Does stemware require coaster?

Is one suppose to use a coaster when drinking wine from stemware? An ongoing discussion in our household.

Well, I'm not Emily post but I think that a coaster should be used if it is offered or it's use is requested by the host or hostess regardless of the type of glass (or stem ware) The purpose of a coaster is to protect the surface it is set on from water damage and scratches. So when in doubt.... use the coaster!

I would always use a coaster but my dd says the restaurant she worked for years to get thru school told the crew that stemware does not use coasters. I always have cocktail napkins out just for that purpose. Just a curiousity, on my part.

I suppose different restaurants have different rules. Several of the restaurants we patronize use coasters for all drinks in the bar regardless of the type of glass but never use them in the dining rooms where the tables are covered with linens while the local steak house uses them for all drinks at the tables. Now you have me wondering if there is any actual etiquette to it.

My opinion would be that fine crystal stem ware doesn't go with coasters, but also would only be at a table with a cloth, and wouldn't be prone to condensation or drips. For more casual slurping away from the table, I think the hostess offering a coaster would be perfectly OK and should be accepted, to protect other furniture. And I suppose if it's Miamai and you're putting ice water in the crystal and its sweating, I guess it would call for a coaster.

But for real etiquette somebody probably should google up Emily Post or something.
