Can I prune New Zeland tea tree

I have a very large New Zeland tea tree, which is actually a shrub, I'm wondering if I can cut the lower branches to make it into more of a tree form without damaging the plant.

I've seen people train them as standards on occasion so I would think you could give it a try.
