There was an interesting piece that aired on NPR's Science Friday program today. While they specifically talked about animal hunting practices, plants too were mentioned. The basis of the discussion was a study that showed that the encouragement of hunting the larger animals of a species and the encouragement of throwing back smaller fish and keeping the big ones is leading to a genetic preference for the smaller, less viable offspring.
This was also related to market societies where the best produce goes to market because it brings the best prices while the lesser specimens go to seed, resulting in the diminution of the variety.

seed saving and evolution
As long as gardeners share their seeds variety will stay good. Most gardeners will only collect the best seeds.
