Oh yes, I knew that when I got married, but my mother was EXTREMELY concerned. Again, you grow up in northeastern MA, seriously everything south of Hartford is just unexplored territory. Apparently when you get close to the M-D line, some quality of southerness (like grits, maybe) can ooze over. My DH still gets annoyed about it: "D*** it", he says, "Our family names are on the Gettysburg monument! We DIED for the Union!" Tee hee.

If you are a die hard Red Sox fan, you fully understand how every single one of those A's, G's, and H's was necessary.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

My screen, too. How come?

HMMM. Let me guess - the Red Sox lost that game? I'm not a baseball fan, but my mom likes the Mets, does that count?

No clue. No they didnt loose! That was just a pre- season warm up. That was Victor trying to make the team!

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

pk i gotta ..speak, talk about accents. My Mom now 70 something was born and raised in the hills or should I say" fighten grounds" my mothers words not mine of Morgantown WV. She had lived in Maine most of her grown up life heck all of it she was 21 when she got here. She still has an accent that you wonder about. Talk about park the car get it from my Mom.
You are all great.I did'nt say yawlll.

O.M.G.
Did the Red Sox lose.
I can't bear to tell the tale...but check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Buckner for a summary.
Victor is a cruel, cruel dude.

So far we were only here alittle time in the summer....but yall dont need to water like we do in the South. That is one of the hardest parts of gardening to me. With 105 degree summer days with NO rain in a month .......it is almost impossible to justify watering when lakes are drying up. And the cold is cold enough to kill off alot of buggies......plus in July and August [the only two months I have been here] it was nice and cool not really what I would call hot.

Also the foliage in the fall........we hardly ever saw such vibrant colors. That is exciting.

And just the newness of it is exciting. Moving from 7b to 6a is a pretty big difference. :)

Carson City, NV(Zone 6b)

Hee Hee! You guys are funny.

From our perspective, anything east of the Mississippi River is a weird place where people talk funny and the states are the size of counties ☺

as side note: Pam, my favorite container for starting seeds are plastic shoeboxes. They're a good size for pulling to check on seedlings, bugs, moisture etc. If your shelf liners are too big they get a bit unwieldly.

Atkinson, NH(Zone 5a)

My Screen is not right also, must have some thing to do with daves garden program.

Tried shutting down and coming back up then logging in but did not change things.

Wide screen kind of annoying but any reference to the "Y" team from NYC has that effect on anyone from Ma. I can say all those towns just fine but the tonic thing sounds like RI to me. In the outer reaches of Ma we say soda. A milkshake has no ice cream in it but a frappe does. Any kind of "chowda" is good as long as its white and Conn. is the south, not dixie but the south. The whole thrill of snow wears off faster every year until just one flake makes you groan out loud. Love the Toys Us line. The old one that we sent all our Rs to the mid-west is still a pretty good excuse too. Oh and the Sox never lose they are just warming up for the next year. Anyway any time they finish ahead of the "Y" team (happening a lot lately hehe) is a good year.

Heny
105??? Yikes, where were you???
I've only lived here 6 years, but the weather seems to be reasonably moderate...rain in the summer tends to come and go...some years are drier than others. August is often dry, although last summer it rained nonstop in June and July--I didn't have to water at all then. Because we are up in the mountains even the hot summer days usually cool off at night...and "hot" to me means "over 90" :). And the winter does kill off the worst of the bugs...thank goodness. When I was 21 I moved to SC and encountered palmetto bugs for the first time. Flying around my apartment. Into my hair. That still give me nightmares. That and the 1986 World Series.

Yes, isn't the foliage gorgeous??? Take 79 through the mountains, it's beautiful.

How is your soil up there in Motown? It's pretty much pure clay around here, but there's some places to get compost etc (dmail me if you want any local info :)).

Oh no, I hope I didn't screw up everyone's computer with the AAGGHH etc. Here, I'll go back and edit it...

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Only happening on this thread. I have seen this on other forums, don't know how they fix it though.

It might be the one with the AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGG

Fixed :-) No spaces is what must of done it.

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

Katlian, good idea about plastic shoeboxes. You mean the type you can pick up at discount stores?

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

Oh good, glad that fixed it. Sorry everybody!!!!!!!! I had NO idea that would do that!!! (I have a wide screen so it didn't happen to me)

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I love snow, wish I got more here!!!!
Tonic is the other part of gin and.......
No idea what a bubbler or a packy is.

