Fireside chat... Part 3 ... toasting our toes!

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

I can see where you see corgi, especially in the ears. Does she have a tail? Our Gomer didn't.

Maddie is and mom almost is Karen. I hate asparagus. Yuk. I prefer green beans, crowder peas, pinto beans, corn, black eyed peas and spinach. I love spinach. Brussel Sprouts make we want to gag. I'm not a big veggie person unfortunately.

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL, Brussel sprouts make me wanna gag too. I love fresh peas and tomotoes, turnip and collard greens but not cooked spinach. Spinach salad is good. So glad Maddie and mom are doing better.

Podster my Grandmammy had a small asparagus plot in an old tractor tire when I was little but I don't remember eating it ....I bought Jersey Supreme variety and am looking forward to it. Boy I can tell already I haven't worked in the yard in awhile, I've gotten out of shape during the winter. Going to soak these old bones in a hot steaming bath now. nite all!

Hi TJ, good to hear from you again. I am sure looking forward to those smiling faces and hugs this spring too. I miss my friends, my butterflies, and my gardening. Dave's is the best medicine for the winter blues though. At least someone one on here is having warm weather, or planning a spring garden to help forget the winter weather here.

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

Good late morning everyone. It was much warmer than predicted last night. Our low was 44° and that is what it was when I went to bed at 11pm. When we got up at 7am today it was 46°. So the southerly winds definately kicked in. What a relief. No heater on in the GH or workshop.

I like tomatoes, and turnips if the turnips are cooked in a stew or soup. Oh I forgot to mention okra. I love fried okra and fried green tomatoes.

I've had a busy morning. Started my 8# pork shoulder roast early so that it can cook all day. Then I decided that I wasn't going to pine any more about those $4.99 Tiffany roses that I picked up at Randall's (a Safeway store) this past week but I was going to do something about it. They are so beautiful and fragrant and the flower is so perfect so......to make a long story short I went back to Randall's and bought the last two of those they had and then went to another Randall's and bought 3 more! So I have a rose bed when I get ready to put them in. Actually I have a couple of places to put them so I will group them in the 2 places. Then while I was there I decided to get Jim a sweet potato for dinner to go w/the pork. I put that in the oven and let it cook all day @180-200° and it comes out so well done and sweet. sweet. sweet. All he has to do is put a bit of butter and S&P and he's in heaven. Ah, sometimes life is good! Another front due tomorrow and it will likely be windy and "cool" and maybe some rain all next week but for today everythings just jim-dandy.

Well I was right on target with my prediction for nameless to have her calf. I said noon to evening yesterday and it was 4:30 p.m. It was a bull calf. I think this evening will be "Skinny" giving us another calf. DH always doubts my predictions, but I am pretty lucky with them so far. Man, I do love this life!! Those little calves playing in the pasture is so cute to watch. On cold days they really kick up their heels. DH says it is natures way of keeping them warm and working their growing muscles.

YesterdayI got two tractor tires filled with strawberries, but DH would not let me have one of his barrels for the other batch of them. I got one bed of potatoes planted and had a little space left at the end of that bed. I wonder what I should plant in that space? I have heard that tomatoes and potatoes go well. I have room for a tomato bush there. Any ideas on that?

Do we have a date yet for the April RUs? I am so ready to see everyone again. I hope we have a break between the CS one and the Tyler/Jacksonville one and the FW one.
I am going to have one in 2010 and skip this year. I have shade trees growing everywhere and I am getting a roof across the front of my mobile home, so we will be cooler then if we have it during the heat. Also, I want to make plans for a daylong event. I would even love to have some overnighters to stay and we could really have a visit then.

I have been keeping an eye out for a weeping willow for you TJ, but so far no luck. Did you ever get the one you were wanting? I have seen them for sale online, but none growing that I could dig for you. There are plenty of the regular ones, but the weepers are not as plentiful.

Well DH is home from the auction and I am ready to ride out to check on "Skinny" to see if she has had her calf.

Stay warm and dream of spring.

I've been busy too, but not cooking (I love pork and sweet potatoes) or calving (I know they are cute) but sowing seeds into pots. Some for me and some for the Spring RU whenever that is. I would like to have some pretty good sized seedlings to share.

I found little round black bugs on my egg tree which overnights in the workshop with the brugs. I have them all outside today and brought out the bigger brug cuttings from the house to acclimate to the cooler weather. They all were together. I could have croaked. First time I've had a bug problem. I sprayed everybody with NEEM oil just in case the buggers got onto my "virgin" brugs.

We are 64° right now and cloudy. It has been good to be outside today playing with pots, seeds and dirt. Oh come sweet Spring....

Charlene, Karen d-mailed me asking about what time I might like to have a Spring RU. Apparently there are a few folks who are already trying to plan one. I think June is too late. I'd rather see late April maybe. Maybe you could d-mail her and see what she knows.

