Jacob's Walking Stick

Litchfield, ME(Zone 5a)

It isn't a Jacobs walking stick it is a Harry Landers Walking Stick. Whoops!!

Can anyone tell me how to propagate this? Cuttings and or seeds.
Thanks Robin

I propagated mine last year by air layering. The new plant is doing awesome now too. It survived the hot summer after being separated from the mother plant. People told me this wouldn't work, but 100% of my plants took.

Hi Robin!

There is an article on this shrub here on DG by Toni Leland: http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/2031/

It's a great article for background.
It says that the particular shrub Harry Lauder's is grafted unto a standard rootstock, so if that is the one you are trying to multiply, you may have other things to consider.

I love my plant and hello from another Mainer. ;)

Thank you. So seed saving can that be done?

Central, ME(Zone 5a)

You can save the seed, but it will not produce the Walking Stick as you have it.
The walking sticks are made from two plants, the rootstalk and the top crown.
Your seeds will produce a plant that is not like the parent. Not saying it won't be nice- just not the same. If you have the space to grow it out, why not?

Thank You Cyndiehook, I thought I was understanding in your previous post that the walking stick was actually tow trees grafted. Now I do. I think I will try it and see what I get .

I have some of the root stock if you need some cuttings.

I didn't graft mine and the new plant is already 4 feet tall. You also don't have to worry about the suckers this way. Air layering worked for me and it should work for you.

Would some one tell me what air layering is?

Thanks arejay
This is ALMOST like grafting. I was wondering how hard it would be to do brugs this way. They are a semi hard woody plant.

Just had a great meal and watched a movie. Now time for bed. LOL
Forecast of snow kept us home alone tonight.
May you all have great gardens next year.
