to live with by not overdoing it with my work. Must be very aware of the construction dust because unknown to me at that time was a main cause of my bronchial attack. The dust here is so very, very fine. I always thought it was just an allergy? They will soon be paving the parking lot and remaining areas. The doctor says wearing a mask may help to alliviate an attack but I don't feel comfortable with one as dust can slip in from the sides and wait for the weekends to work outdoors when no one is around otherwise the dust, ACCORDING TO WIND DIRECTION, can bring on another attack. One thing I noticed by working with the coir is no dust and that is another reason for me to use it as I now must be very careful and besides it is an excellent product. I would recommend this to anyone with COPD breathing problems as one can cough themselves to death!
TPlant
See if you can find the surgical mask. They work much better for me.
Ask your Dr. They have them at my cancer Dr's waiting room for patients, in a box by coffee pot.
To your good health.
terry
Thanks tubbytee! I will check into it with my doctor but just got good news that they are going to start paving the entire area next week so maybe I'll not need it. I can finally start having some fun! Which reminds me I need some more coir from BocaBob as I'll be dumping all my old mix from my EBs and containers

Bob: Is that cabbage I see a pic of there? Ummm, that would go good with some brats wouldn't it, like in sauerkraut? or even coleslaw, I love cabbage and yours looks terrific.
joy112854
Bob: Yes it is, it's a bit late for me to be planting cabbage and Mike has all mine. He said they didn't do very well; but I think he wanted the space for his tomatoes, you know how guys can be they like the tomatoes best. No one has answered my question on the bio sponges yet; I have 40 of them, how much water do I use to soak them in? I just used Gardener Supply's Self watering seed starter kits to plant my cukes and eggplants in.
joy112854
When I used my Bio Domes last year I just let the sponges soak up as much water as they would. Any excess ran off them. I put mine in the plugged up sink and just filled it with water. They will only absorb so much.
bob
Bob: Thanks can I plant things in them without a dome cover, I'll have to use some other tray as all they sent was the white cell thing and the bio sponges so far. Did you see my thread on "what is it" I have this stuff in my yard and can't identify it and it has me a bit worried.
joy112854
I would say if you are not using the dome then cover it with plastic wrap. If the sponge dries out near the top, that little seed will not be happy at all.
Bob: I used both Gardener's Supplies' APS self watering seed starter kits last night to plant my cukes and eggplants in. Park's says theirs will be here next week, so, I'm trying to hold off, All I have left are the transplant self watering pots called plant packs; but, I was going to use those for transplant pots. I guess I can give it one more week. I tried to enlarge that pic over on the other thread so everyone could see that little indentation in the center of that thing I posted a picture of but can't seem to get it any larger. I posted it really large over at the earthbox site. And the comments there are starting to scare me.
joy112854
Going to use some of these for fried green tomatos. The picture does not do them justice as they are really huge. Delicious and Church are the varieties and I kid you not that I have them almost twice as big outside which My DIL picked because of our frost warning but I don't believe it will freeze here this time besides I have at least twenty-five pounds inside that my son is going to make sauce.
This changeing of weather gave me a little bronchial attack today so I'm taking it easy. WARM AND BEAUTIFUL WEATHER TO COLD AND CRISP IS JUST TO MUCH FOR MY BRONCHITIS JUST NOW! WILL TRY FOR PICTURES TOMORROW OF MY HUGE BATCH OF TOMATOS KEEPING IN MIND THAT I HAVE BEEN GIVING AWAY HUGE BATCHES AWAY TO TEACHERS, DOCTORS AND CONSTRUCTION CREWS AND I ONLY HAD 28 PLANTS THIS SEASON , FOUR OF WHICH WERE OSU. WHAT A FANTASTIC SEASON!
Bob: I just got all your supplies and then right after that the fed ex truck pulls in, with 4 one year old artichoke plants from California, I freaked out, we are supposed to get down to 17 degrees tonight, it's freezing now brrrr. It's supposed to stay that way for 3 - 4 days too. Not only that, my pump house light went out and it's broken, getting it fixed tomorrow for sure, in the mean time, gotta trickle water in the bathroom sink. I was afraid of this. It's been warm here and it usually gets chilly here around November, it didn't and it just started getting cold this past week, I hope that doesn't mean we are in for an extended chilly time that will postpone our planting schedule, if so, I am really messed up.
