Garden Photos - Part 48

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I have a baffle.

The only baffle I know is in a muffler. This place is acting weird today. A bit ago every link I clicked on another window opened up one after the other.

I used to put those wire cages out with the suet squares in them. Used chains, wires to hang them. Still they would be gone cage and all the next day. Finally caught the thief, a wild eyed squirrel dragging one from the tree all through the garden to a spot he figured was safe to munch the suet at his leisure. Must have taken him hours to chew through the chain. Later found a couple other empty cages in the woods just in back of the stone wall.

I had the little chain on mine too I have NO IDEA what happened to it, so I actually took the cage and just hooked it thru the cage onto the shepherd's hook.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I get chickadees, yellow and purple finch, titmouse, bluejays, nuthatch, and woodpeckers all with this one wreath.

Bill, your kerria sounds to be a happy plant! good luck getting rid of all the extra sprouts. Somebody should take them!! Flore Plena is a pretty one. They need to come up with a dwarf version though!

You folks's birds are very well taken care of! they're cute.

Prettiful birdies Pixie.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Cute little birdies but that wouldn't last five seconds around here without barbed wire and a moat and you would probably need an armed guard too.

Thomaston, CT

Can't put suet out, either---squirrels get it all! One March, the bear got it. I've been feeding a hull-less mixture with a lot of nuts in it---the woodpeckers & jays love it. My favorite is the red-bellied---no one messes with him!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Maybe I'll take you up on that offer for Kerria, Bill, if I remember when spring arrives. Will give me a chance to see your place as well.

I have a squirrel proof suet feeder, and it works great. Squirrels can't get into it at all. Also have a regular squirrel proof feeder, and it's kept the squirrels out as well.

Karen

Here is a picture of the regular one, though I don't have a pic of the suet one.

Last week I took pics of a friend's holly, Ilex verticilata. Here they are.

Are these bushes protected in the wild by law? I have often seen bushes get denuded by people taking the branches to use in arrangements for the holidays. They are long-lasting berries. It's a shame to see this happen to the wild bushes, though. Some people just don't care.

oooooo, squirrel proof suet feeder....gotta get me one!

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

I love the Holly bush Karen. What a sight this time of year.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Love those holly bushes. Had some here but the deer kept at them so dug them up and gave to DinL. At least there they can grow.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Never heard them called 'Holly' before..we always just called them 'Winterberry'. Anways, they are all over the place here so im guessing they are easy to grow. The birds have planted several along the side of the road and seem to have surrounded the lake. lol

They are deciduous hollies - Ilex verticillata.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Wha, love that iced azalea photo.

Nutfordaylily. I am a fan of Ilex verticillata too. We have some indigenous ones on the property, but not where they are seen from the house. So after reading a very informative thread from Viburnum Valley, I am determined to finally add an army of them to our yard. Well, maybe a platoon. They have been on my list for a couple of years. I hope to have what VV calls a "Winterberry Wonderland" in a few seasons. I will have to start with small ones, though I may "salt" the stand with a couple of specimen ones for instant gratification. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/933981/

The birds will love us. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I have two females and a male. The birds don't leave the berries for long!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i have two females and a male as well - only mine went in this fall no berries yet.

South Hamilton, MA

In MA it is now illegal to gather plant branches etc without owners permission. I prefer the wild winterberry to the 'domestic' one but both are pretty.

Thomaston, CT

Love the berries this time of year---any color is appreciated! The view from the window is very boring right now, but yesterday, the ride home from the farm was breathtaking---the ice was still on the trees, with the bright sun & blue sky---looked like a crystal village!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Here's my "bridge to nowhere"! When dh put it together he said he'd put it in the barn every winter to protect it (it's only 4' long), but . . . actually, I'm glad he didn't - it's pretty in the snow!

Wow if you stand on your tippe toes can you see Russia ???

How did you know, Sherrie?

Not far from your house

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Love your bridge to nowhere Sue. I need one to go across a drainage ditch. Maybe this year. The snow doesn't seem to bother kids, I used to like it too, then I grew up. Now it is pretty to look at but mostly just a big fat pain in the a$$. :)
LOL Sherrie. Watch out for the moose too!

First try with my new infrared filter. Will take some playing (and probably having to finally get Photoshop) with to get to look the way I want. My photo program only has basic abilities.

COOOL BEANS!!! Victor.

It looks like it should be a winter postcard.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Love the 'filtered' look, Victor.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks all. Hopefully I'll be able to refine the process and make it better.