Waxahachie, TX(Zone 8a)

At my Mom's house on her PC.

Josephine, thanks and good luck with your cuttings.

ChristiLou, I totally agree with you on the media! Don't get me started!

Pod, I do feel blessed that I'm in an industry that is not over-regulated by the government, and with a company which takes good care of their employees.

Sheila, yes DG is great medicine for the winter blues!

Charlene, still haven't gotten a weeping willow. I'll probably have to breakdown and buy one. Thanks for looking!

If any of y'all would like to organize another RU sometime in April, I can reserve a pavillion at Getzendaner Park (same place as last year) in Waxahachie again. I won't have time to organize it. Just let me know and I'll make the phone call.

Whew! it is warm again ~ what will tomorrow bring?

Charlene ~ did Skinny deliver? Glad the weather is more moderate for the calving season.

Texasgrower ~ sorry I missed answering your question last night. Yes, that little girlie has a tale. It is about 4 inches long with a cute white tip. Don't know what her Mama was but her Daddy was a "traveling salesman"! LOL

Ann ~ pork roast, sweet potatoes and Tiffany roses... life is good!

Glad y'all had a nice day to enjoy. Looking forward to the weekend. Have a good one!

My day was good. I got a lot of work done on the garden fence. If all goes well I can finish it by the end of next week. Yesterday I bought four 100' rolls of 6' high welded wire fencing which I will start putting up tomorrow or Monday. Once the fence is finished my focus will shift to preparing raised beds, making a couple dirt rows, getting the straw bales started cooking, and filling the 5-gal grow bags with coir. After everything is ready for planting I can start on the drip irrigation system.

I planted way too many tomato seed in peat pellets. If all germinate I'll have plenty to trade or swap. Is that what you all do at RUs? Will there be one of these in San Antonio, Austin or any nearby town?

Here you can see a tomato emerging after just 3 days. I planted these Wednesday afternoon.

Last day at Market today. Used to sleeping in and have been there by 7 AM everyday. Riding in with my sister today and am waiting for her. We are encouraged by the turnout.
Due to the over all world economy the "powers that be" were thinking it would be a very light attendance and did not have as many extras come in to work. Well...they are working us to death. Hallelujah!!! I say it is a building filled with optimist, both buyers and sellers. Still believe if the media would just shut up, we, as citizens of the greatest country in the world would right ourselves.

The next two days are truly ones to celebrate. Without Dr. Martin Luther King, doubtful we would have a Barack Obama. We shall overcome...

Pod, Skinny waited until after dark, but she did calve as expected.

I look forward to Obama with great anticipation and hope. I fear for his life due to the crazies of the world. I will be praying for his leadership and his safety.

It looks like today is going to be sunny and warm. I am looking forward to enjoying it.

If we come together as a people again as we were in the past, anything might be possible. I don't mind the media talking about the economy...as long as the press is free and the people are free, that's what is most important to me.
Beautiful day today, and yesterday I picked up some pansies and petunias, because after all the freezes, the blooms are just about gone. Still have a few butterflies and they need nectar!

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

texasrockgarden to answer your question yes that is what we do with extras is use them at RU's for trades...umm as for where and when I know college station is talking about one and Houston has one not sure on Austin and there will be one around Dallas Area and one in East Texas by Jacksonville

Low 30°s this a.m. I am still feeding the fire...

Sorry but this thread is getting a bit slow in east TX.

Would anyone care to join us over here? http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/944693/

Bring your coffee cup....

It's very nice crisp 45º out this morning.

Here is a picture of my tomatoes that were seeded last Wednesday afternoon. They are coming right along. Any days above 65º they are going outside so they don't get too spindly.

I have decided to utilize a drip irrigation system this year. Here is my start. Having never done the drip thing before I wanted to sort of know what to expect so I used my little bed of onions, shallots, and garlic as a learning center or test plot. This little system was installed Saturday and to my amazement it works really well.

I think I will like the idea that when I water plants this year I will not be watering all the weeds and grasses located in the walkways and along the fence. Hoeing just kills my back.

Here is a pic of the irrigated onion patch taken a few minutes ago.

Very nice Jerry.

Because my back was a little sore from working on the fence Saturday and Sunday, I took yesterday off to recuperate.

Here is a picture of the fence I took a little ago that shows the extensions on the T-posts, the three support wires and a roll of 2" x 4" x 6' welded wire mesh fencing.

Today is the day to start putting up wire mesh. Although I took yesterday off I still plan to be finished with the wire mesh before Monday.

Josephine, is there a date set yet for the FW RU?
Also does anyone know if a date is set for Jacksonville?
Charlene

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

We haven't talked about it yet but it looks like things are getting underway.
T.J. said he could have one again in Waxahachie, but he can't organize it because he is too busy.
I am waiting to see when the plant sales that I must be at around here are going to be, so I can have an idea, so things are still up in the air.
Josephine.
