Farewell Hummers

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Yesterday was the last day I got to enjoy my Hummingbird friends for another year.My two feeders look so lonely without all the buzzing and fighting over who is the king of the feeder. They are now on their long journey to their winter grounds. We enjoyed watching them so much this summer that it will be a very lonely place without them.
Have a safe journey little Hummers and I'll see you next year.

I still have hummers around here. Just had 4 of the little creatures flying around the feeders and DH while he was out working yesterday in the yard. I guess they are making their way further south but they are still around yet this morning. This is my first year having hummers so have no idea just how long they will last in my area. We still will be having some warm temperatures even tho it is a bit cooler now with all the rain that we have been having. We have one hummer that is very protective of the feeder that I have in the back yard that I can see from my kitchen window. Even had a bee eating out of the feeder yesterday but didn't seem to bother the hummer any, for he or she just kept eating away until another hummer got too close then would chase him away. Really comical to watch.

The hummers are still here, but I don't know for how long. I'll mark the date of your post and see how long it is before they leave here.

We had one looking in the window last night, checking to see if WE are still here, I guess. Not that we're going anywhere. I don't do feeders, just keep flowers blooming as much of the season as possible. We seem to have as many as people with multiple feeders, and I don't have worry about forgetting to clean or change the juice. I will be watching to see if they are still around this week.

I still have them here. How do you know when they leave... other than not seeing them? Are they on a strict schedule? What about the monarchs? When do they leave? I just noticed a caterpillar on my milkweed. He’d better hurry up and grow his wings.

Silver Springs, NV(Zone 6b)

Don't have any feeders, but have had hummingbirds still busy in the hollyhocks this week.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

I still have dozens of hummers and Monarchs and Swallowtails. In this part of North Texas, they generally stay around until the middle of October. But, since this has been a much wetter spring and fall than we've had in a long time, that might curtail them some too.

It's turned cool here and this morning
noticed more hummers than normal. They feed
heavy before departing south for the winter'
I also counted another 4 species this morn,
but I always leave my feeders out in case
there are some slow pokes and don't bring
them in until we have to light the furnaces'
More butterflies than ever before too this
year and they also have"butterfly bars"I
create for them,lol'''

To all: My local bird store person tells me there is a new strain (?) of hummers migrating through the US this year, and we may see some until as late as January. DON'T put those feeders away until you haven't seen any hummers for at least a week. They need us! (Right now, many are mating, and away from the feeders.)

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

I live near darius and the usual deadline for the ruby-throated hummingbird leaving this area is September 15. However, cool weather has been later in coming the last 2 or 3 years and they stayed a bit longer. They usually return on April 15, easing the IRS crunch somewhat.
We've been told for years that the only hummer in this area is the ruby-throated but we are seeing more species now.

Don't know if that new strain of Hummingbird will make it this far north but I will certainly keep my eyes open for it next year. Poppysue, you know when the hummers are gone when all the buzzing activity is gone from your yard and it's quiet sitting outside. Tooooooo quiet.I usually keep my feeders up for another two weeks in case a straggler flies thru.I don't know about anyone else but I get kind of depressed when they are gone.Just a reminder that winter and cold weather is not far away.
MzM, I put a sign up in my yard with directions to your house for any stragglers that might come thru. Told them there was a nice dinner waiting for them when they get to Florida. LOL

Agawam, MA

Oh, I don't want to think about them leaving already! Guess it's getting to be that time, I'll enjoy them while I can. Here's info about migration http://portalproductions.com/h/migrate.htm
