Can someone please tell me what kind of bug this is?

Saint Paul, MN

This creature is in my basement. This is the second one I have found in a Month. Now we are in full blown freezing cold winter here in MN and it is alive down there.

I thought maybe a wasp of some sort?

Thanks so much in advance for any light on the subject

this is not the place for seeking insect identifications. We have an Insect and Spider Identification forum here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/bugid/all/
and posting to that you would have a very good chance of getting an identification.

Having said that, I was very interested in your wasp and I did a bit of searching and I found that it is the Pelecinid Wasp - Pelecinus polyturator: http://bugguide.net/node/view/134424/bgpage

This unusual wasp has a family of its own and we do not have it represented so far in BugFiles. I have created an entry for it here: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/5515/ and it would be great if you would add your picture to that page so that we can illustrate the species (I would also then use your image to illustrate the family in our index). If you open the page and scroll near the bottom you will find a link labelled: » Upload an image of this bug, and if you use that link you will be able to upload your image,

Thank you Kennedy, I had emailed in the "contact us" page originally & was given a link to upload my image, per the following response: Hi jimandkatie3,

We're sorry, but we can't provide identification help from this
administrative helpdesk (We're here to answer sign-up or log-in
questions, and to help our members and visitors use the site.) Images
do not come through the filters at this desk either.

We have dozens of forums where registered members provide a wealth of
knowledge, experience and information to one another, including a free
forum just for bug identification here:
[HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com]

You can post your image there, and one of our many experts will be
along shortly to help you with the identification.

Happy Gardening,
Melody

Upon clicking on that hyper link, I was re-directed to this area where I uploaded the picture. So, I do apologize for any inconvenience if it was in the incorrect area of the website. I do appreciate your prompt reply on this insect. I will look it up to find out more information. Hopefully I will find out how this creature ended up in my basement!

Kind regards, Katie

Katie,
thanks for adding the picture to BugFiles. Your picture now illustrates the family Pelecinidae in our index: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/browse/order.php?bid=138
