Bill - beautiful shot of the wall in winter. It really is so pretty!
Weez - LOL ...that's very clever!!
Are you spending less on gardening?
jen - let's see geisha, eskimo sunset, shigitatsusawa, shishitatsusawa, ashizuru, peaches&cream, kotomara, koto-no-iti, higasayama, villa taranto, aconitifolum - there are three outside over wintering that are not handy and one called abigale ------ that still needs to be ordered - i guess that is more than 11.
venu - i'll have to remember that more bark for the buck - very good:)
wha according to the 'Free Money' Garden Budget Theory you still have $70 dollars to spend. Shop away!
i think there is some fuzzy math there dnut :) gotta save some for the incrediball hydrangea's and that pink annabelle the victor spotted.
If our Nova Zembla rhody breaks any more branches we may have to replace it. I hope not, bought about knee high from the garden center & now well up to the 2nd story.
I too have a stash wha: for my 'Orchid Lights' azalea and 'Blue Shadow' fothergilla and other things that I will see and MUST HAVE from the PNW.
i got a couple blue shadows last fall and looking forward to them this year.
just heard that a pool supply company around the corner from work had a gun shooting incident this morning. two employees got into a fight - i know most of the guys there - they bust my chops when i go past wearing dallas cowboy's paraphernalia when i go running at lunch - evidently they just laid off 50% of the work force a couple days ago. victim is in critical condition - glad i was not going by when this happened. economy is bringing out the worst in folks.
i just got a bill for $512 from the plumber for fixing the heat in the beginning of Jan. :( Any spending I might have imagined myself doing just evaporated.
You're right, Bill. Hope the injured guy is OK.
Sounds like that story out of CA a man that was laid off shot and killed wife, kids and himself. unreal
edited for spelling

How upsetting, Bill! With things so bad down here, we are seeing tragedies daily caused by the economic situation. This county has the largest number of foreclosures in the country and very high unemployment, especially in the construction sector, so the news is terribly grim every morning. My heart just breaks for so many people under such stress. I don't think I'd want to be as close as you were today! Sorry to hear it.
our heating burner popped a leak right after it was cleaned 2 weeks ago - evidently they loosened the rust holding in the hot water - they patched it and that didn't take and came back and put in a heating system version of fix-a-flat. not a permanent fix - and it still is leaking on and off a bit - big $$$$ to get fixed - trying to find the manual, it is within warranty - company just changed policy a year ago and it only applies to original owner. if i am lucky enough to find the manual, hoping there is nothing in there about the original owner.
unexpected possible expense although we have the $$ if needed.
i really was friendly with these guys barking at me over the yard microphone - i'm hoping i do not know either of them. boston.com just posted that the guy shot had life threatening injuries.
my brother coaches the owners son in hockey - have to poke around to find out what happened.
Hope it turns out better than it sounds!
Too close, wha! Way too close.
heard on the news that the guy shot did not make it - hard to understand what brings people to this point
So sorry to hear that, Bill! Sometimes life just doesn't make any sense!
Oh, darn, drat, Bill, words I can't say on here. Louise is right, it JUST DOESN'T make sense! I absolutely second that.
saw on the late news that the shooter as an older black man who was a janitor there - i spoke with this guy every day pretty much - he was a very polite nice man - what ever the riff was between he an the other guy it must have been serious.
i was poking around the web pricing jm's for the heck of it and went to forest farm - went through and "ordered two" just see the cost. shipping was 50% of the trees plus a surcharge for one due to size.
then i went to wildwood and got pricing on the same two trees - pricing of the trees was different - however the shipping was only 13% of the order. and an overall saving of $60.
just amazing
Thats a big difference!
50% shipping is robbery - rarefind is 25%, greer's is 28% - all three are the same quality packaging. wildwood is unique - they ship in the usps try corner boxes if that is understandable - they tie up the branches tight - never had a problem with them and no tree damage.
I got 3 JM's from Wildwood and they were great.
You're right; 50% is too much. Maybe that's why i never actually ordered anything from FF.
I'm so excited this morning! The first of my dahlia seedlings has a bloom on it! I also harvested a bunch of my zinnias grown from seed and we enjoyed a wonderful dinner last night with friends. The menu was largely from our gardens and trees....wonderful mesculin greens with tomatoes and a cold broccoli/bacon salad with grapes (not ours), green beans with sauteed almonds (only the green beans were ours) and a fruit bowl that had our tangerines in it. It was yummy and oh so economical! LOL
YAY Louise! I have to tell you, that first sentence had me going ... she harvested zinnias for dinner? but then I read the rest of your post and my mouth started watering! I am going to try to grow beans this year. Are they hard to grow? Up here , not down there? Happy Dahlia Day!
Carrie - I reread that first sentence and got a laugh out of it. Hasn't anyone here had zinnias for the main course??? What kind of gardeners are we anyway???? LOL
In my experience, green beans practically grow themselves if you get the right varieties. The ones I just planted have already germinated. If they get sufficient moisture and some fertilizer, they are perfect for newbies to grow. I just ordered some more seeds from Johnny's Seeds. For bush beans I like Provider and Jade. I am trying a new pole bean, Fortex, for this summer. I also ordered some spinach and should be able to harvest that before we leave here. Of course I also ordered more zinnia seeds for dinner parties in NH this summer. LOL
Dahllia picture please! Dahlia picture please! (hopping around like a bunny with excitement).
Look at that perfectly luvly big bud! WHOOO HOOOO DonnieBrook yours may be the very first dahlia of 2009! May I please post this on the Dahlia Forum? I'm so excited I can't stand it.
By all means, Dahlia!! We can have a contest to guess what color it will be. LOL That should keep some winter shut-ins' minds sharp! I feel like a proud mama since these guys came from seeds!!!
i just learned about co-ops - or should say took the time to check out what is happening there - i think the nickle and dimes are going to add up - oh and celeste is a bad influence sending links to wet my appetite and lighten my wallet! :)
Sorry.....lol I just bought more Echi's and im already for Monday morning when the Glad/Lily one opens. My list is all made for that one!!
Wha, a new Terra nova Helleborus coop started today. They are going quickly. plugs at 6.49 each.
DonnieBrook, I was talking to my friend in Sanibel yesterday and getting a urge to head south, though your weather has been cool this year. We got a dusting of snow last night so I could see were all the rabbits and deer are browsing. They are eating anything this year. Patti

I was mesmorized by the header...
For those gardening on a budget - successfully starting hydrangeas from cutting is very easy - even I can do it. I have three Niki I started last summer now emerging after being dormant for a while. I plan to try some more this June - especially purple hydrangea!
i saw the Terra nova Helleborus coop and have been looking at them in catalogs too - they say they bloom in the winter - my question is how do you see them under the snow.
