Last summer Skippy, who is not as big as your son's dog, knocked my legs right out from under me and just kept going. I landed squarely on my butt. Glad for the bit of extra padding there, but it did a number on my hand. I landed on gravel. Lots of nasty open skin. But it heals quickly. You'll heal quickly, too. just take care of it. These dogs don't know their strength.
Laurie's Garden Tour
Tills if you are still hurting on Monday you need to see a doctor. Promise us.
Tills - go tot he doctor as soon as you can. I suppose it is of no use to tell you to cancel any plant business and go on Monday.............has the pain gotten worse since it happened?
Portland, I can tell you that to cancel a trip to Heidi's place one must know that the leg is actually broken. Or the pain needs to be uncontrollable. But I agree that she should go to the doctor immediately, if not sooner.
Tills, Portland is a nurse. Plus she is a mother. And I mean a serious one! Many, many children! You better mind her!
Truth is I still have a California RN license but have not worked as a nurse since getting an architecture degree in 1992. But it seems like once a nurse always a nurse!
Tills there might be something going with the leg that walking around may make worse. And yes I know Monday is about plants & seeds and such but do consider it. How many days ago did this happen?
Well, we can only suggest that Tills take care of her leg sooner but I understand if she has seeds on her mind!
I have spent several hours today reading (mostly looking at pictures) a book by Little & Lewis about their gardens. Pix have you seen this book? It reminds me of the new area you are planning. What a fun book!
I'm thinking that we should plan a trip in the Big Bus down to Cabo San Lucas to see their new studio - that is after we visit Laurie in Burwash Wealt. :-)
Cabo San Lucas is a good first outing for the bus, just get its wings in trim, the sails set.
Portland - the best way to get through to Tills, I find, is send a d-mail. She really does pay close attention then.
Tills, could you not do both the doctor and Heidi's in one day? Get in to Dr. first thing in the morning and then over to Heidi's when the dr. says (shrug) 'Stay off of it'.
Wait a minute! you guys, You missed what I said. On limping, I should of made it more clear, I'm a Dis. My hurt leg is fine just black and blue, but the frist 2 days at work made my hip hurt on the other side by favoring the hurt one. Alls well I did a 10 hour shift today with very little pain. 7 to 14 days with a bad bruse healing time. I have a number thu work that I can call and talk to a RN for any type injury. She asked me a lot of Qs and what to look for and watch for. Its healing just ugly. I brused the bone and the tendons along the shin bone on the right leg. Its the left that hurts, She also said that a whiplash effect could happen from the collision to the rest of my body. It did and I feel better now.
And Pixs is right, it will have to be broken and in a cast to my armpits before I would miss on a trip to Heidis to see my friends and get plants. NO I take that back
DH will have to lay me in the back of the truck and take me. LOL
Love ya Tills! See you tomorrow, hopefully w/o a fully body cast :0) Glad to hear that your feeling better.
Thanks Rach, I'm fine.
Can't wait to see you.
Hugs
Tills - perhaps you should be drawing cartoons for gardening magazines....
Okay - okay, you're fine. But I do like the image of a Tills, in body cast going to the nursery, and then being wheeled around on one of those trolleys they use for feed bags, shouting "wait wait, to the left, hellebores to the left, back up, get over to the ......." and poor DH just sheeshing all the way. Bet he'll hope for rain!
No rain, there's sun! I'm not going to Heidi's, too bad for me : ( I've got other commitments today, but I'm happy for the others.
Laurie the image you create of Tills on a trolley is pretty humorous. Maybe we should make a calendar with gardening cartoons for each month and sell them!
Tills...so glad your leg is better. And I read on the other thread you're teaching that pup some manners, good! Laurie's picture of you having DH roll you around on the trolley in the nursery had me LOL! But I could see that happening too, you would let a little thing like a body cast make you miss an event like that.
Pix..I don't like most of the newer cartoons, don't find them funny.
I have always puzzled over that statement, Pix - if all great minds do think alike, wouldn't we fail to progress? Sorry, tad existential - but I do like the spotted hellebore, and i do like the old cartoons.
If all great minds think alike there would still be the problem of those 'not so great' minds, which actually describes what is going on in Wash DC.
