Please help me

(Zone 5a)

I need some information from anyone who KNOWS anything about Praying Mantis. I posted a picture with what I think is his tongue sticking out but my old sperm bank thinks that they don't stick out there tongues...please help me settle this matter.

Longview, TX

I dont remember them sticking out a tongue....they grab their prey with their arms.....and start devouring it. Also I believe the female mantis will kill her male companion after they have sex...

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

I don't think they have tongues. That may be a bit of left over dinner. Not sure!

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

uhmmm, not sure about the "after" killing...I think it is before...i think i heard somewhere where the female rips the males head off first and this makes the male in the mood...not sure though.

Oh my goodness GH you sound just like my Old Bucket lol. I would hate to have to eat crow for the rest of the week. I can never tell him his is right, there will be no living with him, so I will just lie and say I was right lol.

Don't know 'bout having a tongue but agree
with GH' I have many preying mantis, love them
but they also eat my good garden friends(lady
bugs,lacewings,etc. Watched the discovery chnl.
a few weeks ago and they will kill another
mantis if hungry, but didn't say anything 'bout
after mating,don't know'

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

Okay..this is what I've found out about the mating, still working on the tongue thing: *Reproduction*
Mating occurs and eggs are produced in the autumn. Although the female of some species of praying mantises is known for eating the head of its mate after copulation, this rarely occurs in this species and when it does, it may be an artifact of captivity. The egg sacks (oothecae) are deposited on flat open surfaces between Febuary and continue through to April . Laying can take between 3-5 hours. The female produces between 2-5 egg sacks which hold between 5-70 eggs each. The mantis passes the winter in the egg stage and is triggered to emerge by warming spring temperatures. When the nymphs emerge in the spring, all the hatchlings hatch within 11 days of each other. Nymphs pass through six stages (instars). Each stage lasts between 10-15 days and it can take between 3-6 months before the mantis is mature.

They have hinged mandibles which sort of stick out when they are extended, so it might look like they are sticking out a "tongue"

JustMeL you have to admit that your first answer was so funny, how could eating his head off before she gets the goodies help her get any after he's dead lol.
I am so glad that you cleared it up for us.

Thanks WoodS I think I'll use your answer on the OB so I don't have to admit that I was wwwrrroo, see I can't even say it now lol.

Kelly33 You couldn't be the Black Dahlia, she wasn't married nor did she kill anyone. She was the one that was cut half in two and her body was thrown in a field in Hollywood while trying to become an actress. Your thinking about the Black Widow, she killed her husbands.

Palmyra, VA(Zone 7a)

Lisa
So what you are saying is the the male is willing to lose his head insteand of staying captive? LOL

LOL here!Man O man, there'd be no males left in the world if human females did kill after! Well, sometimes they do look pretty dead after... LOL!

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)
