Happy belated birthday, Holly Ann

thought you might like this one - has anyone seen an MG like this that's solid up to the edge where speckles play in the picotee edge?

Oh my! Karen - That is really a fabulous MG cultivar ... whatever it is! Never seen anything like that in photos anywhere. I wonder if that cultivar still exists?

(Zone 7a)

I have no idea if it is still around. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could approach Kyushu U and ask?

I just sent Joseph seeds of what I call I. nil "Ugliosus fantasissimus". I think Emma might have contributed some Henka genes somewhere in its past. It looked like Mai Sugata last year. There's so much going on in the flower that it just looks to be a mess - lots of variation between flowers on one vine. But...if one could grow out and cross over a series of generations to try and stabilize a pattern that took advantage of there being both speckles, striping and solid all within one flower - as it was this past summer...hmm???

Also, remember that MG that Ron that posted - I don't know if he was calling it Sweet Dreams or wishing whoever he was responding to Sweet Dreams, but if my memory is working properly here, the area within the star was relatively solid, but then there were areas outside the star that seemed to have some speckling. Very interesting idea to breed for MGs with solid/speckled patterns. Ron's Sweet Dreams is as incredibly beautiful as mine is incredibly ugly.

I wonder if Ron might consider a grow-out followed by controlled crossing that he would direct?

I have your grey margined JMG going, Karen. I need to get Ugly Boy going too. LOL

(Zone 7a)

Har Har, Joseph - I'd love to see folks experimenting with crosses from that one. I wonder how crossing it with one of those Blue Star nils would do?

If anyone wants some seed of Ugly Boy, feel free to send me a SASBE with return postage, your return address, and a slip of paper that says Ugly Boy so I'll know what's up.
