2009 Furry Friends: pictures, stories and anecdotes

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Thought it would be fun to share pictures of some of our furry, fuzzy and feathered friends. This past fall we had to get our bunny Chai (Dark brown) a new man, Stormy crossed over the rainbow bridge and she was terribly lonely so along came Charlie (Grey rex)......

I found Charlie on craigslist and when we went to pick him up we where surprised to see it was from the same lady that I had gotten some free paper feedsacks from earlier in the year (again on craigslist!) They worked great for my lasagna (sp?) bed. Anyway, I digress; Charlie was one of many critters on the farm. Well..... As many of you know I'm a farmgirl through and through.... As the saying goes you can take the girl out of the country but you can't take the country out of the girl. Charlie was not the only critter that came home with us that day. So did two ducklings and six chicks! Here are Daffy and Darla all grown up now.

Out of six chicks four survived. My heated greenhouse worked very well for them to grow and feather out in. Here is Roosty (grey) and Henrietta (red, green, mulit-color) I think that she is just gorgeous!

Here is "Little" I'm pretty sure she's a Bantam

When I brought the chicks home I had just cleaned out my greenhouse from the summer, all of the pots where stacked and cleaned out and everything was nicely organized. Well my chickies have rearranged!

Love your menagerie Rachel. Especially Scrappy.

Thanks Thistle. I love em too!

Hey Rach...sorry to hear about Stormy. I'm sure he's having a great ol' time with all the others who have crossed over before him. A great big DG welcome to all the new kids at your place. Nice to have some helpers keeping thing in order in the greenhouse, eh? I can't believe how big Scrappy has gotten. He's not a little guy anymore and has grown into a fine young man. I'm just really happy that his ear never stood up. He's so precious! I love how his little eyes are kinda scrunchy, like he's smiling at you...which he probably is.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Hi Rach, LOVE your new chickens. They are so pretty. Love the rabbits also.

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Thanks to all. Outta, that would be Scrappy's "looking mom I'm sitting, now give me some love please" look. I too am very glad that his other ear never stood up, it's his trademark!

That Scrappy sure did grow up into a handsome fellow, but still full of character! The new feathered friends look so happy in their new digs.

I hope Chai is recovering from her sorrow, and you as well

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Scrappy has a wink. Ears tell all.

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Holly,
Chai has recovered just fine. She has really taken to having a "younger man" around the house! I have had Chai for four years and she was an adult when I got her. Charlie is just over a year old, good thing that I got him neutered before I let them share a home! Thank you for your kind thoughts.

My Doggly had a close call towards the end of December. He stopped eating and would only drink if I set the dish right between his paws, and his urine was very dark. I could not get him out to the vet because of the snow, but talked with him on the phone and was advised that if I didn't get him taking food he would likely not make it. He is now 16, and a big guy. Vet said, "Well you know, he has lived 2 or 3 years longer than anybody thought he would" The man is good with animals, but a bit blunt with people. However, since I was all snowed in and got to stay home from work with my dog, I gave him lots of personal care, got him eating canned pumpkin ( advised by the kindness of our own Kathy here on DG) and refried beans, got ahold of some wet dogfood and fed him that in small amounts frequently through the day. He started to perk up, went on short walks, and is doing much, much better now. Thank you, thank you Kathy!!! The vet was amazed.

Here is my fella in his favorite element...

Aww, he's so sweet!

Willow, your babies look so well groomed and cute! My guy is definitely the old man of the hills compared to them.

Great pictures of the pups. I'm glad they're all doing so well. Patricia, your DH's son's dog looks like he might have a little Corgi in him.

That Doggly certainly has more than 1 life - you did it all, Holly. Canned pumpking and a little (or a lot of) love. LOL

Willow, your Mindy looks just like my Sheldon!

this was right after his surgery.....he was such a trooper! came thru it all and is running around and playing as if he were a puppy again! I guess he is trying to make up for lost time! lol!

Sheldon is a doll.

Frankie is a mini daushund.

Everyone's fur kids are darling! Holly so glad to heat that Doggly is back to his old self again! Kathy is a lifesaver when it comes to the fur kids, she is a walking encyclopedia of dog and kitty health! Thank you Kathy, your the best! Now can you tell me how to get Scrappy to stop rolling in sh*t! No matter what I do with compost, chicken sh*t, duck sh*t, etc he manages to dig it up and roll in it until it's embedded in his ruff! He's already had two showers this week! Little twirp!

I'm hoping these six dove that were in my flower bed today will be visible

Can you find all six? This pic is the first try.

I'm afraid that I, too, struggle with the sh(t thing. I put seveal bags of chicken manure in my rose bed and it was a couple of weeks before I could let the dogs outside without monitoring them - all they wanted to do was eat it.

I'm guessing that Scrappy came back negative for the MDR1 mutation? Thats gooooood.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Patricia, that's very cool. Are they regular visitors?

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Katie- Yes he was negative on the MDR test so he can eat as much sh*t as he pleases, I just prefer that he doesn't roll in it and then lay on our bed!!!

Willow- I found four of the doves, the other two must be "incognito!"

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I saw only four, also.

Rach - he's so smart maybe you could teach him to take a shower before he comes inside . . . your dad could build you the shower.

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Good idea Katie!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I only saw 4 also, not counting the one in my feeder.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Patricia - it looks like you have us stumped.

Port Angeles, WA(Zone 8b)

I see 4 whole and 1 half (the back end). Can't find the 6th, though. Reminds me of "Hidden Pictures" in the old "Highlights" magazines (I loved that!)

Outta
In the cold days of winter I play Big Fish games. They have lots of Hide and Seek Games. Very fun. You can play most games for an hour for free.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

There are two behind the piece of concrete on the left and the sixth one is on the right side under the Rhodie sort of to the back. They are here all the time but come in for birdseed in the winter.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh.

Linda, shame on you - all I need is to get stuck on more free online games. :-) Checking Big Fish now, thanks!
