Has the seeding of 2009 started?

I have a little space left in my indoorgrow op for a few more special things to seed this weekend and then I'll have to wait til I fire up the greenhouse.

YEAH, the rosemary is starting to germinate....1st little one emerged this morning.
last year I had no success with germinating impatiens. Tried a few different packages, from different places. I seeded 2 different ones last weekend. Have bottom heat mat and under lights for 16 hours. Was it a bad year (2008) for impatiens or is there some do's & don'ts that caused no germination? I followed the package instructions.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I got one of those impatiens "egg plants" for Christmas, and it came up a few days ago and seems to be doing well. I just stuck it under my grow light, kept it moist, and covered with saran wrap to keep the moisture and heat in. It did take awhile to germinate though.

Moon carrot, very interesting!

Thanks Ann

Hmmm I still haven't started anything yet but I sure am itching to. I am so envious of those who have started already!!!

This thread is getting me in the mood.. My William Dam seeds are here and some need to get planted. Wow Les you have been productive! Ann, are you really potting up cannas tubers already? Joanne congrats on the rosemary,it has never germinated for me and as usual what I brought in under lights is looking pretty iffy this time of year. With the morning glories and starting them so early, is it just to enjoy early bloom in the house Jo?

Still waiting for my Dam order. I sowed Stocks- Ten Weeks Dwarf. Very fast to germinate - within 48 hours. On the other hand I'm impatient with the impatiens. Only 5 germinated. I think I will remove the bttm heat, it may be too warm, since the ones that germinated are in the cells at the very edge of the tray. Hope the rest will still germinate.

(Zone 4a)

Well I was lucky enough to get all my seeds several weeks ago.....I am going to start indoor sowing in the next few weeks I think....well nearing the end of Feb anyhow....I can't wait......I am not sowing too many but these are what I will be sowing a lot of.....

silver falls
bacopa
snapdragons

Joanna - is that foil on the sides of your shelves? I just put a flat in my furnace room of seeds I just planted and just told my husband I think it should be a little warmer in there. Does this hold in the heat or something?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

That is a first aid emergency blanket (84" x 56"). It reflects the light, but will also hold in the heat from the lights. They are about $3 and come in a tiny little box. It is very thin and extremely easy to wrap around an entire shelve unit. Better than foil. Also is resistant to tearing.

Great setup joanna.....I need something like that with shelves....but of course that would mean more grow lights....LOL..... Looks good!

I seeded yesterday: datura belle blanche, hollyhock antwerp mixed (has anybody tried this supposedly rust resistant variety?) snapdragon bronze dragon (purple foliage),Begonia nightlife mix (dark leaf), geranium bullseye mix (an improved chocolate foliage variety), and Nicotiana only the lonely (really tall fragrant variety).

Where is the best place to find those emergency blankets Joanne?

I think I got them at Wholesale Sports. Canadian Tire would probably have them.

I just got 8 different kinds of herbs in the mail today :) Will be planting today or tomorrow =D

Update on the Rosemary. Got 19 little seedlings so far & they seem to be still popping up. The package was open and from 2006/7. I think most germinated. Temps btwn 60ºF or 17ºC & 70ºF or 21ºC. Under lights. Kept on the dry side. 1/2 starter mix & 1/2 cactus mix

I got my rosemary planted. It was in a mini heated greenhouse (not sure of the temperature). A bunch came up a few days ago and are still thriving :)

Yours are much bigger than mine joanna. They are looking really good.

it's still a little early for me to get started with the seeds.

I start the greenhouse up on the 1st of April. Move the barrels out from storage, and set them up to catch the first spring rains, re-install the gas operated window openers on the upper gh windows, put the legs back on the benches, move the oil filled heater into place, and fill the flats with seed starter, and plant seeds.

The perennials and the lettuces in their flats get watered, but if the weather is not cooperating, I hold off on watering the rest of the annuals/veggies until the forecast calls for a few days in a row of warm-ish sunny weather. That usually gets things popping!

I plant about 60-70 flats of seeds each spring. The gas operated window openers keep the greenhouse from overheating in the daytime, and close up when it starts to cool down. the oil filled electric heater is programmable, and keeps the overnight temps at about 55F.

The window openers and the electric heater have proved to be the BEST combination in keeping the greenhouse temps moderate.

dalia, I see by your earlier post that you are growing polemonium I have some seeds on paper towels and they aren't doing anything. Can you clue me in pls. What's the secret?

White Lake, ON(Zone 4b)

Hey, everyone and welcome to Albertarosey! Well, two months since I sowed my hosta seeds they have been in the basement under lights for awhile now and are mostly at the two-leaf stage. I'll post a pic soon.

Will be doing some cuttings and starting some annuals indoors soon, too. Yee-eh.... spring is teasing us here with above average temps.

Thanks for the compliments on my painting, I love painting but right now my art table is covered with my 'grow op' so I'll have to wait until the gh gets going to do any more art work. I've got too many hobbies.

Here's my #3grandchild, Kane, only 6hrs old so not as pretty as your beauties. Your pics are wonderful.

Went to work in my shoes last night and thanks to a blizzard had to wade through knee high snow drifts this a.m. when I came home. Still trying to warm up. Enough already. ti's the winter of my discontent.

AlbertaRosey the 'Apricot Delight' is polemonium carneum and it germinated in warm conditions pressed into the medium. What are you trying? Some species are very slow germinators.

Dahlia.........I had a fun 2 days tromping around Calgary Mon. and today. The roads were aweful there so I stayed at the Travel Lodge (definitly not recommended) I hit Lee Valley, Garden Retreat, GreenGate, rona, Ikea, etc...Any how I think I have all the stuff to get the gh up and running this weekend.
On my visit to Greengate I mentioned to them that my polemonium and Valerian seeds had not germinated and they gave me replacement packages, so now I'll try them again a bit warmer than before. I had them on wet towels, they're still there.
$146.00 for a heavy duty extension cord!!%$^%*%&^$#@! I'm still hyperventilating. I did find a few bargoons though. Ikea had some fairly big terra cotta pots for $7 and picked up some iron pot hangers for $5 ea. at Princess Auto. Got a heater, a fan, and some shade cloth and, and........Man it was cold. I was happy that the gh wasn't running ass I would have spent a fortune keeping it warm.
Wish me luck. Albertarosey

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Glad you had a good tour although the weather was the pits AlbertaRosey. FINALLY this snap is over. Firing up the greenhouse this weekend and moving the babies out. More seeding, seeding, seeding and dahlias, dahlias, dahlias will be my life for 2 or 3 days.
