I figured that it was about time for a new thread, and likely the last of '08!
We came from here http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/933326/
I like to start of new threads with pictures for some reason. Here's one of my now much shorter Nandina, thanks to the snow. I forgot to post the picture yesterday.
What Wierd (and Cold) Weather We Have #8
Nandina is very brittle. Mine breaks back every year it snows. But they do grow back quickly and are worth having. My hellebores were starting to bloom before the snow. I have seeds sprouting in my golf cart shed. They are about an inch high. (hellebores)
That's really great that you're seedlings are doing so well Willow! So did you do the cross pollinating so you could try to get the type of flowers that you want or did you let nature take it's course? I have "seedlings" that will be at least four years old this year. I'm very hopeful that this will be their year to bloom, although I'm sure that they won't come up until at least March. I just let nature do the work, so we'll see what we get. Do you ever get berries on you Nandina then since it keeps getting "pruned" back? I really don't mind that it has broken off every year for the last 3 or 4 years (when am I going to remember to stake it before snow:-p ) but, I really would like to finally see some berries on it. It always flowers through! The weather just seems to cut the cycle short! I might try salvaging the leader, when the weather dries out enough that I think I'll be able to get a bandage to stay.
Never did get snow last night, o.k. by me. But it did get icy, walking across the driveway was treacherous this morning. Gone before noon though, so not too bad.
Our pond is filling up behind the house, watched a heron preening in the sun this morning. Nice way to start the day, which warmed up to 44! More rain coming in for the next week looks like, but will stay warm.
My pond is still frozen over, but not really solid anymore, and my nandina has been snow-pruned, too. Have to say, though, that as much as I love seeing herons, after losing 5 fish last spring to a visiting one, I do not welcome them anywhere near my pond. Your pond must be a natural one? Mine is about 3 feet deep, but herons are tall and have a long reach!
huh, sounds as if the Nandina's around here have taken a bit of a hit this year. The 10 day forcast is actually starting to look somewhat reasonable for a while, rain every day, but at least that is reasonable. Sorry to hear about your fish Pixy, that's not good. Hopefully your Heron will head on over to Sally's place.
Sally, I'm glad to hear that my commute into town tomorrow then might actually be clear! That's a change!
My "pond" is actually the drainage ditch that collects the street runoff. LOL It is natural, this used to be a farm and it was part of the natural drainage that they utilized. We get to enjoy it all winter and I think it keeps the heron off the private property. Lots of frogs. We've had a nesting pair for several years, but one of them disappeared a couple of years ago. It's sad to see just the one. They are such beautiful birds, I love to watch them walk. Most people here lose their fish to raccoons. Living on the edge, close to the trees, we don't even try a pond. As it is the raccoons take a bath in our fountain on a regular basis, so we know they come through nightly.
No matter what causes it, it's still a pond! and a decent sized one at that!
I'll take a picture of it tomorrow. It's starting to fill quite well.
I bet it is!
There's a seasonal creek that runs down beside my driveway (no, not the river behind the house :-p ) . It went from having nothing in it 3 days ago to being a fully functional creek as of yesterday afternoon. While I want the snow gone yesterday, I sure hope it melts at a slow pace! I would imagine that the same scenario would be true of your pond as well.
Yep,you got it.
I just pick the seeds out of the pods and plant them. I'm not one to do small fussy things. Or to remember what I did yesterday. Or to remember to put on tags. I guess it is more fun to be surprised. If they don't come up, I don't remember what I put in there so it doesn't bother me. My nandina usually has flowers and berries on some part of it.
Our snow is melting! We had a little rain and are supposed to get some showers. That will be good. Saw sunshine and blue sky today. Spring can't be far behind.
Tomorrow's high is supposed to be mid 60's. Crazy weird!
Rained all day, not heavy, but steady. Windy too. Just got an alert on my weather program that we have a flood watch warning, looks like it's worse on the coast. I'll have to go take a look at the river tomorrow. My little pond behind our place is filling in nicely.
Willow....sounds like you garden like I do. LOL
Jan...60's? Will that cause flooding problems for you, hope not.
This part of the pond.
Sally, the pond looks great!!! I would bet money that your pond is at least 6" higher by morning! If not more than that. you should go out and take a picture of the pond tomorrow just for comparison. The river rose over 12" today. by morning it'll likely be at the top of "normal" water level for winter. That would mean that it would have to go up another 6-8" overnight, and I think that it will if it keeps raining! crazy stuff.
Jan, at least we are all in this crazy weather stuff together! It felt warm today, i think that it was only 45 :-p. How are you folks on the water levels?
Thanks for the info Willow! that's good to know. At this rate, i'm not going to get berries, but at least there's a chance.
I don't have any one but it doesnt mater they keep saying it will warm up so I hope the snow goes away soon. I can't go any where any way. my vans transmission went out and no money to repair it.
I just wish the snow would leave the older I get the more I like no snow even though I do enjoy looking at it and seeing the big flakes coming down, I just don't want to go out in it. This is a picture from my front door.
