I like chickens, big chickens we recently bought some land and will be having chickens
but I like the larger breeds. Question: in which breeds can I get the most cluck for the buck?
Which ones grow the largest?
I like the big uns
I think that it's between a jersey giant and a buff orpington. Jersey giants are bigger though.

Are you raising chickens for eggs or for meat? It depends on that which breed will be best. There are certain breeds for each that are the best.
Egg layers; red stars, Black stars, and Leghorns,Rhode Island Red, and Barred Rock.
Meat birds;Cornish Cross (White Cornish x White Plymouth Rock)
It all depends on what you prefer though. :)
Welcome!!!!!
Light Brahma Roosters get Huge and the hens are nice and big also.

Mainly just to have them around but I would not rule out a Sunday dinner
once or twice a year. I just remember growing up that the neighbors had some big white ones that seemed to be the size of foghorn leghorn, but I never knew the breed.
Hey! I have a small banty rooster, but he thinks he six-six. Ha Ha What ever you decide, have fun and good luck. And yes welcome to the forum. Haystack
I see. The Brahma have nice temperment as well! They are pretty. They look like they have fancy pants! I have my big Brahma rooster who comes when I call him. He is a big baby. He will not eat the food I throw on the ground. He wants to eat out of your hands!
Haystack, I absolutely love the bantys! They are class acts!!! If you are looking for friends (pets) I recommend hand raising them. All mine are hand raised and come when I call them. Its easy to round them up when I need to. I sure do love them! I hope to see a lot of you here. Its a fun group! ^_^
I have Brahamas and Jersey Giants. They both lay well and have good temperments. The eggs are not as large as you would expect from such a large chicken and they do take longer to mature, but we have found them good for both laying and meat if you are willing to wait. A bit smaller, but faster to mature is the barred rocks. They lay big brown eggs and make a tasty bird. If I am going for meat alone, I like the cornish cross. Some people butcher as early as six weeks, but we go 15 to 20 for a big bird with lot of flavor. I have a friend who has two that are laying, but most go lame before they reach the six month maturity.
Welcome!
Wow i didn't know their were so many Brahma fans i use to have a trio and my roo would have easily weighed 15-20lbs and his 2 hens were nice and fluffy with very sweet personalitys.
I have a HUGE soft spot for the Brahmas. They are BIG sweeties!
Hi Harm! If i had a big 15-20 lb Roo Jumping on me I'd be a big fluffy docile sweetie too. YIKES RUN BABY RUN. Haystack
Oh goodness Haystack he was a perfect gentleman to his hens if he wasn't i would have made stew of him.
Ok I must admit. I LOVE BRAHMAS! They are the next breed we are wanting to get. I love the large birds. Does anyone here sell brahma hatching eggs.
I would go through the hatchery, but I was looking for a breeder first.

What a handsome fellow, a real... well, I was going to say manly man, but I guess it would be more correct to say roostery roo? LOL He reminds me of some silver haired leading man... help me out here, my movie knowledge is puny. Someone elegant, yet strong...

Well I have the same problem with names, it takes me a long time to remember anyones name.
Antonio Banderas played Zorro AND he has his own cologne...the older ones are better though...
Matt Dillion was James Garner
Not Garner, James Arness. Garner was much sexier
Peter Graves... wasn't he the original Mission Impossible silver haired dude? He'd work... very cool, sophisticated yet strong...
Jean Luc Picard... isn't that Patrick Stewart? Just slap a silver toupe on him...
Make it so!
