Magnolia macrophylla -Want to add to my local Magnolia grove

Navarre, FL(Zone 8b)

I just ordered the Magnolia macrophylla. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/80566/
I think it is a showcase Magnolia tree that will be just glorious in with my local Magnolias growing down by the bayou. I had the poision ivy and dense undergrowth cleared out of here a year ago. I just want to leave it mostly as is. I just love all the Magnolias. Then today, I discovered this other Magnolia tree on Dave's Garden and I knew right where I wanted to plant one. So I hope it does well with its future friends I want to plant it amoung.

See how many of the local magnolias are growing in this area!

The leaves on this magnolia are different than the leaves on the group of magnolias. The flowers are larger on this one too. Even the scent and size is different of the flowers that bloom on the group. I think the http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/80566/ will make a nice addition to this grove.

That is quite a clump in your second picture. Are those Southern Magnolias?
I love the Bigleaf Magnolia, it is a beautiful tree. Bootandall added a picture of the flower to plantfiles recently. I still haven't seen one in flower, i haven't been to Maryland at the right time yet.

I believe the second picture of the clump is 'Sweetbay Magnolias' since the leaves are smaller and the flowers smell like a citus scent. (lemony)

The third picture shows one with larger, thicker, and darker green leaves. The flowers are much larger also. I believe this one to be the 'Southern Magnolia'

I forgot the sweetbay would be evergreen for you - here it could go either way, but they usually keep most of their leaves.

Yes, you're right. All these magnolias here are evergreen. I wonder if the Magnolia macrophylla will be evergreen here. Do you know?

No, they lose their leaves wherever they grow. The leaves are surprisingly thin and subject to wind damage if not growing in a protected spot.

Here's a picture from last year. I can't find the pics on my computer so I copied it from this thread about Magnolia macrophylla in Maryland