Well, as i mentioned over in the other thread, I sure hope that things thaw out and perk up for you soon Marcia. The snow will melt eventually, but at least it's not expensive. That's too bad that you're stuck with that transmission. I sure hope that you're able to get it up and running soon.
Currently 62, but no flooding here. We haven't had the snow like places just a couple hours north of us had. My county is pretty flat and lots of wetlands (swamps - or meadows as they like to politely call them) and the Delaware River and Bay are close by so we don't usually have a lot of flooding, unless the tides are right and the storms are bad.
So it sounds as if you get to enjoy the warm weather without worry Jan. That's a really good thing that you should be able to take advantage of
Yikes! The river went up another foot overnight! Fortunately though, it isn't raining now, so that should slow things down. Also very good that the reservoirs between here and the valley were on the lowside of things, so maybe they'll be able to take the brunt of what's coming down now.
The rain is back.
Sally, I am curious about the pond. But, I'm even more curious about your end of the river! Are you watching it like a hawk yet?
Shokami, how is the coast doing so far? I read on the local weather news last night there were some streets closed already, due to water, in a few of the smaller coastal towns. I don't remember which ones though.

I just came in from outside. Mom laid down for a rest at 1 so out I went. Currently 65 and cloudy. I pulled some vinca vine out of a bed. Maybe I can keep ahead of it. Little did I know a few years ago that the pretty hanging vine in my container would take off. LOL I figured I would let it grow and then I wouldn't have to get any the following year. It had the last laugh. I still have some where I want it, but it SURE does spread.
I also put some potting soil in some containers for my winter-sowing adventure this year. I can hardly grow anything from seed. LOL So, we shall see if this works for me. I figured I would get the containers ready for when I'm ready to sow seed. I better go check out the winter-sowing forum again. :)
Hopefully you won't have any flooding. A foot overnight! Once when I was in college and camping, the liquid refreshment was placed in the river to chill. The next morning the river had risen and it was nowhere to be seen. Someone had a good laugh I'm sure when they came back to their camp and said, "Look what I caught!"
Red, thanks for starting a new thread, I tried to check all “my” threads before I left to make sure they’d be within a decent length by the time I got back, but I guessed I missed this one.
I don't care how much we have on the grass, I just want it gone from the cement; it seems to be getting there.

I’m not sure what happened, I got sent here from two separate threads…
We had a great Christmas all around, not in this order for importance, loved my gifts, everyone loved the gifts we gave and I got to spend time with family I rarely see. What more could you ask for? Except, the exhaust is trying to come off the car, but it made it there and back, just couldn’t get it through the icy streets in town.
Tilly, yep, we were right there; twice.
Wow! These threads get long fast! We're on #8 already!
We had about 4 inches of snow disappear overnight with the wind we had ALL NIGHT LONG! And it's still windy. Hope everyone are doing well.
Susan
Took a walk back to the river, the rain finally let up for a while. It's running fast, dirty and high....very high. We're still o.k., we've got a long way to go before any trouble. There's a spillway that would have to fill and then the field to cross. And most of these houses sit above (like ours) the field. It would have to be something really major to cause flooding here.
Here's what it usually looks like.
Talk about threads getting long.....8 isn't too bad.....I hang out on Sweet Interruptions and we are on #82 right now!!
Sally, looks like you are getting some water....hope it doesn't get too high......for any of you.
Our streets are clear.....Darn....I was enjoying just staying in and not having to go anywhere for awhile.....now it will be back to go go go...
zhinusmom...I know what you mean, no excuses now. I was enjoying the break.
Well Sally, it has already started.....picked up son in law and took him down to retrieve his car .....had to pick up a few things at JoAnn's (that is a nightmare)...Laura was looking for some specific boots so had to check every shoe store in town, drop her back home....bring my stuff home....go back and pick them up to deliver them to their Christmas Party that had to be rescheduled from last week......exchange some clothes, take the DH by Lowes....had dinner out since the granddaughter was with us....and since I volunteered to be designated driver, I have to go back and pick up Sean and Laura after the party tonight........the Snow really wasn't so bad after all.....I just want to stay home....
Sounds like too much running to me. Hope the party is close by at least and they will leave at a reasonable time! At least you didn't have to cook. I understand about the designated driver part, but don't let them run you ragged.
Its only about five miles......they do need to get their car fixed....soon. The muffler got ripped loose in the ice and snow....it sounds like a jet getting ready for takeoff!
LOL...not a good thing!
We had that happen to us on a Porche 924 years ago.....woke up people for blocks around.....we finally shut off the car and pushed it the last 2 blocks home...I laught now, it wasn't funny at the time....we had to drive from Riverside to Los Angeles.....surprised we aren't both deaf as a result....or in jail. But the kids are home from their party, just have to get him to work at eleven in the morning then we will worry about the car.
Was getting foggy when we came in....good time to be home. At least Bill got a sheet of acrylic cut to fit my car window so I don't have to drive in the rain with the window stuck down. Hoefully on payday we can get it fixed.
Finally got the granddaughter to bed, now I think I will follow. All this running around, and a sore throat on top of it has worn me out. Have a good night all.
