help sick chicken

Bridgewater, ME

My 8 month old pullit seems to not be able to stand on her leg,and when she tries her toes go under her and she can`t put any weight on it,she is the one that I made a coat for because she lost all the feathers on her back which I blamed the rooster cause he won`y stay off her.I brought her in and put her new coat on and put her in a big dog kennel with water and food, she is eating and laying, but I don`t want the other chickens pecking at her.She is by herself on our porch with lots of straw in her kennel.they have not been pecking at her but I don`t want to take a chance that they will and my coop is so small that she has no place to go to get away from them if they start.I looked at her foot and leg and can`t firnd anything wrong. Will it tramatise her more not to be with her flock mates?IThey ate her other coat that I made for her a few weeks ago,I put it on her one afternoon and keep checking on her and she had it on and no one was bothering her and the next morning I went out to get the eggs and the coat was missing and not a shred was found so they must have ate it.So I keep them in out of the cold, because you can`t put them out and not her.My other chickens look and act ok.I have been putting ACV in the water for a couple weeks now to keep there immunie system up its so cold and windy here. What could be wrong with her leg?green

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Can you look at the foot well? Do you see any bumps or cuts? Is it normal in color?
It wont hurt her to be seperate for a time to heal. It may do her good to be in a small enclosed area awhile if its a leg injury. I really dont have as much experience as most here. I will leave it up to the pros. I will be thinking of you green. I do indeed remember the hen and the coat! Those jealous chickens stole it! I just know it! I sure hope she will be okay! Keep me updated! Jeanmarie

Bridgewater, ME

Yes I checked it good and didn`t see anything and it looks like the other foot,I will post tomorow and let you know how she mad it through the night

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Thanks green. Is she putting any weight on it at all?
Does it look like she could have pulled a muscle or something? You know how when we hurt our ankle or something we limp or favor that sore part? Is that what she is doing?
I will check with you again tomorrow!!! Okay? I do hope it is something that rest can heal.

Hi green: I'm just wondering as young as she is, and you said the rooster would not stay off of her. If that extra weight made her leg support to much and it went limp? I would leave her seperated for at least a week. Even if she puts her weight on it eventually she will still need some time to let it heal completely. Gook luck and yes do keep us posted. Haystack.

(Zone 7b)

Hey Green I agree with Haystack about the roo not staying off of her and could possibly have injured her leg. Sounds like you have a disorderly rooster you may want to think about replaceing him if he is overly abusive to the hens.
If your chickens are picking at each other you could have to many chickens for the size of your coop. Over crowding leads to picking and with no where to run the timid ones catch it the worst from both hens and the roo.

if it is that cold there it sounds to me like frostbite.

No frostbite I keep a heat lamp in there and I put one in the kennel for her,she is eating and pecking at me when I open her door, she is still limping will take her out again and look at her foot and leg again when I get home from church. The ones in the coop don`t peck at each other or her when she was in there with them, they have a big run and I let them out when the wind is not blowing and its not to cold. This has been a windy winter so far and we still have four months of cold left. The kennel is a big one my daughter had it for her rottwielier so she has a lot of room may just keep her in there untill her foot or leg gets better that way they can`t steal her coat.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

That is a good plan Green! I think you are right on with the kennel and everything. Yes, she will get to keep her little coat on as well. No jealous chickens to take it!!! I sure want to see her get better fast! Give her a hug from me. {{{HUGS}}}
Keep us up to date, after church. ;)

I have one hen in isolation right now, I noticed blood on the porch yesterday and went frantic thru the flock looking for bloody poop. no signs then i seen this hen hobbling, picked her up and seen where there was a scratch on one leg. Cleaned her up and will keep her in a separated for a while.

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

they can still have frostbite internal on toes and u will not notice it until the toes start to die off and turn black. don't matter how much heat or lights u have frostbite can still hit especially if there is enough moisture in the air trust me i have seen it many times in person with my own flock as well as others. so it is a possability i'd not rule out so quick. i've had hens with it on toes and not show it for a mth or 2 so it can take some time for it to show through. in all actuallity have heat lights makes them more ceptable with condensation in the coop and carrier from the lights.

if they r picking on her that bad it could be an injury also since she is on bottom of the peck order. keeping her issolated and with her warm coat is definately a good thing and yes she is where there is plenty of space for her. if u put her back in i'd give a few of them coats so they don't single her out and try treats that u can hang in the coop to keep em occupied if they don't have winter boardom it may help them to leave her alone more too. they can peck at the treats or if on floor bottom dig for them and peck at those it would keep them busy so they don't bother her. there has to be something wrong or she'd not be limping.
hope some of these things help,
silkie

Good Advice Ladies ^_^

Bridgewater, ME

Yes its all good advice!!.I took her out when i got home from church and she had some rice krispies and some peas to eat and I watched her walk, and her foot is not turning under like it was yesterday my dh picked her up so I could really check her out and her foot looks like it has a scratch in between her toes and her leg looks like it may be a little swollen, but she laid an egg today and she is eating and drinking and really liking her coat. She talkes to me when she is eating ,I think she likes her new home.I will keep an eye out for frostbite on the foot also.Yes I will hang something from the ceiling for them to peck at,they love cabbadge I`ll get a head tomorow and hang that up for them.I do put corn in the coop for them to scratch at I have deep pine shavings so that keeps them busy for awhile can`t wait for spring when my dh will build a new coop with lots of room for them.I am going to try to find a home for my rooster and get a smaller one in the spring. His mother is a barred rock and his father is a New Hampshire Red,he probably weights 5 lbs or more,he is not one bit aggresive to us and he guards his ladies really well but he has his favorites and the one in the kennel is one of them. She can`t be to stressed out or she wouldn`t be laying eggs right? Its so nice to get on here and talk about my chickens some peaple just look at me when I talk about them and especially when I told them I make her a coat.I was not going to join I was just going to get on and keep reading, but its not the same if you can`t join in.Thanks chicken friends!!!!

