what to plant in new container?

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

I was lucky enough to receive this terrarium for Christmas. I've done terrariums under lights before, but I'd like to put this one on the dining room table, which is not near a window. I'm curious what you would suggest for a deep shade sort of situation. I'd love to have a bed of moss and then something tall or spikey in the center, very architectural. Suggestions?

Most plants need some light. I don't know of one that needs no light if there is no window close by.

baby's tears(helxine solereii)...they seem to be ok in deep shade, but will get more leggy in deep shade.

I have one container similar to yours, but I keep it in a north window. I have two climbing miniature ivy in there, and two miniature ferns. They are quite happy, ...in fact the ivy(it is so cute!) is starting to climb, and has almost reached the tippy top of the container. I've been wanting to find some dollhouse arbor to put in there for it...

Maybe you can put something to add interest and height, without all of them having to be plants?...Something simple like a bed of moss and a tiny resin dollhouse bench would be cute and would work in a dark situation.

...just random thoughts, lol...

Congrats on your nice gift. :0)

oh, and miniature african violets seem to do well even in dim light...

here is a link that sells the teensy ivy:
it is called ficus pumilla 'quercifolia'

the frst picture(once you click the plant) is in a tiny 2"pot(to give you an idea how tiny the leaves are).

Thanks. For now I just have a bed/lawn of moss and some old rusted doll house size garden furniture in there. It looks pretty cool like it is, so I don't know if I'll ever add another plant or not. :)

Glass jars/terrariums don't always have to have plants. Yours sounds really cute with the moss and miniature rusty garden furniture! I hope you will post a picture for us! I love little vignettes like that. I can picture a terrarium with a little garden shed and miniature garden tools etc.

A few years ago I bought some large glass cookie jars with lids at Wal-Mart. I planted one with live plants for me and since my sister and my niece aren't into live plants I did one for my niece with white sand in the bottom, placed a mirror in the sand (to look like water), placed small sea shells and bits of drift wood on the sand, and stuck a little artificial palm tree and a couple of other plants down into the sand. It turned out to be a cute beachy theme.

At the time I had a couple of porcelain angel statues that I wanted to use so I planted one of the cookie jars with live plants for me and used one of the angel's in it. The other terrarium for my sister, I put teeny gravel in the bottom, some moss in one area, artificial greenery, a small mirror (again for "water"), and I laid a flat rock on the gravel ,with an angel sitting on the rock ... looking into the "water".

I have a lot of glass jars/terrariums planted up with plants but one that I found at a furniture store a couple of years ago while shopping with a friend wasn't in an area getting enough light so the plants began to fade. I have since removed all the plants and soil and done a seascape type thing with sand and shells. I will post a couple of photo's.

I can't find the pictures of the ones I did for my sister and my niece with artificial plants but you can see mine with live plants in this group.

As you can see, I love planting in glass.

I have a lot of glass jars planted as terrariums. This one I found at a furniture store a couple of years ago while shopping with a friend. I had it sitting on a table where it wasn't getting enough light so the plants began to fade.

I have since removed all the plants and soil and done a seascape type thing with sand and shells. I will post a couple of photo's.

This is what it looked like when I first planted it:

And, how it looks today with sand and shells.

Oops, I will go take it down and take a picture close up so you can actually see what's in it:

That is really pretty!!! Great idea! Containers can be little worlds of their own with or without live plants.

Oh I love them all but my fav is the one with the sand on the coffee table its very pretty..

We do our jars a little different, Over the years when we visit the beach or go camping over at Dolphin Island we look for shells or bits of drift wood and tiny shells.. Because both my girls have jars with white sand in them and they add all these little things and a couple of big things from each trip.. There is enough sand to cover all the items, the fun comes in when you move the jar around. kind of shake it a bit and it will have a different scene everytime.. and I can hear OOOOH thats my fav shell, I picked it up down by the pier.. It helps them remember. .. lol Its late and I am not sure if any of that made any sense.. lol

Dirtroad-
I love the idea of being able to shake it and make a new scene :0)

Ecobioangie-
so can we see a picture of yours? I'd love to see it :0)