Everyone: I received today in the mail in excellent condition, another of Bob's seed starter kits, with 2 refill pots kits as I've use all mine already, and 10 coconut coirs and the starter garden, like Christmas again. I loved opening up those boxes.
All my maters, peppers and cukes are under the lights now and doing beautiful, I have one lavender eggplant rearing it's head out of 6. I got two workers to split up the chore of making my HEBs and now have 3 done already and 12 more this week coming in, man, I hope this freeze passes quickly to not return till next winter, if not up with the greenhouse.
joy112854
Just about over for me as the new driveway goes in next week. Today's pick plus a batch I just gave to the construction crew. They will have to move my EBs so I may as well clean up when they start besides I have more tomatos right now then I can eat so my Dil is going to make a large pot of sauce. I will have more before they start and they will be fried green tomatos.
My pepper seeds have been planted in BocaBobs seedling starter kit so I won't be out of action for long. I'll be dumping all my mix and replace it with Bobs coir. My egplants are doing fantastic in it and they are not supposed to be at this time of year as it is to cold and they are a warm weather plant? Go figure! Thank goodness the weather seems to be getting back to normal. The weather forecast for today is 70's and heavy rain tomorrow. We can use it...
Tplant, What var are the maters in the left dish in the photo?
Jerry
Mama Leone and Roma. They make a delicious sauce.
Tplant how do you fix your fried green tomatoes We like them also..Just in case you might have a different recipe Thanks
Tubby
My mom fried them two different ways, dipped in buttermilk batter and fried or dipped in dry corn meal and fried. Of course mom and dad used tons of salt and ground black pepper on everything.

I went to Lowes yesterday to buy a few odds and ends and they are now selling a new grey 5 gallon plastic bucket for $2.79. That is really cheap for a new 5 gallon bucket. It said new lower price (not a sale). Growing in buckets just got cheaper (but not as cheap as 5 gallon grow bags) (unless you get your buckets free)
BocaBob
texasrockgarden I like pepper a lot and salt a little Buttermilk batter sounds good Thanks
Tubby
My mom used to make these homemade buttermilk drop biscuits and homemade tomato gravy, hmmm good, especially with pork chops and eggs in the morning. Used to tear up the biscuits and cover with that tomato gravy and then pour the gravy over the chop too.
joy
oh my Lord, makes me want to slap my pappy! Tomato gravy, the BEST! And fried green maters....I like mine best the simple way, just salt, pepper and dredge in corn meal. This year I will be pre-battering alot and freezing them individually on a cookie sheet, then placing in freezer bags ☺
Karen: You go girl. My daughter likes that atoufee sauce (sp) that they put on fried green tomatoes. I had the recipe once from someone from Louisiana, it has crawfish in it. But I do love homemade tomato gravy on everything, mom knew it was my favorite and her homemade bread and buttermilk drop biscuits were delicious.
To show ya'll how much I love yuns here is mom's recipe for tomato gravy
Tomato Gravy:
2 T flour
1 can of tomatoes
salt and pepper
bacon grease
1/2 can of water
Heat enough bacon grease in a skillet to brown flour until golden brown. Put tomatoes in a bowl, mash them. Add tomatoes and water to browned flour, add salt and pepper to taste. Serve over home made buttermilk drop biscuits or meats. Serves 4-6
For those who have never tried tomato gravy you should, you should, don't have any idea what you are missing, tastes nothing like tomatoes.
joy
Oh Joy, thanks for sharing her recipe! That's about the same as we always made it. Gravy ain't gravy without the bacon grease I tell you!
Karen: My mom use to make homemade cracklin bread too; never cared much for cracklin bread but loved her homemade bread it would be so warm fresh out the oven. She used to make pumpkin pies from real pumpkins too, used to watch her sieve out all the seeds and all. Amazing now that I think about it, she taught me to crochet, quilt, knit and much more than I could have ever learned in any college. LOL
joy
TPlant: I'm sorry you are having a hard time there. The weather up here has been so rainy lately and I think is warming up a bit; but, I don't trust it yet. I think we will still get a few cold snaps and don't plan on planting out til the beginning of March to be on the safe side. I suspect my cukes should be going out soon; but, don't want to lose them either.
