Posting Pix on DG

Clatskanie, OR(Zone 9b)

Are there any don'ts, for posting photos on DG. What size image should I try to post on Dg???
Does anybody know off hand. I would appreciate any pointers or direction. I have a Canon D60 which is over 6 megapixels, but you can set the pixels on the Camera. I have had no luck this week getting a pic through. It all seems to end at "contacting DG", and then a complete stall out. Any help would be appreciated. Frank

Frank I believe Dave's re sizes all photos to fit so I don't think it matters.

my 8 megapixels went on fine, Frank. wouldn't worry...i know there is a limit but it is not the pixels but the actual size of the jpeg, how many bytes are making up the image...i think

Sorry Luvsgrtdanes~! ...i did not mean to contradict you! i just realized i did~ I just tossed out what i knew info wise~ You are right, but I thought i did see some limit but it could have been like myspace or facebook or some other blasted site, lol...

Oh my Darren no apologies needed!!

Frank that's one heck of a camera you have! I can only wish for that someday!! Did you upgrade or is it your first? I am hoping to upgrade to the D40 by the end of the year!

It is my first Canon digital. I used to take a lot of pix with a nice little, SPOTMATIC, film SLR,
but, in those days you payed for what you would delete today. The Canon is a heavy camera, and is covered with buttons. It is almost hard to hold it without touching some button or another. But if you have done a lot of manual SLR, this one will give you goosebumps, when it displays all the measurements, just prior to pushing the exposure button all the way down. I see now on Ebay somebody in Hong kong is selling a cordless remote exposure switch, good for a few hundred feet, for $20 or so, for the D30 and D60.
Well good luck with your D40. I hope they strip away some of those buttons and some of the weight on that model. Its bed time. Good night. Frank

Well to sum this episode up, I would like to offer a few final comments. The worst case scenerio for uploading images, is to have a low speed internet connection, and have a very high resolution setting on your digital SLR. This requires a long transmission time, if you are on max resolution.

If you don't have a jpeg setting on your camera, then set it to the lowest resolution, and this will take the least time for transmission through internet.

I like to save max resolution for follow up enlarging and editing. These settings will be a stumbling block in the previously mentioned situation. To upload pix
in a short time, you have to compromise your resolution down to the lowest!

Hey Frank,
I have a new digital SLR (Pentax) and the high resolution images from it refuse to load too. I think it takes my connection too long to upload so it times out. The best solution I have come up with is Google's free photo software Picasa. When you export a photo you have the option of resizing it to an easy upload size. I have an easy to locate upload folder that I send my resized photos to. It has the added benefit of easy uploads to their online albums (you can use your existing google account or sign up for one). You just select and bunch of photos and hit upload. It also has simple photo editing tools, nothing really fancy but you can change the contrast, add text, etc. I highly recommend it for basic photo organization and manipulation. I also discovered last week that it adds a screen saver that shows your photos as a slideshow. http://picasa.google.com/

I have the remote for my camera and it's great for taking photos where both of us want to be in the shot. Also good for taking photos of birds at our feeder because you can release the shutter without getting close enough to scare them.

Gosh! I wish I could find a remote that would work for my Kodak camera. I would love to photograph my hummingbird! :-)

I'd like to see the pic of the hummingbird, ~Becky never get tired of those little ones!!...Katlian,hey neighbor, lol~ I have google mail and news page set up, I will have to look into that ...is there a lot to download??

Katlian, thanks for the info. I too use Picasa, but have never uploaded to their website. If that is when you can downsize a pic, then I could leave my camera on a higher resolution for my own archives. Very good information. This is what I was hoping for.

I live 7 miles out of podunk Oregon, and we are so far from high speed internet, those that do have it are paying nearly $100/month for it. Our entertainment bills are going through the roof these days.

Thanks for the info you posted it was really good info, and I think there are others that will benefit from it, and maybe start paying their annual dues. Frank

Hi Frank, you can also downsize them when you export to a different folder on your computer. It's very handy. At work I export my high-res photos and downsize them. Those get used for everday work and the high-res ones get moved to an external drive so they don't eat all my hard drive space. My favorite part is that it will work on large batches of photos in the background so it doesn't require constant attention.

PS. my dad spent part of his childhood in Clatskanie.

Hey fernman, isn't it a little hard to grow ferns in Henderson? ;) It's easy to download and install, then you have to set aside a little time for it to scan all of your photos the first time you run it. After that it's very fast to see and tinker with your photos.

it is a love thing, Katlian, the ferns... I had not thought about my external drive, maybe i could try basing Picasa on it. hmmmmmmm
and Frank, it is like that EVerywhere :(...

I am pumped.......... I just discovered that in Picasa, you can use the collage mode to transfer a number of photos in one swoop, and post a number of pix in one posting. I usually am the last one to find out about these things, but if you haven't tried it yet, you will be glad that you did.

This will be good for those time lapse photos, with those digital cameras you can take timed exposures with, like a flower opening at 5 am, or all the pictures of a process, and just load the group of pix, and one dialogue for it. This is going to be a great tool for us during the next blooming season. Frank

All I know is that if I just crop a picture, it uploads so quickly. If I don't crop in some way, it takes forever.

Clatskanie, OR(Zone 9b)

Guess what, the collage uploads slowly, becaus of the number of pictures and their resolution! Nonetheless, if we reduce our resolution, we still can upload a group of pictures in a collage in less time. I am still experimenting. People that are going nowhere, never fail during experiments. Frank
