Oh my gosh, my pigeon laid 2 eggs!

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

Great idea! I bet they'd help for sure, especially if you put hot pads and foil under them to direct the heat up.

Do you use the chemical ones or the charcoal stick ones?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I wonder if you could put it into a zippy bag and then put it right in the water dish, just float it.

(Zone 7b)

As long as water couldn't get to it i guess so.
I was thinking more of like sitting one of those plastic thin walled bowls on thier....a margarine bowl like that.

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

happy b-day uggie baby!!!!! awesome, i'm so happy for u, doing happy dance!! congrats on being a new momma!!! the other egg should be a day or 2 behind if they started to sit after first egg was laid it will make them speratic. if they waited till egg 2 was laid to start setting then they should hatch same day or next morning.

haha, i know she is beautiful but i don't know what color she is,lol. she is a baby from my black mom and almond dad but she looks gray/black. at first i thought she was a blue bar but is not. she is up and walking on her own and eating on her own now and trying to learn to fly already!! i can't find a flashlight to candle so will be a bit before i will know for sure if they r good or not, lol.

mine started to not sit so much once she hit about 8-10 days once they have pin feathers is when they start to get their own body heat. in a few days even when not completely open pins it should still have it's own body heat. just keep an eye on them cuz pretty quick they won't set to warm them anymore and they will only feed mabe 2-3 times a day for a few days before they stop feeding once they get them weened. in that time is when u got to watch they stay warmer.

if u can run a cord to them a light bulb fixture in a cookie tin will help to keep waterers thawed if u place the waterer on top of the tin with the 40-60 watt light on inside.
silkie

(Zone 7b)

I have a 150 watt bulb in a brooder light and it keeps my water thawed. My pigeons the male always feeds the babys at least 2 or 3 weeks after they leave the nest. This is when if they feel so inclined the female will lay more eggs sometimes they do and sometimes they don't.
I don't pressure mine like some breeders who remove the babys so they will lay more. I don't do the 2 nest thing either so they will lay in the other while still raiseing the babys that has to be stressful on them.
When mine lay and have babys is up to them and i leave the babys until i see them to big to be fed and harassing the parents for food.

and here is baby uggie!!

Mom went out to get a quick swig of water when I switched it, and I took a quick pic. Real quick, so it's not a great pic, but you can see some yellowish fuzz on it!

Oooo, pretty birdies. I especially like the grey one... or would that be blue?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

She's kind of mottled, this is her in the sun in the fall. She has iridescent green and purple feathers in her neck, and then some grey/beige tones in her wings. She is very pretty.

Nice. =0)
It'll be fun to see how the babies turn out.

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

all ur babies r gorgous!! can't wait to see who ur uggies grow up to look like. u will have loads of fun watching them as they grow, they change so much day by day.

squeaker is i think to big to be in with mine she is harassing them now,lol i don't think they r to happy with it and they want to be on the new nest they did. i was gonna ask u harm, if i can take her out now and if she needs to be by herself or if she can go in with my younger pair who r unmated? i didn't plan to 2 nest but they r doing nests on the floor and i'm trying to break them so they think 2 nests is good but i worry she will disturb the new eggs since she is fully walking now. so is it ok to seperate her cuz i don't want them stressing?

(Zone 7b)

As long as you are 100% positive she is eating and drinking on her own you can remove her. How old is she now?
Are the others almost adults if so then they will see her as and invader and may peck her. If they are young birds then it should be okay you will know immediatly if they except her or not. They will either attack her or ignore her keep a close eye on them either way.
Pigeons will literally peck a hole in another pigeons head and injure them badly.

Clarksburg, MO

Moxy- Congrats on your new little pigeon. Now i thinking i would like some. You guysare sure making this an addicting hobby.

Congrats again and hoping to see the other little feller tommorrow

Sheila

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

she was born the 29th. yes she eats and drinks on her own they feed her mabe once a day still if she bugs them enough. the others r about 5-6mths old i'd say. i think to be safe i will keep her by herself but i'm affraid she will be lonely. i think she is to friendly i don't want to chance they will hurt her, just means we get to spoil her more since she will be by herself. i'll set a cage up tomarrow for her.
thanks!!
mar

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

How sweet! She is so cute!! (baby) Do you think the other will hatch or no?
Thanks for the pic. Thats great!!!

londonderry, Australia

they usualy hatch 24 hours apart

(Zone 7b)

Sounds good silkie if shes feeding herself then shes okay to move. Pigeons are very protective of their space and won't allow any interlopers to intrude or they risk a good pecking.

I'm glad she did so well it being your first uggie.

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Congrats on your new baby!!
My dail-up is soooo slow but I finally got a good look at your uggy baby! She's so cute and wrinkly! I hope the other egg hatches soon.

On a quick side question, Claire: I looked up eggplant lavenday touch and you had a nice pic of the blossom and I was wondering how you liked the eggplant itself?

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

Here's an ignoramous question...
How come these are called uggies, when a new born chick looks like something the cat acked up? (until it dries off.)

Jay

Clarkson, KY

I think it's that cats 'ack' and Harmony 'ugg' s -Don't quote me though! ;-)

(Zone 7b)

Uggie babys refers to how ugly they are when their hatched.

