I forgot what this was...Don't get confused with the nil leaves in the photo. I think it was some Australian ipo...
What's this?
Hi Martin - Could you post a clear closeup of the sepal view...
Thanks...
Ron
Ipomoea hederacea

notice the sepal tips curving downwards...

Those sepals look just like my ebay-obtained Chinese MG 'Jian Haun'. The leaves are quite different from the DG Plantfiles photo...I guess there is considerable variation in this trait, Ron, for this species? In fact, the leaves look just like this one: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/198386/

Joseph - The leaves vary more than the sepals, but if the sepals remain arched downward, the species is I.hederacea...(there are some strains of I.indica and I.nil which have sepals that will bend downward only for very short periods of time and then revert back to an almost straight vertical position with little to no arching or bending)
I'm going to venture that the correct spelling on the chinese strain would be 'Jian Huan'...

Martin - I am amazed at all the different leave shapes that I.hederacea can produce! Ironcially, I grew two this past season and one had heart shaped leaves and the other was more like that of an I. nil leaf. Very cool! They bloomed constantly for me. :-)
Actually I think the chinese strain was originally described as originating from 'Jia Huan' or 'Ji Huan'...

Okay so lets see if I have it right .. sepals down =Ipomoea hederacea, curving up.. i nil... and the purpeas?
Joseph: P~ just learnin' u know.. I can grow em.. its talking the talk that has me down! LOL
oh, those are up also.. are the purpureas typically fuzzy then? ( The pure white of Joespehs and the jpg SOH are fuzzy so far, no blooms to see sepals yet
We should be more precise, so newbies will understand this, too...we are not talking about the sepals on the blooms, we are talking about sepals on seedpods. While purpureas quite logically also flour with the sepals up, once pollination has been successful and seedpods are forming, the seedspods will bend over and point downwards together with the sepals unlike the nils, the seedpods/sepals of which will point upwards.
I haven't had seedspods from hederacea, so I don't know what happens with the seedpods there, but we could identify them by the curled sepals anyway.
Martin
okay, well I am going back to another post by Ron C wo identified a bunch of pods and seedlings for me I am sure I have a hederacera, purpurea and i. nil all togther.. ( don't ask me how)
Joseph , I can't wait to start some of the seeds you sent as well as Evr, Ronnie , and a few of Beckys..
Debra - Could you clarify ... do you have several species growing in the same pot or is there a question to the ID of a particular vine that you are growing. Could you give us the link to the post with photo that you are talking about? I must've missed this one...
Thanks, Joseph, I much appreciate that, which reminds me that I should start my Moroccan MGs, too.
Martin
Becky the post was way back in early fall, I had a bunch of seed pods out from theback yard.. and that s when he told me what they were as well as some of the posts of pics i had posted.. right now the multi planted pot is the one that looks like a tea pot..
