I got 2 bulbs from American Meadows today. Looks like they might be suitable for my area. Who has experience w/ this one?
who grows lily auratum, aka Lily of Japan
Me. It grows much like an oriental lily here and winters over nicely here in zone 5. I have in in partial sun, so it doesn't get scorched. It's quite nice.
Maybe in your zone it would need to be dug out and given that cold period.

oh rats! The AM description said hardy to zone9, but we know that's not always accurate, don't we? Oh well, so it shall be a pretty annual for me, sigh...
Ya never know ~ you might get lucky. :)
hiya moby. nothing like hijacking your own thread. is there such a thing as a pink easter lily, I guess a longiflorum but pink instead of white? is it rare? I've never heard of that.
Hiya Nery! There are some gorgeous pink LO lilies with the classic Easter lily look. I really want 'Pink Heaven'

The Lily Garden is offering 'Prince Promise' and 'Pink Promise' - I love Pink Promise!

Like Moby says about auratum, she's not sure. Nor am I. L. auratum might do fine in z9, but I am sure it won't take full sun in your heat. It will probably be normal for it to die back earlier in the summer too. I'd mulch it well to keep the summer soil as cool as possible.
I grow Lilium auratum way up here in zone 4, and have seedlings started from fall 2007.
I am in zone 6-7 and Oriental lilies Do not like the heat and humidity. More like annuals than Perennials.

Anybody see this Pink Jazz? http://lilybulb.com/l9040.html
Man, I'd have it in a heartbeat but for the price.
Here's a breath of summer on a cold, icy night ~
L. auratum did not last even one season for me. I since learned that it requires excellent drainage, even more so than most commonly grown lilies. It is native to volcanic soils in Japan and grew well in the species fields of Ed McRae on Mt. Hood.
Here it rains most all fall, winter and spring and my soil is slow draining clay, so it wasn't a happy camper!
Moby! You are teasing!
Neal!!!! and hi everybody else. Neal, those selections are to die for. Pard, I am saving what you said for when it's time to plant.
Pink Jazz is really Easterish
Pink Jazz is gorgeous! Maybe I'll be able to afford in the next 10 years, LOL.
I think I am just plain old desperate for lily picture posting. I've hardly seen any other color around here than the usual white of snow, that appears on at least a bi-weekly basis, to add to the former stack of it. And it never fails, that after hours of manual shoveling, the minute you think you are done, the plow comes by to give you more work to do.
Do deliver spring to me soon and do keep sharing those lily pictures.
Nice pard, the color almost reminds me of orange sherbet. Yum!
well, duh! I realized these weren't going to be shipped by American Meadows until April, so I just called them and cancelled and got some goodies from Lisa instead.
Have you gotten the B&B catalog? some beauties there but what struck me most was that the catalog seemed skinnier than usual. am I dreaming this?
Good move vossner ;) Any lily of Lisa's is going the beat the heck out of American Meadows, hands down.
You lucky duck vossner, it's too cold to order those Marketplace Buggy Crazy beauties in the frozen tundra. Plant a couple for me, will you? ;)
I would agree that the B&D offerings are slimmer than in year's past. It could be an economic decision. I don't know how well places like this are doing these days either. I thought Lily Pad had fewer lily offerings than usual too. I hope they all come out of this downturn okay.
my fave local nursery raised prices about 25% across the board. Even though my DDH doesn't believe me, i am pretty much done w/ acquisitions. I will get annuals for the patio but I will be saving my money to make a big bulb purchase in the fall.
My bulbs from Buggycrazy arrived yesterday and they were the size of apples. Those babies are planted.

O, Carefree, planted to grow thru my Carefree Sunshine rose.
You are one lucky duck planting in January!
