Nursery Hunting trip to the valley in Texas

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I knew you would know much more than me, Lin and I do sincerely thank you for your help!

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Gail,
Very nice haul you got there... We don't have anything good around here....

Susan.......I am guessing that the only reason we have so many good nurseries even here around my home is because they can stay open and busy 12 months out of the year...........it wouldn't be very profitable for someone to be open only 6 months out of the year.

That does make sence.... I still wish.... Jim sent me some leaves and two are getting babies one is Mello Yellow can anyone point me in the right direction to find this one as I can't.... Thanks.

Do you think it could be Bristol's Mellow Jello? I can tease about Jim's handwriting on the plastic bags! (LOL)

I've heard of Strep. Mellow Jello and Smithiana(sp?) Mellow Yellow.I don't know if that helps.
Lynn

Looks like Gail beat me to it.^_^.

Depending on where you stay Jim-- some hotels have a DSL port in the room-- all you need is a cord. Go to the hotel website and it should say.

We have had a gorgeous winter, I just got finished trimming in my yard. Such a joy. Winter is our best time.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Sally, I live 18 miles away from you and my winters are not glorious in any way. You must not be trying to protect as many tropical plants as I am. Today is beautiful.......a gift from above, but today is not a typical January or February day in Taft, Texas.

Even with the sun today the winds are gusting here about 35 mph. I sprayed for whiteflies on the front porch but couldn't spray the plants outside because of the wind.

This morning was not cold but the last week has brought every morning a temp of at least 40 degrees or below. Two weeks ago it was freezing in the mornings.

Maybe there is just that much difference in 18 miles apart.

Gail,
Do you think that Orchid Tree would grow in San Antonio? My sister would love it!

Gail, it makes a big difference in weather where you are. We are close to the gulf. We have many, many plants. I have not had to do anything. Just bring a few in, like the Desert Rose. In the sunroom. There is no heater there. We have fences, trees etc, near the gulf. The lows at night have not been bad. The days have been glorious! Usually the 70's! I walk every day so I pay attention so I know what to wear, jacket, sweater, or tshirt.

Forty degrees for a low in Jan. is pretty good for most plants. I have some tropicals but many other plants that easily grow in that weather. Flowers of all kinds, various plants. My Encore azaleas have bloomed every day. We don't have a huge wind problem. I keep everything watered and we have a sprinkler system so it is easy. Pansies, impatients, nasturtiums, snapdragons, stock, allysum, penta, etc. They are all fine. I plant things that love winter when fall comes.

I hate summer with all my heart so I love cool weather as long as it isn't 32 degrees or lower. I live for the fall, winter and spring here. Just a half hour to the west, the weather is different at night and of course warmer in summer, so this is a great place for gardening.

Sounds wonderful Sally!

I liked 4 seasons in both New Braunfels and Austin for gardening personally. Here we go from winter to summer and summer to winter.

South, TX

It is very nice. My mom is just two hours away, they have had freezes. Water really does keep the temps from going too far up or down.

I have lived in Arkasas and TN and had snow in winter etc. I love it here, but everyone is different. I love to have blooms outside all year. I had the same sort of weather in CA, just so pretty. I love to visit snow, but I get tired of cold weather and no green grass in winter.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lynn, there are so many Bauhinia trees and I am sure that the one I am showing is not very hardy since it is thriving in the valley. But, we had a discussion one time and I found out that there are varieties of this tree that would grow in San Antonio.

There was also a lively discussion as people from Texas think it is an invasive plant, but since I have only seen two of these trees since I moved home over 5 years ago, they can't be too invasive here and in San Antonio.

I would think that Turner Nursery in Corpus Christi would know....they are the most knowledgeable people in the nursery business about such things. I also know that there are a couple of kinds of orange, satsuma and other citrus fruit trees that will grow here if I would just get them planted.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Thanks,Gail^_^.
