frill backs starting to hatch!!

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

i got oddly, lol 2 pips on the first pigeon egg this am when i checked about 6 am. no advances yet and still waiting it hasn't zipped out yet. keep ur fingers crossed my uggy piggies will hatch and be healthy and all goes good. only one should hatch a squeaker today the other pigeon egg was laid 2 days later and they have sat since first one was laid so it will be a day or so behind this one. both parents r on the nest awaiting the new arrival!!!

yesterday the other pair laid the first egg in their second nest so i'm totally excited!!. both their first nests had duds so all 4 eggs had to be thrown. i'll keep ya posted how the new nesters go as for these both candled excellent this time around.

for the nest getting ready to hatch, this is mom who is black her name is onyx.

i'll give u more of an update in a few and pics of the baby. gotta do cell pics so will take a few. egg #2 has a pip this am so it will be born today!!!

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

ok, first baby pipped 2 times yesterday one hole above the other and didn't hatch, poor thing was stuck in the egg and needed help hatching so i had to incubate him and help him out of shell. thank god i've had experience helping hatch so many times if not he'd of been an internal pip and never made it. no blood and no probs and baby is fine!!!

i tried putting it back in with mom and dad and they except it and will keep it warm however it is so small they don't see it i guess. when they leave the nest to eat he is left uncovered yet the egg is rolled under them. it's weird and he was getting cold. so he is back in the sportsman hatcher bundled in a nest i made him in there.

Thumbnail by silkiechick
Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

he was starting to look dehydrated and weak so i smashed up food and mixed with water and syringed fed him and he has perked up alot and looking good!! he is now lifting his head up!!!

soon as everyone is awake i got to go get a piece of rubber tubeing and hand rearing formula from town so i can crop feed him. it is way safer than syringe feeding. thankfully i have hand reared birds for many years so i'm not worried, he should do fine and i have researched emergancy feeding for baby pigeons so i know when to up things and ween and such. i'll keep u posted how he does and take pics as he grows.

i'm wondering however if the other hatches fine if he is put in the nest again if they will find him to take care of him fineally or if i should just total handrear only him? they want so bad to be parents and r doing good i just think they don't know he is there. he makes no noise and is only mabe 1" tall, i honestly think as huge as they r they can't see or feel him and since he didn't hatch under them they don't know he is there. so should i try one more time to add him to nest once the other hatches? if not i have no probs hand rearing i'm just wondering if it would work, i'd rather mom and dad care for him if they can.

Congrats Silkie! I hope you're able to get it back to the parents. Good Luck!

I'm sooo glad you're posting all of this -nice to hear how it''s done.

What if they gave up the other one 'cuz the timing's so different?

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

well since 3 of the kids r up and not everyone and i have been up so much i have been watching it. i decided to try again to allow him back with mom and dad since he is moveing head and body some to know more he is there.

mom is day watcher today so best to put him under when she is on. i showed him to her and carefully placed him under her and had a mom to mom talk to her, lol. i'm about 3ft from the loft so i can see her on the nest while at the comp. she has noticed him and tucked him under her up with the egg so keeping fingers crossed!!! dad was doing a call and flapping wings a little bit latter like he was announceing the new arrival mabe??

i usually pull babies at 1 week old to handrear and he is very small and fragile to what a 1 week old is so as long as i see they r doing right by him he will stay in there with mom and dad. i much rather he be brooded if possible at least till he doesn't need the milk from them. i have no probs rearing him i've had to do it with teils as young as 2 days old but if i have to pull him permanantly i'd rather it be after the supplies r here that r best to use for him to give him a better chance.

i think if he was added after baby 2 hatched they would risk more abandoning one of them but since 2 is still working on zipping and should hatch today i think they will both be fine.

Clarkson, KY

Yay. I couldn't quite figure why there would be so much difference in times, but I guess there's not really -just felt like it.

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

the time difference is cause they sat immediately on the first egg soon as laid so since egg 2 was laid 2 days later it made it a speratic hatch. had they waited to sit till egg 2 was laid they both would have hatched together. i don'[t have dummy eggs to pull first eggs and replace once egg 2 is laid so they hatch together. till i do it is speratic hatches.

the only differnce it makes is baby 2 will be smaller and behind and the first will be bigger and feed more. i just have to keep an eye on baby 2 it doesn't fall behind to much.

i'm happy to say mom and dad now know the baby is there and r bonding with him and r feeding him!!!! so he will be staying with them and the egg is getting cracked a little bigger but still not pipped through whole way yet. they r both nuzzleing with him!!!!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

O how wonderful that they have accepted the first baby ^_^

Clarkson, KY

Too cool! So glad you convinced 'em!!

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

i'm very releaved they have. i have been haveing problems with my gal bladder and been sick almost everyday for a mth or so now and may need surgery soon to remove it. incase something happens i can't be here i want to make sure they r ok and with mom and dad.

Elbridge, NY(Zone 5a)

Oh wow silkie! It is so small! And cute. I sure hope mom and dad are doing well.
Congrats!

