Driving off and leaving things on the car

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

So as not to hijack "lost items"~~and inspired by the purse story~~

I used to have a Mazda 323- 1988, small sedan when car styles were boxy and squared. It had black rubber bumpers that stuck out about 5 inches., front and rear.

Coffee mug.
14 miles from my house to mom's.
Intact.

Hubby was not so lucky when he left his notes for class on top of the bigger sedan and got on the Beltway.
at night..
But most stayed on the shoulder. Good thing it wasn't windy.
Actually--getting out of the car on the shoulder is VERY risky, please don't do it.

We had a kitten travel 2 hours under our truck. She arrived unharmed miraculously....

Former H left his tool box keys laying on the top of the flatbed semi trailer, near the back. They were still there when we arrived home - abt 13 miles.

Another time he had been working on something under the trailer, left a wrench laying on one of the crossmembers, it was still there when we stopped for fuel, abt 6 hours later.

Another time I had muddy shoes so left them on the step of the passenger side of the truck, H was supposed to put them in the bootbox. He forgot, somewhere on I-74 in IL. Never saw them again. Wore my slippers home.

LOL! I was visiting my family in Western New York in the winter one year, went to brother's house, loading up the vehicle, set my cell phone on the back bumper. Drove off, in the snow. About 5 miles down the road said an explitive or two, pulled over, cell phone was still on the bumper! Amazing!

I have keft my purse on top of the car. I sat it on top, got in drove about 4 miles, this car kept honking at me and pointing up. My daughter was only a baby and I had my cousin was with me because she was going to babysit for me. We couldn't figure out why people were honking at us. Well, when we got to my house and I got out went to reach for my purse it wasn't in the car, ah it was on top. i told my cousin now I know why those people were honking at me. The second time I did it, I was driving along then saw something slide down the back window, looked in rear view mirror, saw my purse laying in the road and there was a car coming. OH no don't run over my purse, he missed it, but my cell phone had slide out, yep he crushed it big time.

Two such incidents to report: I didn't stop for either one of them.

When we were first married, 31 years ago, my wife and I went on a shopping spree one day to get the things we missed in our new appartment. We had purchased a box of 36 glasses in 3 assorted sizes: everyday glasses, nothing like crystal. The box cost about $12. I put the box on top of the car, unlocked the car, put the rest of our purchases in the car and left the box on top. As I left the parking lot, the box fell off the car and rolled over 3 or 4 times before it came to rest on the grass. It didn't open. My wife was howling! I laughed and kept going.

I had purchased a box of pastries at Costco. Costco = large box. Same scenatio: box on top, load purchases in the car, forget the pastries and drive off. I watched as the box flew off the car while I drove on the Turnpike's access ramp. I didn't stop. Luckily, there was no wife howling. I was alone.

Take care, all.

Payson, AZ(Zone 7a)

Very funny, so I am not alone by leaving things on the car and driving off. Well, now every time I start to put someting on the car I say NOPE! I know what will happen, so I don't do that anymore. Thanks for all the funny stories and the new thread.

this is an "under the car" story. My then kitten was keeping warm underneath our Jeep Wrangler. Unbeknownst (sp?) to me, I drove 7 mi. to the grocery store. Kitty hung on for dear life and got off the car in the store parking lot. A kind soul found him and took him to the vet who happened to be about a mile from the store. I had been to the vet just the day before and the office lady recognized the kitty.

My kitten was back home in less than 24 hrs from that harrowing experience. Needless to say, never again did he hide under cars. The kind soul turned out to be a neighbor's girlfriend and to this day we are good pals.

My mom had a flicker take a ride in her car once. He was inside the frame. She had to stop and have some nice boys and the car shop help her remove him. Somehow he had gotten inside. He was NOT a happy bird whe he finally popped out and flew away.

My DD left her purse on the back of her work truck. She called me in a panic, like I was going to be able to do something from 3 hours away! LOL She tore her house apart trying to find it. She got back in her car and drove to work, couldn't find it. Drove her back trail and there it was, in the gutter at the side of the road about 2 miles from home. Everything was there but her MP3 player.

Sometime--in my first 5 years of marriage, I drove to the Shopping Center and did my thing.....Then--loading up whatever I had bought--I put my wallet on top of the car, to have free hands, and then.....drove off.
When I got home--I realized my wallet was missing and panicked!
I immediately got back in my car and back-tracked the route I had taken--driving slowly and looking all around. NO luck!
Got back home. My hubby--being the EXTREMELY calm, conservative type, who could always solve any problems with calm and confidence, went out again and drove the same route---and after a while, he returned with my wallet. He had found it close to the curb of the road, next to a storm drain. Talk about relief! OH, how I loved him and relied on him for solving all kinds of problems!!!!! It was like---"I KNOW he can fix this!".....

I don't think I have ever done that again!...I always check before I get in the car.
Strange---how ONE experience affects the rest of one's life!
