My boyfriend and I go camping at Lake Wapuson (located between Shreve,Ohio and Wooster,Ohio )a lot in the spring/summer/fall.We have an RV there (along with a truck camper in Wellsville).Anyway,at our camp site at Lake Wapuson,we have a big tree..not sure of the tree's id,but we had a bad windstorm in that area about fall of 2008 and a lot of the leaves from the tree fell onto our porch. On a LOT of those leaves,I noticed these brown round cocoon-like formations on the leaves.Out of curiosity,I decided to cut one open to see what was inside. The brown cocoon-like things on the leaves are hard..usually cocoons are soft...well,anyway, I found a couple of orange-red like worm type things inside.I knew they were alive because they moved..they didnt move like walk, but rather move like ....i'm trying to figure out how to say this..like,they scrunched up to a smaller size.I was wondering if anyone knows what they are..I have been trying to find info on them since I found them.
CLOSED: CLOSED: Some kind of insect cocoon????
These are larvae of a Cynipid gall wasp. Here in Europe we have very similar gall wasps (genus Cynips), but for the USA I am not sure of the genus.
Erwin
These are galls; usually hard round galls on oak leaves are caused by small wasps in the family Cynipidae, but the larvae seen in your image look more like those of midges in the family Cecidomyiidae. In either case, leaf galls are very common oaks, but seldom result in serious harm to the tree.