Some of those old cartoons are a little violent, like when Roadrunner was struck by a train and flattened on the tracks. I had nightmares of that cartoon. Hey - remember the Beatles song that went something like "I'd rather see you dead little girl than to be with another man...." - a song I liked as a teen but never thought too much about the lyrics! i think it was called Run for Your Life. Geeezzzz
I like that witch hazel! It will be beautiful no matter where you put it. Is that a location you can see from a window so you can gaze at the pretty fall color?
Portland, you got nightmares from Roadrunner?? Aren't you the same Portland who watches CNN? Hmmmm,......:)
Tills, I'd say look around and see what is blooming at your place right now that would go well with that witch hazel. It's going to be green in the summer. You might want some other low growing shrubs that have great fall color. Spirea 'Ogon' comes to mind. It has a narrow leaf like a willow, and brilliant orange color in the fall. Would look great next to that Witch hazel. You could clip it to stay small, since the hazel is slow growing.
http://hayefield.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/spiraea-dg-mc-gm-ogon-06-07.jpg 'Ogon' is on the bottom row of photos.
Forgot to say that since the hazel is 'all leg' just now, you might consider some ornamental grasses underneath it. Something 'mounding' in habit that stays on the smaller size. There is a Miscanthus sinensis variety that stays small and is nice, or if that place gets plenty of water, you could do a new zealand sedge in the brown shades. That would look nice with the color of the hazel, regardless of which season. Then your purple heucheras could go toward the front. That would be an awesome combination!

Ah, the signs of spring! The first photo is Sweet Woodruff, a very nice groundcover with small white flowers. This time of year I like to give mine a 'haircut'. I lift up the loose strands and cut them off at the base, close to the soil. You'll see the new little leaves coming up. This gives it a nice fresh look for spring.
The second one I recognize but cannot recall the name. Maybe someone else will do so.
The third one looks like nice daffodils to me. Wait until they bloom, then if you want to divide them, you can dig up the clump, but leave the leaves on the bulbs. Don't cut off the growth. You need to wait until the top growth is yellow, then you can remove it.
Thanks Pix! I thought the first one was a weed but I am happy that it's not & tomorrow it will get a haircut.
That will be one crowded clump of daffodils! When the lilac gets leaves they will get no sun. :-(
I wish my daffs would multiply like that. I lost a lot this year, not nearly as many coming up.
Just got a request from Sofer to start a new thread. I'm just going to set that up.
I've moved us to here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/954054/

the second plant is one of the vinca's - I suspect vinca minor - and chop it back much further than 12" if you want to grow something else there - that is a real grower. I'm not sure about giving woodruff a hair cut - its not usually cut down - having said that, I know it used to be used as a strewing (not stewing) herb. It was put under carpets and matting to discourage bugs in the house. when bruised (or trod on when dry) it smells of cut hay. So that seems to suggest that cutting is okay. don't forget that it does have small white blossom in spring - so you may want to cut after blossom.
I don't worry about moving daffodils too much - if they haven't budded out yet, I'd say go ahead and divide and move them, just try to get them buried deep again. I find it is almost impossible to kill off daffs - the area in the wild garden where I have put 12"-15" of soil on top has daffs coming up through it! I often move them even in flower and they never seem to notice.
I have some of that vinca vine. I always had it in hanging baskets and thought HMMM.. I'll just root some so I don't have to buy any more. Well, I certainly don't have to buy any ever again. LOL.. I have pulled out a LOT. I do like it though and it has a pretty flower, but if you don't want it somewhere rip it out, don't just cut back, cuz it will grow back very well. You will find all kinds of runners everywhere.
I love daffodils.
How exciting to see all the stuff coming up in your garden, Judi.!!
Jan - you are absolutely right - dig out/rip out/remove where you don't want it - Vinca is another of those tough tough plants, that look oh so delicate.
Tills - I'd love to add in on where to put the witch hazel, but after Pix's very clear instructions (and lovely combinations), is there anything left to add? Is this one of the scented ones? If it is, it will have stronger scent in a sunnier position - the warmth of the winter sun brings out the perfume.
