Arum italicum info?

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Look at the above, then this, see the white veins, and a deeper green on these?

This one pix will have both types side by side. See if you can differentiate b/w the two? These were planted this fall next to a crinum bed. During the summer, the crinum long wispy leafy growth will shade these out. (At least that was my intention when I planted them).

Very interesting comparison... thank you. I really like the leaf pattern on the 2nd photo. That is the same one I have and like it. Like you, I hope the other plants will provide shade to keep the soil cooler come summertime. These are durable plants, I seperated the roots and popped them in the ground and they never wilt or showed any shock. I am delighted.

And just think, everything else get frost bitten, these are just waving in the breeze. Durable yet beautiful!

That is so amazing. They are an ideal "green" for our winter climate. A topic we were discussing today. Nice to see green in winter.

Yesterday, we have had a frigid temp. in the single digit range. And look what/how the Arums responded. Like Daffodils, these beauty just droop slightly, will swing right back as temp. gradually warm back up.

mine grew the first year then it was not there the next spring lol not happy about that one hahahah oh well will try with a diff one this year

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I wonder if your zone was too cold for them. Although the plant files indicate 5a. A really bad winter might have done them in. Which one are you going to try next?

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

well last winter we got 14 feet or more of snow good protection I think it was the january thaw that did them in it flooded and then froze solid lost a few plants

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

So sorry... I guess that is a gamble to get some of them thru the winter. I hope it is an easier winter for you this year.

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

less snow but much more cold and I didnt plant anything that will not survive zone 3 so im good this year

I rec'd seeds for more of these plants. Some seed starting info on these please? Anyone?

I need to know the right time to start them? We are soon moving into warm when the A. italicum foliage will die back.

How bad would it be to start these seeds only so they can die back?

Should I wait till late summer or early fall?

Should I store the seed in the freezer or frig or keep them in a cool dark place?

Haellpppppppp... lol

Hi Christi,

I sew my seeds last autumn, and they promptly germinated after a couple of weeks. I simply poked a tiny hole ito the soil about an inch deep and tossed the seeds in, cover up and watered them in. As far as storing them, I've noticed that they germinated easily during the early winter months. So keeping them in the crisper bins seems like a thing to do.

A local avid gardener who gave me the seeds last Fall. Apparently he stored them in room temp. and sew them the very same year that he collected his seeds. So, the storing hypothesis is mine, hope others will chime in on their seeds storage experience with us.

Thanks Kim ~ I think I'll need all the help I can get with these. LOL

growing from seed!
is 50per cent diligence
and 50 per patience

mona

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh~oh. I certainly don't have patience...
Please explain the diligence? 8 )

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

its all about doing the right thing for each seed you plant and making the conditions as favorable as possibe for the best chance of success.

I started two flats first and then 13 more the first two are up and now my patience is getting thin waiting for the others lol

some wont be up for two months since they are flozen outside since that is what they need to grow

mona

ps checking sometimes three four five time a day for babies hahahhaha

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Ohhh yes, I am guilty of that. I really lack patience with seed starting.
I realize you are in a colder zone but will the foliage stay thru the summer for you?

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

well the ones inside will not go out till the end of may for july to september blooms the ones outside are cold hardy perennials that need cold to germinate so use flats with dones and put them shades but on the south side of the house so they freeze and thaw for a few weeks and then when it is warm enough they will germinate.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Do you think the seeds I have need cold to germinate?

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

depends what you have dear

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Sorry ~ I don't know. They are just marked Arum italicum. Not sure which cultivar.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Christi, look back on my post on Jan. 3rd above. I sew mine back on Oct. 10th and they sprouted by Jan. So with our Southern clime, I believe a little cold front here and there will help these seed to germinate. Good lucks.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks Kim ~ I am thinking I will pop them in the frig and wait till fall to sow...

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Happy Valentine my friend. Happy A. italicum sowing. :-)
