Everyone has their favorites out of their collections. What do you consider to be your VERY BEST, MOST COOL broms? This is one of mine...Tillandsia dyeriana

So no one thinks they have any cool plants in their collections?

Coffs Harbour, Australia

Of course we do Goth! I've been away a week or so, but here I am now. I find it hard to find a favourite, but Probably at the moment its Neoregelia 'Jewellery Shop' It's only a baby, but has some nice colour.

That definitely wins a 'cool' prize!

Thanks!
I also like Nidularium fulgens for its pleasing shape, and interesting foliage, also the flushing centre

This one is at the Selby Garden in Sarasota. I don't have room in my garden for these behemoths>

The flowers of this Aechmea make an excellent cut flower>

The state botanical garden in Largo has a collection of brom's that is very extensive>

USF also has a good collection>

I like them best when they are in containers. The can stay in the same pot for decades>

Smaller sizes of containers can be moved around, for variety>

A mixed planting. Other than weeding they take care of themselves>

Those are lovely, Dale. We are kinda trying for plants actually in our collections though.
How about this one?
Aechmea tayoensis. Its pretty neat, doesn;t even look like an Aechmea. Many people don't realize its even a bromeliad, LOL. I was rewarded by the bromeliad gods this winter, it has made an offset.

this is my favorite at the moment. Neoreglia "martin" I just love the variegation.

Hey Goth, your Aechmea is bizarre! It looks like a cordyline!
Hi Bat, I like Martin too. Its from N. carolinae I believe.
Hi Dale, what a bunch of lovely pics. I'd like to stroll in all those gardens too. One there you thought was Aechmea, but is a Portea, although very Aechmea-like! The onlt reason I know, is because I have that one here, and it has flowered for the first time this year. Its a very spikey customer! Great in full sun

This is one of my favourites (I have many) Its Neoregelia 'Hannibal Lector'. I have been keeping it in fairly high light to see how much colour it will get. As you can see, a pup, for me!

Hi Weed Woman, I have the 3-part Lector series (The Governor's Plea, Clarica, and Hannibal) as well some descendants that were made with those plants (like Tunisia). There isn't enough difference between the original 3 to warrent their having different cv names IMO but I love them!

Dartmouth, NS(Zone 6a)

I really like that one weed woman! Now I need to find a source for it. Getting broms in Canada is not an easy task. ;-)

Gainesville, FL

OOps I meant Clarice, not Clarica, LOL

Coffs Harbour, Australia

I had a look on the FBS site http://fcbs.org/pictures.htm at the Neos you mentioned Goth, they are all very similar. I have a N. 'Blushing Tiger' and another I bought from a different vendor, and they look like 2 different plants. If you look up N. 'Gympie Delight', they look similar, and I think I've got one. I'll take a pic and see what you think.
Wow, Batflower. I imagine that your climate is quite cool most of the time. How do you source your Broms?
Sue
This is Aechmea orlandiana 'Ensign'. Another of my favourites.

I have Blushing Tiger too but it never has really "Blushed".
Merry Christmas guys!

Dartmouth, NS(Zone 6a)

There is no real source for broms here. I find the odd one at our local greenhouse and I have some friends in the US that mail me the ones I just must have.

Gainesville, FL

Okay here's one.

1. I come from Columbia
2. I am a member of a relatively small genus...

Is it Racinaea undulifolia?

Gainesville, FL

I'm on the wrong thread with this aren't I? This should be on the guessing game thread. Oops.
Close, WW.

Dartmouth, NS(Zone 6a)

its Racinaea crispa I've been looking for one of those for a long time. great looking plant goth!

Gainesville, FL

Bingo you guys are too good

Coffs Harbour, Australia

I spent ages on the FbS site looking through the genus of Broms I've never looked at before! It was quite interesting, and yes, we are on the wrong thread! LOL

South Venice, FL(Zone 9b)

Nice thread!
gothqueen, your first post, Tillandsia dyeriana, is beautiful! Is the color orange or red? It's hard to tell from the monitor.

Here's my favorite bromeliad- Quesnelia 'Tim Plowman'
And here's the story behind it (this is a two for one special!):
Just before Christmas 07, I did a search here on DG in the Products & Sources, zip code search, looking for nurseries in my area. Lo and behold, Michael's Bromeliads popped up, and wouldn't you know it, it's about a mile and a half from where I work. I was super happy, since one of my gardening friends loves broms and I wanted to get him a new one for his collection. I called and made an appt. and Michael gave me a tour of the greenhouses, what a treat. Very nice fellow.
'Tim Plowman' caught my eye right away, with those variegated leaves that look like they're getting ready for prom night- attacked by the curling iron!
Of course I got one for my friend and one for me, Secret Santa, ya know!

It has produced one pup, but the leaves are not curled like the momma plant. :-(
Has any one else grown this one and had a curly pup? Or maybe it's not getting enough sun? It's under a mango tree and the tree has really filled in over the last year, maybe I should move Tim to a sunnier location? Any input appreciated.

I have a large colony of Tim Plowman. The plants curls more aggressively if it is grown dry.
I also have a variegated Tim Plowman. Its very rare. I have since planted it into the ground and it has also grown a small colony.

Gainesville, FL

Sorry, forgot the photo link...I did a 20 mile run earlier today and I am falling asleep, LOL

wow goth, that is one awesome brom!!!!! another for the wish list ;-)

Coffs Harbour, Australia

Hi Cathy, nice plant! I love the curly leaves too! I have a Bilbergia 'Hallelujah' that has a pup, and where the parent is quite highly coloured and spotted, the pup is green. I am confident that as it gets older it will take on the colours, as may be the case with your Tim.
Goth, do your pups start straight and then curl? I know you said you grow them on the dry side, but is it also an age thing? I love your variegated plant! Have you seen Aechmea 'Samurai'? absolutely stunning!

Gainesville, FL

The variegated form of Tim Plowman doesn't curl nearly as much as the regular form. I've had curly Tim P's and not so curly ones...I guess it is just variable.
Yes, I have had Samurai for about 8 years. I have a large one in the greenhouse with a good sized offset at the moment. I never have more that 2 at a time though. The large plant will bloom, then offset and die, and repeat. I have never gotten a 'clump' of Samurai

I don't know if this is true or not, but I recall reading somewhere that Samurai was created through tissue culture by accident. Has anyone else heard that?

South Venice, FL(Zone 9b)

Thanks for the input goth. Tim is in a raised bed that never gets watered, so I think I may move it to another bed where it will get more bright light. Do you have any pictures of your colonies- I'd love to see them! The variegated Tim Plowman is quite striking.

weedwoman, thanks for the good thoughts on Tim junior! Bilbergia 'Hallelujah' is beautiful, I just Googled it. I have a similar Bilbergia (at least that's what I think it is...), but it's a NOID for now.
