Nice shot critterologist!

- Another Nikonian here, Nikon D90 w/ Nikon 70-300mm

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Nice. Now there's a bird I wish we had out here. Their coloring is such a great contrast to the snow.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

LOL, the Nikon D90 would have been my choice had my budget been more generous... when they call the P90 a "bridge" camera, is that like calling Cannabis a "gateway" drug? I think I am closer to serious DSLR lust. ;-)

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

...and I decided to do w/o some features I didn't need and go with the D90 instead of the D300 and spend some cash on some good glass instead. Photography can be quite expensive! lol!

LOL that lens was a sweet choice!

critterologist - that's a nice Cardinal pic.

DH keeps wanting ot get me a SLR but I know that I would soon be wanting every lens plus I am known to break and/or loose things. I also have vertigo so I am at times a little wobbly so would need a tripod almost all the time. So best to stick with good Point & Shoots.

Now of I could afford both and have a nice SLR set up in the house all the time, that would PERFECT! LOL

I guess I added my other camera too soon. I just ordered the Canon 7D yesterday and it should be here by the 24th!

Hi All,

Spent hours dealing with the snow today!

I just got a Canon EOS Rebel XSi. The kit came with a 70-300 zoom/macro lens and another smaller zoom (which I haven't really even explored). I am still figuring out how to use it; think that I need to take a class!

Dave: Gorgeous kittens! I had Himmies years ago before dogs. I have a Ragdoll now.....he runs things around here:

sacarvounis - have been watching the snow reports. It sounds like you all got hit pretty hard. Last year at this time we were under a foot of snow. This year it's in the high 40's. Go figure.

May I ask where you got your camera? I've been looking at kits at Cameta cameras. www.cameta.com.

Columbus, GA(Zone 8a)

ducbucln - Wow - congrats - a Canon 7D and maybe in time for Christmas. When you post your first pics, be sure to tell us you're using your new camera.

Did you see thread I started featuring comparisons pics I took with my 70-300 alone and then with the Tamron 1.4x and 2x converters separately and then stacked together?

Didn't know the teleconverters stacked I suppose you can stack 2 (2x) converter's? All for not for me, my current lenses will not take converters. Maybe next year I will upgrade but for now my current lenses will be fine for Warbler's come May.

Columbus, GA(Zone 8a)

Burd_Fotos - Physically, you could stack two 2x converters, but I think you'd lose so much light hitting the sensor, that It may not work.

Okay, we're updated.

Duc, watch that 7D so MargaretK doesn't get it.

Ooow, Mrs Ed, you read my mind. Duc, I am seriously envious. You've got to tell us how you find it. What lens/es will you be using? I was enquiring (again) about the 7D this afternoon and apparently you can shoot in JPEG and there's a button that when you activate it, you'll take RAW images as well, instead of the more lengthy process that exists on the 40D. VERY handy.

Katie....This was our 1st real snow fall of the season and it was a long storm hence the snow totals. But we didn't lose power and my kids are already out of school so it is OK. My husband bought my camera from a vendor at a flea market in SC. She had upgraded to something else and just wanted to unload it. The price was so ridiculously low, he decided to take a chance on it and it has been great.

My brother used to work in Woodinville at Chateau St. Michelle....lovely spot!

Columbus, GA(Zone 8a)

Thanks Mrs_Ed. Looks like a lot of work went into this project. I appreciate it.

Merry Christmas

Thanks Hack. I don't think it was too much trouble, though I can't really remember. lol.

I guess I should to update my equipment list. I now use the Canon 1D MkIII along with the 50D (sidekick), 400mm 5.6 lens and recently purchased the 500mm f4 IS lens (world of difference in pic quality when compared to my other lens).

Duc congrats on the new camera...I finally saw a fellow photographer with the new 7D...it's a beaut.
Here's a couple of links that I think will help in getting around the 7D from owners(save yourself some headaches as it's a powerful machine:

Neat thread!

