still have mealies!

Williston, ND

if they are half as bad on your other plants,id toss them and start over with all new clean pots, and stuff, thats a major infestation you have on that plant

JIM

Wytheville, VA

Yes, it is. That plant was tucked in back & I probably missed the weekly Neem misting.
that's the worst I've seen. Still, you are right.
Sigh!

As a kid I helped my Grand Dad in his greenhouses. We washed the bugs that looked like that in alcohol and water by dipping the upper part into the glass of the solution. He then used Malathion or something as a soil drench. He said that alcohol was the only safe bug killer to use on these plants and the stem had bugs on it below the soil line and maybe the roots too.

Good luck getting rid of this infestation.

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

wow, thats pretty bad, are they all like that?

Cicada-- went to Lowes today-- they have horticultural D. E.

Dover AFB, DE(Zone 7a)

Oh! I forgot an important part of the thing my GDad did. We poisoned in the morning, kept them under a box all day, then rinsed them thoroughly before putting them in the quarantine case(fish tank repurposed for this)

Wytheville, VA

Juney, what exactly did you poison with?

Brownsville, KY(Zone 6a)

Hillbilly_Gran,
Thanks for the information. I'll check with the Lowes in my area.

Dover AFB, DE(Zone 7a)

I'm not sure what he used, Nowdays when I smell Malathion, I think that is what he used as a soil drench. He sat the pot in a pan of it. We had used cloth to wrap the pot in to keep the soil in it when we washed the plant (upside down swishing it in the water/alcohol blend). The cloth stayed on and was submerged for the soil drench part.

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

BATS (Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub)has worked well for me on a Hoya that had mealies. It's a soil drench....pretty expensive @ $20+ per bottle. 1 TBSP per gallon of water. It lasts a long time though.

Alcohol works well on a very light infestation. I don't think it will be an effective method on your plants, given the photo you posted above. If the soil drenches don't work, I would chuck the plants and start over. These little devils can be difficult to get rid of with an infestation as heavy as this.

I'm so sorry that you have them. :(

It would be my guess that the plant whose pic you postedis the source for your re-infestation of the other plants-- i would BURN that one.

Nottingham, MD(Zone 7a)

HG- I second that idea!

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Kivit I am so sorry about your plants.... I did not have that many on my plants when I had them and I tossed them in the a trash bag and took it to the dumps.. How many plants do you have ???? After it warms up I could send you some leaves or if I have extra doubles of plants I could send you a few babies.... How far are we from each other?

kivit, i am sure between all of us here on daves we can replenish your supply.

You are all very kind, but I need to get my growing system purged before I accept anything.
that plant may be the source as it was behind the light phlange( the two wings that hang down from the fixture) at the back of the shelf. I have been spraying them weekly with Neem oil & Pyola but I didnt even see that one. So it is the worst. Actually I only found one other plant that had 2 bugs-nothing like the photo.
My little collection of AV's are in another wing of the house. They are clean.
I have 1 rack of streps in the kitchen that seems to be clean. The other is in the living room where those white fuzzies keep appearing.
I have tossed the photo plant. It was pretty scary looking. Even though I drowned it in chemicals, I couldnt tell if the mealies were dead.
Grow happy, all of these plants were drenched with Bayer Advanced. That's how I lost a majority of them because I used the manufacterer's suggested concentration.
This summer, I had my streps outside, and sprayed them with Malathion before bringing them in. Then I had my disaster with BA. Things got pretty clean after that, but I never seem to get rid of ALL the mealies. Jim suggested Marathon a couple of months ago and a spray from Gardens Alive. Bought both. I know it takes a while for the Marathon to get into the plant. Maybe I have flushed it out with watering. I have applied it twice.
Well, I have to wash the racks & trays with bleach, buy new pots & start a purge.
Guess I need to shaow you that I do have some healthy streps!

Kivit, my heart goes out to you. This is just awful. I'm so sorry!!!!! ((((Hugs)))))
Nevertheless, you do have some beauties. They're grown very well. I especially like your 'Night Beacon' and 'Karen'.

Are you planning on attending the 2009 Gessie Convention in June/July in Silver Spring, MD? You will probably be able to buy some there. Not that you won't have replenished your collection by then, but!

Wytheville, VA

Maryland???
Ooooooo! that's about 6 hours from here! Where do I sign up?

Williston, ND

Something else to try,put some rubbing alcohol in a bottle and spray them all
and keep doing it ,it will melt the mealies, and check some of the home and garden shops, they have a fungicide that works on mealies too,you will just have to read directions,i sure you can get it

JIM

Dover AFB, DE(Zone 7a)

So glad that you had those beauties in another room!

Morning Kivit!

6 hours is a looooooong way, huh? Ouch!

Wytheville, VA

I realized that I cant submerge a plant in BA because it is toxic for the leaves.
So I still need a cidal for mealies.
i also think that my plants are turning brown not becasue of the mealies (because there are none visible) but because of phototoxicity from the Neem oil & Pyola I have been spraying with them with.
Can Avid, Conserve or be used for submersion?
I will have to Google Enstar which Rob's Violets mentions.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Kivit,
I took two gallons of water and put first avid in there and turned my plants upside down and dipped them in it... Then when I got the conserve I did the same thing... I was told not to use neem oil at all but I don't really have an opinion on that as I have never used it.
Sue

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I only use Neem oil when I have washed the leaves of my streps real clean and just want a little sheen to the look (LOL)

Wytheville, VA

Ordered the Enstar ll! Whew! $60/5 oz!

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Cape Cod to me had the best prices for bug killers... I think the conserve was like 2.00 for one ounce...
Sue
