Time to Settle in for the Winter? 2

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Came from here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/919421/

I shoveled out my "cat path" again today. It was so nice out I didn't even wear a jacket!

Hi Primrose!

Have you started any seeds yet?

Edited to add comment to Pixies posting on previous thread: Gee, I never imagined I would be the source of zone envy! I alway wish I was somewhere in zone 8 - preferably Vancouver Island (not hot and humid in the summer).

Hello back! No, I haven't. I just bought a bag of potting mix to do up my coleus and geranium cuttings that are growing out of their glasses! Gotta find some seed mix for the winter sowing.

Here's my 2nd year amaryllis. It looks funny because it has no leaves/fronds/whatever-you-call-them. I had the pot outside all summer and fall and the leaves died in fall. I didn't think the plant had survived, but brought it in anyway and, behold! It missed Christmas by three days.

Amaryllis typically flower first and then grow their leaves. I used a q-tip and pollinated my amaryllis a couple of years ago and I still have one of the babies left.

Seandor - Being in zone 4, I'm jealous of zone 5, let alone 6! Dogwoods, japanese maples, all sorts of perennials I can't have....believe me, zone 6 ain't bad!

And there's a place that isn't hot and humid in the summer?? Count me in! [though NW Vermont isn't bad, really....I grew up in S Florida, so I know how bad it can get!]

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

I grew up in Springfield Ma, and lived there many years as an adult. Gardening wise, it used to be zone 5--then, with global warming I guess, it was changed to zone 6. The dogwoods did fine when it was zone 5.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Very pretty amaryllis, Sue. Seandor, I wish I was in zone 8 myself!

Sue, It must be really nice to have a fresh flower to look at.
I started the new thread for the robin.
Sorry it took so long, but I was on lunch and never got the time to post it. ;)

Does finishing up planting your Fall bulbs count as winter sowing? There were three days this week that I could work outside - so I did. The last of the State of CT tulips are planted in my neighbors yards and I got my own daffs in.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

There are St. of Ct. tulips?

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Well, that is late, Cat, though I've planted spring bulbs as late as the end of December. They grew just fine, but they have never bloomed well for me where I planted them. I don't know if maybe the soil isn't to their liking or what. They were small daf bulbs, so maybe they need more time to mature. Got them from a friend and had them in for about 3 years now. Maybe they will bloom well this year. Many have not bloomed at all.

The tulips were planted at the Capital building and they take them out after they bloom every year and give them away. My State Rep brought me a large plastic garbage bag full last spring and I shared them at two RUs and still had some left over for my neighbors yards.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I have found that most varieties of tulips do not do well in following years, except for certain kinds, like Darwin hybrids, species tulips and such.

Karen

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I agree with you - I get less and less tulips every year - except for the 12 I planted in my neighbor's yard 3 years ago - westpoints, I think. Last year there were 15! I planted 12 in my yard at the same time and last year there were none! I'm not buying any more tulip bulbs - if they don't come back - and I can't eat them, then phooey.

OK big crisis at my house. I lost a pound of catnip. I remember putting it in a Tupperware container and then putting it somewhere . . . The cats are behaving normally - so they haven't found it . . .

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Even my species ones did not return after a few years.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I'm not buying anymore spring crocus either - they are too small to bother with.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Aww...gotta have one little patch of crocus, preferably near the dryer vent. Did you put the catnip in the freezer?

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh, I love crocus, though they are very tiny. I have a big patch, and it needs dividing badly. Will have to attend to that this year. Hmmmm........ There is nothing by my dryer vent. ^_^

Karen

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Not even lint?

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

LOL!

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Do the cats have access to cell phones?
This could be a business venture considering the amount missing...

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Uh, oh! Better watch out for those cats!

Karen

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Are they allowed outside? They can probably get good money for it on the street.
You just have to think "If I were me, where would I have put it?"

I have quite a few double tulips that have been performing well for me for 4-5 years now. 'Lilac Perfection' has even multiplied. Maybe benign neglect is the answer. They are in awful clay soil, although I did try to amend a bit when I planted. I try to remember to fertilize, but it's hit & miss. My 'Angeliques' are 5 yrs, not as pink as they once were, but still very nice.

AYC, that made me laugh cuz I do that ALL the time. Found it yet?

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

My in-ground Tulips planted in the orchard come back every year - those I totally neglect.
I recently read an article to interplant them with Lilies - they like the same conditions, and one is not likely to screw up the Lilies, or so the thought process goes...
I am anxious to see if the Tulips I left in pots all summer come back. This has worked before, but it's usually a mixed bag depending on how much rain we get in the summer/fall.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Memory, you're not living up to your name, are you! LOL!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

The catnip has been found! The freezer and the fridge are too full and so are all the usual cupboards - so I had put it in with the pots and pans. When I found it - I gave them some and put it back - you have got to admit that it is a good hiding place! LOL

PSue - I always say that my name is Memory so I can at least remember that. *chukle*

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

ROTFLMAO! Great minds dysfunction alike! ^_^

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Oh my gosh!
I love you guys!
You're always good for a laugh or two when I'm feeling down.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Well at least now when you can't find the catnip you can ask us, because we know where you hid it!

LOL - but maybe some of us would forget!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Congrats on locating the missing catnip. I make lists. Lots and lots of lists, then I can't find the darn list! :)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thats my DH...list to go to the store, then calls me from the store cause he forgot the list!!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I'm just as bad as the rest of you! Are all gardeners so ditzy?

Karen

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I have coleus rooting( in the lower half of a 2 ltr soda bottle) too that I still have to pot up.
All the tulips I planted here have yet to disappoint me. Ugh hope I didn't just jinx it.
Crocus is one of the only bulbs I have yet to plant,( I ordered the first ever orange crocus I'd seen but they were sold out before they got to me, should have ordered sooner I guess) my dryer vent is over concrete so that won't work.

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

I've read that it depends on the kind of tulip. If you get the "species" kind (I guess not hybrids??) that they come back more reliably year after year. I think there's a bulb or tulip forum...can probably check over there.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

The species came back for me for a few years - then died off steadily.

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

Same thing for me.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Dryer lint can be composted (as long as we're discussing it).

So that's where you got all those tulips! Now, where did they end up? I don't think planted ... maybe I didn't take any.

There's a tiny private college down the road which always has magic daffodils 2 weeks before anyone else. I was coming up with these lame explanations for DH then I finally realized they're greenhouse daffs! Then they throw them away. I keep trying to catch the landscapers at it, maybe relieve them of the burden of having to drive all the way to the landfill. I even tried to look them up in the phonebook and online, but no, couldn't find them.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Good detective work, though, Carrie
