Joe Pye seed sowing in Central Florida

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

I have a little Joe Pye seed and want to get them started. I've seen directions that say scarify, so thought I'd just put them in some pots and container and stick in the fridge. We don't get that many days of cold weather here in Central Florida. ( well, not usually tho we've had a run of about a week now of nights in the low to upper 30's here) .Anyhow, how long would I need to leave them in the fridge. Also, do I need to do the same w/ Purple Coneflower? I'm pretty new at the seed sowing thing.

The purple coneflower seed does not need to be cold treated.
You do have to cover the seed with soil as it needs darkness to germinate.
Don't know about the Joe Pye weed as I have never had any luck with it. It grows wild here so I get plants that seem to come back every year, but never have started them from seed.
Since they are small, probably cold treat for at least three months over the winter in your fridge. Then leave them on top of soil and just press them into it to contact but not cover and place them in a pot to monitor their germination. Cover the pot with a piece of plastic wrap until you see any small growth.Do keep the pot out of direct sunlight.

I'm really confused about this now. I've been told No cold treat, Yes, or put in soil in baggy in fridge till see sprouts, or even peat pots in a tray in the fridge. Beginning to think I should have just bought the coneflower plants, but I can't find plants for Joe Pye anywhere so would have to start from seed if I want them.

mj, I think you got these seeds from me. You can always contact me with questions about seeds I've sent.
I've been growing these succesful. Leave the seeds for about 4 weeks in temperatures between +4°C and - 4°C ( that is between +39°F - +25°F), so you can use the coldest part of your fridge. After that you can sow them at 20°C (68°F). Cover the seeds very, very thin. Germination can be quite irregular and can take up to 6 weeks.

Yes, Jonna I got the Joe Pye from you. Ok..the Joe Pye everyone is pretty consistent on the cold treatment.
But the Purple ConeFlower I got from someone else.

I guess I should have clarified that it is the one I'm confused about now. I was told cold treatment for them too, then not, then yes, then not........

LOL! Sounds like some of the customer service people I have been dealing with in trying to get some answers.
I would imagine that it is dependent upon your climate for the coneflower seed.
I just harvest them and store them and plant them in the spring. They also self sow really well.
Never have cold treated them.

Well, the best is to treat the purple coneflower the same as the Joe Pye, but I was also succesfull sowing them in summer (for you it must be done now, summer at your place will be too hot) , without cold treatment. If you have enough seeds you can try both ways.

Here is a data base for all kinds of seeds. You may find your answer here.