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

That's my question... so should we call hatchling chicks 'pukies'?
;o)

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

actually pigeon babies if for food r called squabs and if for pets r called sqeakers. i call them when they r really little uggie babies cuz they r faces only a momma could love, lol they r kinda freaky take a bit to get used to for most people.

this is my squeaker when it was born. look at that face, rotfl.

Thumbnail by silkiechick
(Zone 7b)

I mean you really can't call these pretty so we call them uggie babys as in ugly babys. I knew they were called this before but no one here had pigeons at the time so there was no need for the uggie name.
When they get bigger they are called squeekers because they do that alot and it also can mean they are almost ready to leave the nest.
If the parents allow it this stage can be lenghthy i remove mine when i know they are eating on their own.

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

You're all being very patient and I appreciate that... =0)
And it may be a sign of my mental capacity, but I think silkie's squeaker is kinda cute...

So this is pigeon world-wide, the uggie baby thing? You didn't just make it up here?

it's not that I don't think pidgin babies aren't ugly, I just don't think they are any uglier than wet chicken hatchlings, which really do remind me of something the cat acked up...

Jay

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

See, I really don't think they're ugly. To me, all babies are incredibly cute. Except human babies, can't stand human babies. Ugh. But animal babies, all cute. Very cute. Even funky looking pigeon babies. I mean, I see how you could think they have an ugly element to them, but it's such a cute kind of ugly.

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

Mostly I'd agree with you, especially the human babies... they don't get cute until they're out of diapers... LOL

I guess I'm just a furry mammal sort of person... well, chicks are cute once they fluff up. Then they're V. Cute. But when they're fresh out of the egg?

A wet baby donkey will send me into a swoon. And as far as I'm concerned, there is nothing in the world as cute as a goat kid. My jaw drops in awe of it's cuteness.

But really, is uggie the official pidgin-world technical term for this stage? Or just DG?

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

lol, i love my pigeons and honestly i think they r gorgous even the baby in the pic when she was born and as it grows. i don't think any of them r ugly but alot people do. i think actually we started calling them that here for fun. on the pigeon forums anykind of pigeon raised for meat they call squabs. if they r pets then babies r called squeakers, that's all they do is squeak when they want something.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Claire, what ever do you mean human babies are not cute?
hehehe

Thumbnail by sewincircle
Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Jay, to be honest, I don't know if Uggie is a DG term or broader term. I suspect it is primarily a DG term.

Sewincircle....careful, or I will have to run screaming...

Clarkson, KY

Human babies are cute because they behave honestly the way their parents try not to behave. Many a baby has outed a parent -it's a service to society. And an object lesson. What're you so afraid of Moxy??

(Zone 7b)

Nope wrong on both counts uggie is what "some" others call their pigeon babys it's not exclusive to Daves.
Human Babys are Beautiful mine both were Beautiful when they were born and i take offense for anyone to say any precious child is ugly.
They are Gods very gift to us and i for one am offended by the comment!

Clarkson, KY

Aww Har -many of God's Greatest Gifts really make us examine life...

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

Har,
Why do we all have to like the same thing? And why do you leap to the conclusion that I don't think life is precious just because I don't think it's cute? Seems rather extreme to me.
Jay

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

the second pigeon egg did not develop. She kicked it out of the nest today and it had a little hole and I opened it and it was mostly yolk and a little red spot, so nothing going on in there.

The first baby is doing just fine.

Sorry if I offended you Harmony - it's just the way I feel. I don't like kids - never have - and I especially don't like babies. I avoid them whenever possible. But we are allowed to be different in our opinions, so it's OK. It all depends on your viewpoint - I see them as something a person chooses to have, or not, and I can assure you that if I ever had one (which I wouldn't), it would definitely not be a gift for me! But when a person actually wants one, then they are sure to be viewed as a gift.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I love my kids dearly.. and I don't regret anything.. I asked for a brown eyed girl and got Krystal.. I wanted to get pregnant to have Cody.. and got exactly what I wanted.. (brown eyed boy) They are a true blessing to me in every way.

BUT....

I'm so done with kids.. I don't even want grandkids... at least not in the next 5 or 10 years.. LOL Maby I'm horrible.. but I need "me" time now...

Congrats on the uggiez Moxy!! I'm happy for you!

Sapello, NM(Zone 5b)

Glad to hear the one uggie is doing so well! Congrats...

Yeah, I say those who go all gooey at the sight of a baby should have them and those of us that don't, shouldn't. It works out in the long run...

A friend was just telling me that one of the so-called benefits of C-sections that's pushed is that the baby looks better, not all red and scrunched looking. Now, maybe I'll offend somebody else saying this, but that seem's a pretty poor reason to have major surgery.

Apparently just livin' my life being as offensive as possible...
Jay

(Zone 7b)

I kinda have a problem i told silkie about with my pigeon babys. One has grew larger than the other and pushed the small one from the nest.
I put him back but i will have to watch them closely as the big one can starve the little one to death.
If i have too i will add another nest to put the little one in and the parents will feed both.

I thought i would put this here as it is important to know this can happen and how to deal with it.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Oh no, poor little thing! I hope he will continue to develop. I'm glad mine only has 1 this time so that that won't happen for me on this first time. Can you give him extra food in an eye dropper or something?