It's even a different world in southern NJ....we were on a bike run and went to a little luncheonette, I asked for a chocolate milkshake, they said they didn't have chocolate(I was confused since they sold chocolate ice cream) so I asked for vanilla...didn't have that either....ok what do you have???
Brown, white or pink!!!!!!!!!

I was brought up a milkshake had icecream.

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

Answers to the quiz will be available after I go pick up the boy at daycare. :)

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

LOL, jen. Brown, white or pink. Where was that? So, I don't stumble upon it sometime.

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

I certainly wouldn't want to stumble upon something brown, white, and pink.

heh heh

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

EEWWW!

What about something brown, white OR pink

Morgantown, WV(Zone 6a)

We were in Tuscaloosa, AL.....basically central AL. There are days with 100% humidity but NO RAIN and you walk outside and are soaking wet from sweat [well the men are Southern Ladies dont sweat we Glisten] before you get to your car. Seriously hot.

The real seasons are just fascinating to me.

Only birds dont seem to like my feeders........wonder if 'northern' birds are different! :)

I know we have alot of rock in our yard. We stripped the top off [it was all weed/grass] when we moved in and graded the yard then added some fill dirt [actually 20 dumptruck loads] but I havent tested it. I assume clay but not red clay like I am used to more like hard rock clay. With the fill dirt it should have given us some easier to work with dirt though. We will see.

The house was new construction and apparently the builder didnt 'think' to do ANYTHING to the yard.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Never heard that, Jen.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Lucille's on rt539 it's listed in Barnegat.... alll I know we were deep into the pineys.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I never heard that either and I'm thinking that if someone asks for a chocolate shake you should know well enough that they mean "brown" ice cream. iyiyi (how do you spell it?)

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Well bubbler and packy I know. What else would you call them is what I'm trying to figure out. I don't think I want anything to eat that is just referred to as brown either.

Morgantown, WV(Zone 6a)

I have no earthly idea what any of the words are.......what is bubbler and packy? Heck what are any of them? :O

great composting article if you aint read it.

OK I know you're all just bursting with curiosity...or something...

* Tonic: Any sweetened carbonated beverage like Coke, Pepsi, ginger ale, etc. "Tonic water" (that you have with gin) is called tonic water, of course. :) Term seems to be restricted within the rt 128 loop (don't know about RI :)).
* Bubbler: Water fountain that you drink out of. In eastern MA, "water fountains" are found in parks. When I was growing up, if you called a "bubbler" a "water fountain" the other kids called you a name that called your sexual orientation into question, if you know what I mean.
* Packy: Package store, i.e. liquor store.
* Frappe: A thick blend of milk and ice cream. An "ice cream soda" has flavored soda water with a scoop of ice cream floating on top.

Pronounce the following town names:
* Gloucester: GLOS-tah
* Peabody: PEE-b'dy
* Woburn: WOO-bn
* Worcester: WIS-tah or WUS-tah

My sister used to live in Huntsville and you are so right, the heat there has an entirely different quality than it does in WV (or MA, for that matter :)). It seemed to *bonk* you over the head as soon as you walked outdoors, I never did get used to it (I have that thick viscous Yankee blood).

I seem to have kidnapped my own thread...a couple of times...eek...

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Yep yep yep. I think the Wus-tah version is the way to go. Oh ya so right on the bubbler thing.LOL In RI at least some parts they say tonic too. I think mostly transplants from the "North End" or "Dor-chestah" maybe or relatives. They call frappes cabinets I think too. I live close enough, about half way between Boston and Providence, to know what coffee syrup is for too. :)

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

We were in southern VA on the TN border and were eating at a restaurant and hubby ordered a seltzer, they didn't know what it was, club soda...no idea....bubbly water...oh the stuff we clean the tables with......lol

seltzer water they clean the grills with in restaurants.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

I did well with the towns 'cause DH is from Newton, MA, but flunked the rest. I guessed a "bubbler" was a bidet. lol DH knew everything except the "packy". He left New England when he was eight and didn't start drinking until he was ten (just kidding).

I thought a cellar, which DH used to call a "cella" before he shifted boundary matrices, was a dirt floor basement, as in "root cella"). I always thought the idea of storing roots (which are "ruts" down here) in the "cella" was intriguing. Mice and mold could be a few of our challenges. My FIL was very fond of "seltza" while my dad, a Bronx boy, still asks for "2 cents plain". He's ninety.
Laurel

Fairmont, WV(Zone 6a)

Eek, a bidet? Yikes :)

Hm, we called any basement a cella...although maybe it's a holdover from when all basements were in fact dirt.

2 cents' plain, that's cool. :)
