Cottage Garden Seed Swap & Chat #20

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

SW, thanks for the offer, but I think the packs of baggies from WalMart should do the trick... I may see about ordering some if I can get a case of 1000 cheaper (and maybe they'd be a bit sturdier than the ones WM is stocking this year). I'll have labels ready ahead of time... BlueSpiral, if you'll tickle those ivories while I pack seeds, I'll be thrilled! My living room tends to turn into "seed central" anyway. You know I'd be thrilled for us to get together at any time, seeds or no seeds. :-)

Critter, I'm teasing about the piano. Looks like the inflammation issues are here to stay. When I come over, I will give those seeds my undivided, prioritized attention.

Star,
Sure, I'll ask my brother about the name of the native he brought me, and if he thinks the Helianthus schweinitzii will grow here. I should ask him if there will be a problem with cross pollinating with the other types of sunflowers that live here too.
I had no idea that poison ivy was an introduced plant. I knew about the Russian thistle (aka the tumble weed). That explains a lot. Don't have poison ivy, but we do have poison oak out this way. That stuff can be transferred from a dogs coat to you and anything you touch. Nasty.
Got to feed people who can't feed themselves. Teens!

I've not been able to get on DG since before Christmas and missed an entire thread! I skimmed through it with my morning coffee and would like to pass along warm thoughts to all...from those who had a rough time missing loved ones this season to those with exciting, joyous news as well.

And now I'm off to the co-op forum. I completely forgot about the pepper co-op, I wonder if I'm too late.

critter, I'd love to split a pack of Leopard's Bane! Just a few seeds will be great for me :-)

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Lala.... glad to have you back.... and you are having morning coffee at 3am?

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Wind... I will add a few in your piggy trough. Singing Wolf will add some after ya talk to you brother.

These are a perennial and even if they should get cross pollinated, there will be some flowers that won't and it won't be hard to distinguish between the real and a hyrbidized one.

With this wildflower being so rare, I don't think it pollinates very easily, so not really worried about cross pollination to much. I have some wild helianthus that grow here too, but haven't seen seed pods on them.

Interesting, didn't know posion Ivy was introduced. The one I hide my head from is Kudzu. it runns rampant down here killing and covering everythign in its path and was introduced by my alma mater. Now that embarassing.

hear there more folsk again in the north with out power again. Hope they get that fixed soon. Well so much for our warm spell, startign tonight it back to the cold again and closing things up, bringing in plants and throwing covers back over stuff at night. Wish I could find the tiny almanac I had to kinda see what the forcast for the next couple of months is gonna be.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

star, you can check out the on line farmer's almanac:

http://www.almanac.com/

there are a couple of others available on line too if you google farmers almanac.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Great! Thanks for the link. Figure there lots of farmers who plan there whoel gardens and crops by that almanac alone, and they been doign it for years and ears, so there got to be something to it.

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)