(Zone 7b)

OH we all have our chicken ways and welcome glad your here!!

So glad to know she is doing better!!

I'm glad you decided to get a new roo it's never good when a roo repeatedly mounts a hen. I've had roos like that and i just can't stand to see them belittle the hens like that.
IMHO if a roo is ripping out the feathers on a hens back then he is being to aggressive with his mateing.

I am so glad you did decide to join. It is a valuable place when you need help or just want to talk about chickens...or other things.
I sure am glad to hear she is not rolling her foot anymore. That is progress! I hope the progress continues and she is running the roost again. She sure sounds like a sweet girl!
Keep us posted!

(Zone 7b)

Lord knows we need all the help we can get so many questions and so little time "SIGH"

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

the hen I mentioned here, her foot is turning uggggggggggg green. I do not want to think what that could be. Maybe it could be her foot is a little swollen. She is NOT running a fever. Oh yea the scrape is on her leg about 2 inches up from her foot.

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

green is usually infection can u post pics??

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

i will have to take it with my cell phone camera is still in the shop. Will try to get a pic when it is light outside. The thing that throws me is it is ONLY a scrape, not even a cut. Weird.

Bridgewater, ME

She gave me another egg today, she seems a little better today let her to walk a bit and she is putting more preasure on her leg.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Oh that is very good news!
Keep up the good work!

Bridgewater, ME

No egg yesterday,I let her out while I cleaned her cage today and she was making her chicken nosies and the rooster and the hens were out and you should have heard him when her heard her and they talked back and forth for some time,I fest kind of bad for her I think she wants back with them but I really want her foot to heal up before I put her back and I really would like the rooster gone to,I have advertised for a home for him hope I hear soon.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

So she walked around some while you cleaned out the cage?
How did she walk? She is probably doing really well being out awhile.
It is so hard for them to be away. I was just told not to keep mine out too long, as they could loose their place in the order, and that can result in them picking at her. So as soon as she seems well enough, I guess you could put her back and see how it goes. She does sound like she is doing better and I am glad!!!

Bridgewater, ME

She is still limping but other that and having to wear the coat she seems fine I`ll give her a couple more days then put her back

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

I have a little girl inside now too. She sure could use one of those coats. I may have to break out the sewing machine. :)

Bridgewater, ME

I DIDN`T HAVE A SEWING MACHINE I USED THAT GLUE ITS CALLED OK TO WASH IT,AND ITS GREAT IF YOU DON`T HAVE A MACHINE(IGOT ONE FOR CHRISTMAS)OR YOU DON`T FELL LIKE DRAGING IT OUT,SHE LAYED AN EGG TODAY AND I MADE HER A NEW COAT BLACK SO MAYBE THE OTHER CHICKENS WON`T NOTICE IT ON HER AND I MADE IT SMALLER SO IT WILL ONLY COVER HER BACK.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

I will have to do that. She really does not need the injury to be reopened. My big roo is big and she is my littlest of girls! :(

(Zone 7b)

You said big roo and little hen and i feel sorry for her :(

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Yes, she is the littlest of all my girls. She is smaller than the new girls who are a lot younger.
She layed an egg today, it is the biggest egg though! She is the one laying the big eggs! Cab you believe that? She is a doll. She is still in here with me. She needs a cool coat though!

(Zone 7b)

Yes a pretty coat and a baseball bat to fight off the big roo ;)

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

LMBO!! That is funny!

Bridgewater, ME

She went back to the coop today to with her friends,I made her a black coat to go with her feathers so she wouldn`t look to much differant, she fit right in didn`t even know she had been gone for seven days. She is still limping but other than that she seems fine ishe is still laying. She will be much happier there than alone.

Bridgewater, ME

SHE STILL HAS HER COAT ON AND ITS BEEN THREE DAYS,SHE IS NOT LIMPING VERY MUCH NOW.GOING TO BE REAL COLD HER STARTING WENSDAY THURSDAY AND FRIDAY 22 BELOW THURSDAY NIGHT,FOR A HIGH FRIDAY ITS GOING TO BE TWO BELOW.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Yikes! They will all want one now!!!

Clarkson, KY

Way to go Green!! Keep at her! Glad to hear she's doing better and back with her buddies

Sue, RI(Zone 6a)

Tia, How is your hen doing?

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

She is doing great, I kept her penned up for a few day and doctored the leg. She hops along, and is my hubbys best friend, where he is she is there. Hubby now calls her Hoppy. He was washing the truck the past couple days and she had to help him.
Thanks for asking.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

hehehe I bet she HELPED!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

lol yep she did, Dont tell anyone but I think the hubby is liking the chickens more and more every day. We talked a long time last night and he might even start helping me get some more coops built. Sometimes just gotta make them think it is their idea.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Ohhh, so much for down sizing....LOL!
It was his idea after you gave it to him. :D!
Did she hold the hose or soap up with the sponge?