I have the Canon T1i with an 18-55mm lens, and a 55-250mm lens. I also carry a Canon point and shoot with me at all times... an SD780.

I really want a 100-400mm L lens, and while I'm dreamin', I want a 5D Mark II body!

Dover AFB, DE(Zone 7a)

For what it is worth in MY hands, I have a Samsung 10.2 WB500. The learning curve is especially steep for me, as I have always had my DSon and DH taking the pictures and am having to learn everything.

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Met, I really appreciate the links you provided. This will really be helpful to me.

I'm really not that knowledgeable with a camera yet and probably don't deserve it, but I'm determined to learn everything I can from you and others on this board and by all the online information I can find. I figure I might as well learn on the camera I'd be wanting in the future anyway.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Practice, practice, practice! don't be lazy like me and set it on automatic all the time! :))

Sandusky, OH

Ive been trying to find a teleconverter for my larger EF-S lens, I read that EF-S lenses are relatively new and most canon telecoverter's do not work with them, but I did find a Kenko that will work with my bigger lens 55-250mm, and its a 3x teleconverter. I read some reviews (which were mixed) and the bumps it has on the Aperture, I guess I'll play with manual focus to get better first, as most reviews indicated the AF may not read, and when it does it jumps around a bit before finally focusing.

Columbus, GA(Zone 8a)

Burd_Fotos - I find that my 1.4x Tamron teleconverter auto-focuses better than my 2x Tamron. The 2x, I'd guess 50% of the mine needs me to do manual focus.

No problem Ducbucln, you just have some reading and playing around to do. Waiting to see some of your work.

You know I thought about selling the 50D and getting the 7D but the used price on the 50D has dropped significantly since the 7D came out. I was hoping to get at least $1k to supplement the purchased but the 50Ds are going for about $750 used. Well like computers, camera bodies change often with new technology...that's why you spend the money on the glass. I guess next year this time the 7Ds will cost about $800 used. So I figured I'd stick with the 50D as I still get nice photos from it but when the light requires a higher ISO I switch to the 1D3.

Hello, I now use a D300 for most of my shots. I have the following lenses, all Nikon: 500mm F4 MF ED P, 400mm F5.6 ED MF, 300mm F2.8 ED MF, and others that I rarely use for wildlife.

Hi Marna. Here is an update of sorts. I just added a 7D to my camera collection and here is a photo of my telephotos. From left to right: 200mm f/1.8, 300mm f/2.8 IS, 400mm f/4 DO IS, 500mm f/4 IS and the 600mm f/4 IS. The 500mm is wearing a 1.4x TC.

Dave, Are you going to take some video's with the 7D? I would love to see one of your Bluebirds!

Yes, Marna, this camera craving is spinning hopelessly out of control. Some people invest in real estate, others buy sport cars. I can just see the lawyer as he reads my will " ... and to my daughter, Jennifer, I leave my Canon 1D Mark III and two extra batteries."

I don't know about videos, Pelle. I have a couple of weddings coming up later this year and really got the 7D to use for that. I do expect it will be pointed at a few birds in the meantime, however. And yes, Duc, we can learn together. It is a wonderful tool.

Thank you Rose for saying what you did and for not saying what I might have... about people who show off.

Dave

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

"With two extra batteries" Funny

I'm quite happy with my camera, but I could really use a GOOD long lens. Don't worry Dave, yours are safe from me because I have a pentax. I won't be raiding your camera cupboard tonight.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Wow, Dave. Color me green with envy, as well. But . . . "of those to whom much is given, much is asked." and all that. I'm looking forward to seeing more of the fruits of your craving.

Kathy

Dover AFB, DE(Zone 7a)

Oh, I agree with Kathie!

Florence, MS(Zone 8b)

I want a 100-400L. With that I can get good pix using a converter. Canon cameras work best with converters when L lenses are attached. With that lense I can still back it down for the deer and aligators but zoom for the birds. I never know what is around the next tree in the swamp.
