YES YES pick me.
I want to learn to make jams and jellies, I have read it is not that hard to make.
I am going to clean out my freezer this spring and it will have some of the above in it by fall along with some yard birds and ducks.
What did you get for Christmas?
8 lbs lg cucumbers (about 12) cut into 1/4 inch slices
8 large onions cut into 1/8 inch slices
4 large green peppers sliced
2/3 cup canning salt
6 cups vinegar
6 cups sugar
2 tsp celery seeds
2 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp ground turmeric
In large container combine cucs, onions, green pappers and salt.
Add cold water to cover veggies.
Chill for 2 hours, drain, rinse
In large kettle combine remaining ingrediants.
Bring to boil and add cucumber mix.
Return to a boil, ladle hot into hot jars Leaving 1/4 in head space.
Adjust lids process for 10 minutes in a boiling water bath.
Yields 10 pints
YUMMMMMMMMMMMM, I can not wait to make these. Hmmmm I think I will call them Yankee Pickles. (Nothing bad about that). That is like what I call Tuna casserole, Its called Chicken surprise. I have this ting about naming things.
Sounds good to me!
I hope your family likes them. Mine does.
They dont last long. I do like to cut them thick though!
This pickle juice is easy, you could use it for all your pickling.
I use it to do hot pepper rings as well. They are great on sandwhiches and cheese and crackers. Enjoy! ;)
Looks really yummy, JM (sc)!
Do you can grow? I know you garden.
Just started. Did okra, green tomatoes, spaghetti sauce, ketchup, pickles, salsa, buncha fruit, pork and pineapple stew, minestrone....I have an Amish friend (experienced!!) to help so it's not as insane as it sounds, but I'm definitely having fun!!
What did you do with the green tomatoes?
Pineapple stew sounds interesting! I sure love pineapple.
I have never done ketchup. I also made a ham glaze as well.
Friends like that are awesome. Having patient people willing to take you under their wing is worth so much! It is fun!
Wow - grow! that's awesome! Do you have a recipe/instructions for ketchup? DH and I were talking about that. We had tons of tomatoes when they finally started turning red and you know little kids, we could have made a lot of ketchup and it still wouldn't have been enough for this household!
Funny! We dont use much ketchup. We are a BBQ and salsa house. hehehe
Actually its pretty funny. My 5 year old daughter has decided that she no longer likes ketchup, but loves mustard. So DH and I laughed about us needing to learn to make both ketchup (for the 3 year old) and mustard (for the 5 year old). hehe
We don't use alot of ketchup here we also are salsa and BBQ folks. I like blue cheese dressing on my chicken. We use sour cream on our fries makes them taste like baked potatoes.
I wonder if its hard to make mustard? hmmmmm
My youngest does like mustard now as well!
Oh ya Cuz! Thats what I'm talkin about! mmmmm!
Not a mustard fan but i do like Balsamic vinegar i cook with that alot it's good on baked chicken.
Its great on salads as well! oh ya!
Cuz hard to believe me and you have the same taste being from different places.
Ya! I know! Must be in our family connection! hehehe
Well! The pickled green tomatoes are done much like the recipe you mentioned. Just for 5 min, though. And we do a lot of rice based oriental cooking so those make a great veggie side dish. Ketchup I can dig up the recipe, but it was really yummy and used a lot of ground cloves. Never tried this, but I guess if you harvest and grind a bunch of mustard seed...
1 can (4 oz.) dry Coleman mustard
1 c. white vinegar
4 eggs
1 c. sugar
Combine mustard and vinegar and let set overnight. Put in double boiler. Add eggs and sugar. Cook until thick.

silkie,
my daughter shares your facination with tinker bell. we spent the better part of the afternoon hunting for a tinker bell umbrella today. HA!
thank u. awesome!! her room is tink and princesses but mostly tink. i'm gonna start a new tink or princess quilt for her soon, haven't decided yet for her b-day in march. i have not seen an umbrella with tink yet but i know they have princess ones. she has a tink coat and hat too, lol. i got those at walmart so may have the umbrellas to match there not sure.
here is a pic of the egg appron with tink and disney faries i made for myself while doing christmas presants for everyone. so when i collect eggs i can put them in the pockets. sometimes i forget cartons and they get smashed in my hoodie pockets, rotfl so this way i see them and remember them, lol.
I love the egg pockets! My jacket has three pockets, so I typically put an egg in each pocket.
it has 6 if i remember right. in my jacket when i shut the door it smashes them between my door and my hip, rotfl so i thought that would work perfect in front of me and even got small pockets for serama and frizzled cochin eggies too!!
I need one of those. Then I wouldnt for get to take them out to put in fridge. No more trips to the store with eggs in pocket! yeah!
You rock Silkie. I saw all your things on BYC. You have been very busy! Your family is Blessed!

Sounds like everyone had a wonderful Christmas! We told the kids about a month ago that money was tight this year and for a gift they could pick out what kind of cookies they wanted! My DS(20): chocolate oatmeal no-bake cookies and my DD(17): raspberry thumbprints. They(my DH, DS and DD) chipped in and bought me a pair of goats!! I'm so blessed! It was a great day-the kids helped make dinner and did the dishes too! Just the time spent together was the best present. :-)
That is a wonderful Christmas story saanansandy.
That is the best Sue. We only buy for the young kids, and we play secret santa. we have so much fun, and there is usually a game in the secret santa that we play till we hours of the night. This year was some version of Uno. We had lots of fun.
That sounds like alot of fun, Tia! The best times I've spent with the kids is playing card games and just plain goofing around. You can have the best conversations with them! And I think it gives the kids a chance to see us as people; not just someone who tells you what chores to do, is your homework done, ect.
I love to go in my teen sons room and just hang out with him. Those are some of the best times playing nintendo or just listening to his music.
A bad case of Amonia...... oh and a new horse blanket...