Hope you feel better soon. I had my gallbladder removed this summer.

Ferndale, WA

Silkie: I'm so impressed with your poise and sense of calmness. These babies are so fortunate to have someone like you caring for them. If I get sick can I call you? LoL. Seriously I was wondering how you knew that little baby was stuck? And how long after the second pip did you wait before helping it. Also how did you help? like peel away the shell and inner liner or what. I really am amazed at your steely nerves and keen sense of judgement as whether to hand raise or put the baby back with the parents. Keep up the good work. Good luck Haystack

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

awe, thanks. i'm trying i'm tired of being sick and in pain. i missed my tests due to being so sick so i have to reschedule but if it keeps getting worse i'm just gonna go to the er and let them figure it out cuz something sure needs done and soon if possible.

mom, dad and baby r all doing great and r a happy family i'm sooo happy for them!!! the second egg still hasn't hatched yet. little squeaker is so funny they fill his crop good looks like a little heart in front of his chest, lol.

thanks haystack, all i can say is i've hatched thousands of chicks of many breeds over the years, delivered many kittens, puppies and then some so mother nature has always been my best teacher. the best lerning and knowing tool is experience, makeing mistakes and learning from it and how close u r to ur animals to know them.

how did i know it was stuck? it pipped with no progress for to long, when i first saw pips it had 2 already. when candled he was in the aircell but never broke through the outer membrain. had i not interviened it would have ran out of air and suffacated the air cell was to small. the baby couldn't progress on own even with incubation so i hatched it a little at a time. going by look of membrain told me it was over due, even when helped it couldn't hatch rest on own he was all twisted up in there odd and the pip was down a little to far. i helped it hatch in steps if after so far they can hatch on own i let them a baby who kicks and fights to get out and hatches on own will be stronger stock so it is best to leave alone if they can do for themselves.

i usually don't help unless it has been 12-24 hours sometimes i do sooner if it is in trouble worse like a bottom side pip. how did i help it? it only cracked the shell i had to help remove everything else from it in steps little by little includeing inside membrain.

i would have loved to hand rear him but if i have to get surgery to remove my gal bladder or apendix(i think GB though) i'd not be able to care for him so i didn't want to risk someone not able to care for him for 1. for 2 i spend time with my birds everyday and they r inside pets u learn their body language and habbits when u constantly spend time with them, we treat them as parrots and pets so they trust us and r close to us. i knew how bonded this pair was and how dedicated they were to the last nest. they was really po'ed i took the last eggs lol they were duds. so with everything combined in my heart i felt it was best to try and a momma broody is best over a serogant human and 2 parents brooding is more awesome yet. they trusted me so i had to trust them too and i'm very thankful i did.

(Zone 7b)

Silkie congrats on the little one!
I've never had an experience like yours with my pigeons but i always candle mine at 7 days and never touch the eggs after that.
I don't intefere with the hatching in fact the first sign i know they have hatched is the shell on the bottom of the cage.
If you want to solve the staggered hatch remove the first egg and replace it when the second is laid then they both hatch on the same date.
I also IMHO wouldn't hand rear a baby pigeon as his parents know when to feed and how much and he needs their loveing attention.

I'm sorry to hear about your gall bladder had mine out 5 years ago under protest of course from me saying i could handle the pain. But when i woke up one morning doubled over and crying i said GET IT OUT!

Ferndale, WA

Silkie: Thanks for taking the time to explain, I'm so impressed with your demeanor and how you are so excellent with those birds and the love you seem to have toward them. What a lesson for all of us. I know what you mean about spending time with your birds though. I was told that my Marans were going to be flighty birds. I spend a huge amount of time with them and can almost predict their every move. My wife always tells me about how she lost her husband to a chicken. I hope you get this surgery done soon, so you won't have to go through any more pain. Thanks again and a very Happy New Year to you and yours . Hay.

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

i've been to sick to be on but wanted to update while i could. little squeaker is now like 5 days old and growing like a weed and eyes r starting to open. mom and dad r such proud parents and daddy is who spoils him most, lol. i got updated pics gotta upload.

the other egg internal pipped and baby died, i had been to sick i couldn't be there to watch for it to hatch i just let them take care of it. i think the prob is they r an 08 hatch i think she is laying smaller eggs than she should since she is a new layer and the babies r getting stuck. i don't know how old they actually r since breeder didn't tell me hatch date of them but her eggs r smaller than lexi's who is an 07 hatch so i assume that is the prob.

Reynoldsville, PA(Zone 6a)

OH! Your uggie is soooo cute and it has alot of fuzz i'm so happy you finally got your baby.
I hope you spoil him good they really take to spoiling and any attention you can give them. Mine should be hatching pretty soon i felt of them and their heavy so that tells me theirs a big baby in there.
About the egg size that could very well be the problem with her being young this could be her first hatch.

Congrats on your uggie baby and before you know it they will have eggs again they breed like rabbits LOL
