Rosemary seedstarting

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Any tips? I thought I would start indoors under lights and move into the greenhouse March 1. Is it too early to start? Should I put bottom heat for germination? My lights/shelfs are in my basement, which stays ambient temp under 20 C or 68 F Thanks

Hi JB - we met on chat last night (I'm the one with the slow response time :)). Just saw your post. I start rosemary indoors about 68C in a South facing window with no bottom heat. I just started some and oregano and lemon balm and basil and they are all sprouting. Bottom heat will probably help, but I wouldn't worry about it. Mine come up fine without it.

Thanks aardvark. I think I will start them this weekend...might get rid of the winterblues.

A good choice for winter- rosemary grows slowly enough that you won't have problems with it taking over before spring. I've been growing some since Dec., but am getting a terrible germination rate. Old seed.

Update on the Rosemary. Got 19 little seedlings so far & they seem to be still popping up. The package was open and from 2006/7. I think most germinated. Temps btwn 60ºF & 70ºF. Under lights. Kept on the dry side. 1/2 starter mix & 1/2 cactus mix
